Our Theme - Lending a helping hand
Welcome!
We dedicate this publication to our women Members who handle the loading of data to our websites. At present, we have seven female webmasters: Leanne Eames, Evelin Halls, Vanessa Macleod, Lisa Nelson, Rilla Oellien, Anita Svensson and Pennie White; and one male webmaster: Julian Bamford.
Sad to say, our male webmaster at our Centre is bald. The seven female webmasters have longhair. Since it is mainly our female longhairs who attend to our websites we sought a title to reflect this fact. The initials from it read LAN that generally stands for Local Area Network.
In the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, longhair means a person or animal with longer hair than usual; a clever person, an aesthete, an intellectual; a devotee of classical (as opposed to popular) music; later it became to mean a hippy, a beatnik.
We discount this latter meaning.
Our lemma for our Longhair Australian News Publication is You shall know by experience, which was written down in the Latin form Experiundo scies by Terence in circa 160 B.C. This quotation is in A New Dictionary of Quotations selected and edited by H. L. Mencken, published in 1991 by Alfred A. Knopf, New York.
This LAN publication is dedicated to persons who will come and help us in the future with information technology.
In their operations, our webmasters gather much information each for himself or herself and need to communicate this information between themselves. At the same time, we guess that the information we gather could be valuable to other persons who are confronted with the day-by-day running of websites.
Many of our websites operate from different servers, hence, there are variations of technique of loading information. Rather than tie one Member to one specialised website, we have in mind to skill all our webmasters for operations on all sites.
As a not-for-profit organisation, our dominant culture has not only been self-government but also internal development by volunteers as modes of preparation of task implementation.
The first office of any administration must be order and our Members are taught the art of orderly and continuous industry. For those who measure duty by dollars spent we point out that our systems have paid back a thousand fold all the effort we put into the propagation of Buddha Dhamma from our websites.
We base our calculations of the savings on our printing and postage costs.
The global spread we offer Members and clients is simple and straight forward.
We believe in the frank acceptance of existing facts about rising publication and postage costs and dealing with them as they are and not on a theory of what they might or ought to be. Our paper printing and postage costs rose to $15,000 per year when we were printing an 80-page version of our flagship publication, Buddha Dhyana Dana Review. We have to meet the new costing demands of our living present supply chains.
The foundation of our publications is to retain copyright for our organisation so we can have the ability to donate information free of charge to those who wish to use it rightfully and legally.
Shohei Ichimura states in his book Buddhist Critical Spirituality (2001, pp. 148-150). In the Buddhist world, the Theravadin and Mahayana traditions have continued to uphold somewhat different ways to link the spiritual and secular domain, but with a growing awareness of the forces of change, leaders in both traditions, whether professional monks or lay devotees, have found it necessary to review old forms of expression and seek new approaches so as to accommodate on-going change with a new set of appropriate meanings and directives. We are able to renew a long overdue critical examination of the existing forms of linkage between the spiritual and the secular, whereby to advance a step toward the reform that is necessary to the future growth of Buddhism and a step toward the unification of the two traditions through the creation of a viable avenue of communication and mutual cooperation.
Moreover, the task has grown today because of the physical presence of the Buddhist tradition expanding globally, moving beyond the geographical confines of the past, and reaching to all parts of the world. In the recent decades, Buddhist tradition has acquired increasing respect as an equal among the other religious traditions of the West. If the Buddhist tradition as a whole, Theravadin and Mahayana, can hope to offer a service to humanity on global terms, it will do so through examination and assessment of this issue of the linkage between spiritual transcendence and secular engagement by introducing new directions and new forms of expression for the period to come.
Our publications stimulate the energy, enterprise and intellect of persons, and quicken human genius. Comparison of IT ideas is educational and this present LAN publication is designed for the common glory of Members training since we plan to put this information on one of our websites for ease of access. It may even become an international asset to others who need to learn.
In addition, we need a record of the new data loaded onto each of our websites week by week and perhaps print site maps of our websites from time to time.
This publication, Longhair Australian News, can be found at www.bsbonline.com.au/longhair/index.html

Subject: Longhair Newsletter: How to Retrieve Entries on ORGANISE
Cc: all
Last week, for reasons unknown, over 1200 book entries were lost from the ORGANISE database which we use to catalogue the John D. Hughes Collection.
On Wednesday 28 November, John Watson, Evelin Halls and Vanessa Macleod retrieved these book entries by using the backup floppy kept in the library.
The following is a guideline to retrieve lost entries in the event that it happens again.
Work on PC8A.
Open the Organise database by double clicking on the OYC icon, a 'Push any key' window will appear. Press Enter, and when a blue screen appears with an asterix, type in 499.
Insert Library backup floppy into A drive. There are two backup floppies, both are located in the bottom draw of the desk PC8A is on.
Go to Exit, then click on Backup/Retrieve.
Push any key...
Click on Retrieve.
Click on A: floppy drive.
At this point, a window will appear asking if you want to replace the information on the C drive with the information on the A drive. Type Y for Yes. This will start the retrieval.
On completion, the catalogue will reappear with all the missing entries.

Our new ACCESS Database was backed up on 17 December 2001 by Pennie and Evelin.
The database is now stored at four locations:
1. on the D: drive on PC1A at D:/Database
(this is where the data is automatically saved when working on the database)
2. on the I: drive on the LAN at I:/cgr/a_backup
(this serves as a backup and has to be done manually via the Windows Explorer)
3. on the red Zip disk stored in the IT store
(to do this backup use the Zip drive connected to PC5A)
4. burnt on a CD-ROM disk stored in the IT store
Please see Pennie or Evelin if you have any questions or if you would like
to be trained how to perform the backup.

On Sunday 25 November 2001 Pennie White downloaded 26 pictures from digital camera 1 to PC5A and reformatted the memory stick ready for new pictures.
Pennie White backed up all digital pictures taken so far from PC5a C:\digiphoto1 and C:\digiphoto2 on to Cd-rom and placed this disk in the I.T store. Total files backed up was 395 files, 3 folders, 99 Mb.
The digital camera 1 was placed back in the store in its box along with the download lead. The batteries were removed from the camera and placed in a plastic bag in the camera box. It is good practice to remove batteries from cameras after use and recharge batteries with no charge.

We have our new CGR Database all set up and running on PC1A.
Now we need to enter data. The success of the database depends on persons entering as much data as possible. We need to have information stored and available in our database.
The database is a valuable tool to help run the Centre and to help many persons.
The entering of data into the CGR database is one of our top priorities.
Please see Lainie or Evelin for training.
All Members are welcome to learn how to use our database.
Also, we need to catch up with the CGR correspondence backlog.
We can improve our CGR performance by 80 per cent if persons help to enter data.

Photo Lan is coming!
We now have 1300 scanned images burned to CD. These images are located in the IT store, with a duplicate copies located in the desk draw next to PC 5A. Each image is numbered in their album and this number is used as the filename on our CDs. If you are using these images in documents or to print, take the number from the back of the image(s) and find the corresponding CD. Please remember to replace all images back in their correct album immediately when finished.
We also have many images downloaded from digital cameras.
Evelin Halls and Pennie White are researhing software for our searchable database of our scanned images. This database will have references relating to these images including date taken, event and/or location, and persons present.

The conversion to HTML is done by a separate utility. It will take an ASCII text file created by OYC (or any ASCII text file) and convert it to HTML. This is a dos program, so it will not run on Windows XP or Windows 2000. I am happy to email the complete utility set. Save the attached UTILITY.EXE on a disk. Then run it. It will display a list of the available utilities. When a utility is installed, documentation for the utility will also be installed. A new offsite installation workspace has been installed at our President's office at his new dwelling at Belgrave. This is the fifth such site. His supplementary workspace is available for use up to 1.00am by one Member at a time. It is anticipated most of our work at this workspace will be done by the President and his resident Presidential Assistant. The addition of our fifth offsite webstation installation workspace improves our fail safe position of our in-house internet loading. We look forward to installing our sixth offsite website installation workspace within 3 months. Each offsite website installation we operate helps minimise traffic noise generated in Brooking Street. There is no need for Members to attend the Centre in the evening to work late. Web loading work at the Centre can cease at 10:00pm or earlier. Well done!
