Dear Friend in The Dhamma,
I am extremely happy to know that 73rd Birth Anniversary of Master Dr. John D. Hughes is going to be celebrated on 9th September 2003. In this connection BDC is going to bring out a publication entitled " Celebration of Buddha Dhamma Work John D. Hughes 1955 to 2003" which will contain the contributions of John D. Hughes, Founder of Buddhist Discussion Centre.
Dr. John D. Hughes is a good friend of mine since long time. I still remember that he has visited my Dhamma Village Aburkhil at Raozan, Chittagong, Bangladesh twice. His visit has strengthened the bond of friendship between Dhamma Village Aburkhil and Buddhist Discussion Centre. In the year 1992, Dr. John D. Hughes has presented to me a piece of Buddha Relic while attending the World Buddhist Conference in Taiwan R.O.C.
I have preserved the relic with due serenity. I also visited Buddhist Discussion Centre while traveling to Australia in connection with the Assembly on World Conference on Religion and Peace (WCRP). Still I remember the calm and quite atmosphere of the place where the Buddhist Discussion Centre is located. Dr. John D. Hughes loves Bangladesh very much. I have observed in him the magnanimous kindness and sympathy for the Buddhists of Bangladesh. He always tries his level best to support Bangladesh in any disaster, calamity. Whenever any appeal from Bangladesh has gone to from any organization, he has always published the appeal in his Buddha Dhyana Dana Review and circulated the appeal throughout the world. His contributions towards the propagation of Buddhism are unparalleled. Dr. John D. Hughes has graced the Chair of Vice Presidentship many times in the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) and is actively associated with World Buddhist University.
Dr. John D. Hughes is a devoted Buddhist in the Buddhist world. His writings are worth mentioning and praiseworthy. I am his admirer and appreciate him for his outstanding works through the Buddhist Discussion Centre.
On behalf of Aburkhil Janakalyan Samiti-Bangladesh, a Regional Centre of the World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY), and on behalf of the Buddhist devotees of Dhamma Village Aburkhil, in commemoration of his 73rd Birth Day we would like to award him formally with a title "DHAMMARATNA" ( which means Jewel of Dhamma) for his remarkable contributions towards the propagation of Buddha's Teachings for the benefits of mankind and humanity. It is our pleasure if he be kind enough to accept our given title.
I wish him every great success in life. I wish him good health and free from all sickness. May the blessings of the Triple Gem be on him and the Buddhist gods protect him in all respects.

Kind Guru, John D. Hughes, I request to be taught, I request to be taught, I request to be taught. Please teach me and grant me blessings so that I may cut the vine of self grasping in my mental continuum, and train in love, compassion and bodhicitta.
May you and Anita have long life, good health and the support of our Members and friends for as long as you wish.
Leanne Eames wrote:
I have been blessed to have been a student of John D. Hughes for many years this life.
In earlier times at the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd, many people with serious life problems such as drug and alcohol dependency, came to the centre. The Teacher would put them to work "chopping wood and carrying water", until their minds were settled enough to learn something. Then the great kindness and patience of the Teacher would become apparent as he spent many consecutive hours and days teaching them in order that they could begin to build a new life based on the principles of Buddha Dhamma practice, learning how to be happier.
Thank you John D. Hughes, for the many things you have taught me over many years, both worldly and non-worldly, but most of all, thank you for teaching me the Dhamma.
A good Buddha Dhamma Teacher is a rare and precious thing to find.
Thank you for teaching me the universal bases of Buddha Dhamma practise, knowledges that I carry with me wherever I go.
Thank you for your forbearance and great effort and determination as you teach many beings.
Thank you for building a Buddha Dhamma centre rich with opportunities for students to make merit and thus learn.
Thank you for being a wish-fulfilling gem.
And thank you for teaching me how to begin to open my heart.
May the Triple Gem bless you always.
With love, Leanne Eames.
The final accolade we would like to read for you was sent by Alex Serrano, a past Student of John D. Hughes.
In Praise of John Hughes, Dhamma Teacher
Composed by Alex Serrano on the occasion of Founder's Day 9 September
2003
If we are comfortable with Life, and reconciled to our passing from Life, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we are unperplexed, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we are worthy of responsibility and praise, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we are sane, and free from irrational fears, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we are patient in difficulty, and persist in doing what is good, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we are tolerant of our limitations, and accept the limitations of others, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we can perceive, and enjoy, that which is truly beautiful in this world, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we love without regret, and rejoice in others' achievements, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we can feed ourselves, and possess the means to feed ourselves again, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we trust in our intellects to grow in knowledge and wisdom through dint of effort, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we recognise vanity or willfulness in any of our own, or others' actions, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we have indefatigable energy, akin to a country stream winding its way to the parent ocean, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we recognise the most precious aspects of our own persons, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we become daily more handsome and pleasant in appearance, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we become more comfortable both in mind and body, with each passing day, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we can communicate clearly and directly, without resorting to convoluted expressions, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we have abandoned perplexed thinking, and employ workable reason, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we see hope where once we saw hopelessness, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we protect our knowledge where once we debased its currency among the ignorant, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we esteem our parents, tolerating their limitations as we recognize our own, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we adapt to change as the colour of the ocean does to that of the sky, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we apply flexible solutions to intractable problems, eschewing dogmatism and embracing opportunity, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we are free from addiction to negative emotional or intellectual states, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we become happier with each passing day of each passing year, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If our determination becomes more and more thoroughgoing and well founded, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we can understand the paths to wealth and happiness, and those which conversely lead to indigence and unhappiness, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we can understand that to be human means to impact in many ways the lives of others, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we understand that actions bring about their natural results as effectively as a wheel mark follows a wheel, it is because our Teacher guides us.
If we understand why nations develop and become powerful, and why they decay and become weak, it is because our Teacher guides us.
We praise the day we first met our Teacher.
We praise the day we can learn from our Teacher.
We praise the day we can practice the Buddha Dhamma.

The Cambodian Buddhist Association of Victoria BON Phcum
Ben.
The Cambodian Buddhist Association of Victoria is holding a traditional festival celebration, Bon Phcum Ben, at their temple on Saturday 27th September 2003.
This is the second biggest festival of the Cambodian year and is a festival of all souls. People come to the temple to commemorate the spirits of their ancestors.
Traditionally and religiously, it is believed that on this day, the death spirits will come, regardless of their sins, to look for their loved ones up to seven temples. Food and gifts will be offered to them through Buddhist monks' chanting. It is a chance for the death spirits to meet their relatives. It is also a good opportunity for children to pay respect to their parents and elders. Perhaps it can be described similarly to the thanksgiving. The Temple address is 150 Clarke Road, Springvale South. The day starts at 9 am and finishes at 1.30 pm.

Chan Academy Sumi-e Program 2003
The theme for this year's Chan Academy Australia Sumi-e program taught by visiting Master Andre Sollier is "The Seven Factors of Enlightenment" (in Pali: bojjhanga pabba).
Master Sollier has prepared seven paintings, one for each class. Master Sollier has given us permission to copy the pictures for display on our websites.
The original paintings have been scanned and can be viewed at www.bdcu.org.au and www.buyresolved.com.au. Each painting is accompanied by a short description.
For details visit our websites at www.bdcu.org.au or www.buyresolved.com.au or for class bookings, purchase of materials or enquiries, please contact Julian Bamford on 0400 267 330.
The dates and titles of the next two classes are:
Class 6: 25 October 2003
"Concentration"
Class 7: 29 November 2003
"Equanimity"
Classes are held in the Chan Hall among rare calligraphy, Chan and Sumi-e masterpieces. All classes run from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm.
The cost of each class is $66.00 including GST. The class fee includes all materials.
Students may purchase painting materials from our Centre.
An opportunity exists for the right person to train under Julian Bamford, as an organiser of these classes. Julian Bamford has eight years' experience in this position.
Tea and Coffee-Making Practice
When Members make tea and coffee at the Centre we consume a lot of merit.
Under the current arrangements this holds true whether Members are making the tea for themselves or to offer to others.
Even when we put 20 cents in the dana jar we are still consuming more merit than we make because the real cost of producing a cup of tea is greater than $1.
In order to protect our merit Members should place at least $1 in the money jar per cup of tea made. This applies even when making tea for Anita or visitors.
We can become more aware of the merit we consume by paying
attention to this plan for conserving our merit.
Chan Academy Australia Christmas Raffle
The new Chan Academy Australia Raffle commenced on 3 August
2003 and will run until 4 November 2003.
The first prize for the raffle will be cosmetics to the value
of $600. The second prize will be cosmetics to the value of $100.
We warmly thank Reneetov Australia, Cosmex and Auroma and their
staff for donating cosmetics towards our raffle.

We require at least five copies of each issue with colour photographs.
The issues can be printed directly from the BDDR websites www.bdcu.org.au and www.bdcublessings.net.au

Chocolate Fundraiser
On Tuesday 16th of September 2003 a chocolate fundraiser was initiated by Leanne Eames. There are 20 bags of mixed chocolate bars for sale. All sales need to be completed by Tuesday 7th of October 2003.
Photocopier
Our photocopier is beyond repair. Rodney Johnson has kindly offered the use of his company photocopier when he moves into Brooking Street.
Free use of the copier would be for Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd purposes rather than private purposes. We would need to supply copy paper ourselves, contribute something to the cost of consumables and arrange times of use suitable for Rodney
The Centre still wishes to source a photocopier on a more permanent basis. Anyone wishing to donate a photocopier please see Frank Carter or call him on 0408 303550.
"Feed a Buddhist" Program
All beings depend on nutrients - fine or course to keep alive.
All students need nutrients to progress. Most students do not have mental power. To have mental power students must offer food and drink.
Our Teacher John D. Hughes has created "Feed a Buddhist" Program for Members to make the causes needed in this area.
A report in The Australian newspaper this week noted new research has found that high doses of fat and sugar in fast and processed foods can be as addictive as nicotine - and even hard drugs.
The researchers found that foods high in fat and sugar can cause significant changes in brain biochemistry similar to those from drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Once hooked, the scientists said, many people found it almost impossible to switch back to a healthy diet, often leading to obesity.
The addictive nature of fatty foods was established by researchers at Rockefellar University New York, who found that regularly eating these products (fast foods) can quickly reconfigure the body's hormones to want more fat. They also found exposure to fatty food could influence children's choices so they would always seek similar food, raising chances of obesity in later life.
We are resource rich and can stay that way. Every change we make brings more resources. That is why we change. We do not make changes to destroy our supply chain. In our supply chain at present are millions of beings.
This is a devamanussanam Temple. It is user pays.
User pays is the Law of the Universe for devas and humans. We
make suitable offerings and requests of the many beings who come
to help us. We make food for the Devas. That is what they pay
us for. The devas pay us by gifts and protection.
Use of The Kitchen God
Anita cannot eat low vibe food. Members can chant all the time they prepare food and the Kitchen God will guide them.
At their homes each Member needs a Kitchen God Altar with a framed photo of the Chief Kitchen God Altar in John & Anita's kitchen. Colour A4 prints will be available to Members for $25.
The effect of this program is that Members will start to eat non-sattvic food and their body alters to become finer. They have less body trouble, less boredom and need less sleep.
Some of the auspicious marks (32 major and 80 minor) appear on their bodies. As more and more appear their bodies become fit for Abhidhamma practice.
This system is used in Chinese Monasteries and includes work in the garden as part of the process.
The order is:
1. Work in the garden to grow the food. (Members and non members)
2. Work in the kitchen assisting. (chant over food)
3. Cook the meal (chanting) (All with the help of the Kitchen
God)
4. Deliver the food (in silence) (Members)
5. Teach Five Reflections on food. (All)
Part 1. Members can "adopt" a part of the garden at
the Centre and/or use gardens at their own homes to grow food.
We have already planted garlic & ginger and have some fruit including lemons, mulberries and limes. We have parsley, mint and chillies growing.
Nature helps.
Camberwell Market Stall
Thank you to the Chief God of Wealth and all other Devas and Devatas and Members who help us with the Camberwell Market Stall.

Customers are welcomed by our Members who are trained in the five styles of our Centre, and 'dress to impress' to generate sales and good PR for our Buddha Dhamma Centre.

organisation chosen for this project.
John D. Hughes is in retreat for one year.
Following advice from Master Ru Sun and John D. Hughes heart specialist Dr. Peter Lazzari on Thursday 18 September 2003, John is to suspend teaching and put his energy into recovery.
If John D. Hughes continues to do as he did in the past he will die.
John D. Hughes is on retreat for one year as from 6.30 pm 18 September 2003 to 6.30 pm 18 September 2004.
There will be no face-to-face teaching.
Any requests should be in writing and given to Mrs. Anita Hughes
Students should not request to be taught by the Teacher. But they should request that he continue having long life and good health, and continue his own practice.
Mrs. Anita M. Hughes requests for the sake of John D. Hughes long life, good health and his own practice, that each Member request in writing that their Teacher John D. Hughes takes the advice given by Master Ru Sun and Dr. Lazzari and John's D. Hughes wife Mrs. Anita M. Hughes.
John D. Hughes and Anita M. Hughes continue to need Member's assistance as attendants.
Attendants should not expect to be taught.
They must be attendants only.
Do not expect to be taught. Do not have the desire to be taught by the Teacher.
The ideal situation is that Mrs. Anita M. Hughes needs a suitable attendant 24 hours per day, just as we have with the persons who stay overnight.
This means, for example, that if John wants to paint, then there is someone to help Mrs. Anita M. Hughes.
John D. Hughes will paint and write a book or two. Mrs. Anita M. Hughes is the social secretary of John D. Hughes and will arrange all his activities and rest periods.
Even if someone very teachable comes to the Temple you guide him or her. Protect the Teacher by letting them know that John D. Hughes is in retreat and will not be able to see them at present.
Talk in a positive manner.
Our senior Members are the new Teachers - they help each other, in guiding visitors and new Members.
John D. Hughes will not be giving any face-to-face teaching. Any instructions he needs to give will be in writing by Mrs. Anita M. Hughes.
Management of the Temple is in the hands of the Abbot, Assistant Abbots (John D. Hughes will not be carrying out his Assistant Abbot's duties while in retreat), Directors, President, Secretary and Treasurer.
The following instructions from Master Ru Sun are for John D. Hughes.
1. John D. Hughes must detach from the form of emptiness.
2. John D. Hughes must heal himself in a very quiet environment.
3. John D. Hughes must watch his speech carefully. He will not disclose too many things that should be confidential, such as person's past and future lives.
4. John D. Hughes must live privately for one year, and concentrate on his own practice. He is not to see anyone apart from Anita. Persons may only enter the Sariputta Room for cleaning, healing, caring or overnight attendant duties. The Sariputta Room must be cleaned when John and Anita are in the bathroom or the garden. If John wishes to teach a student he can write on a piece of paper to be handed to the student. No face-to-face teachings to anyone. If persons have a question that only John D. Hughes or Anita can answer, e.g. about John D. Hughes or Anita's finances, it can be written on a piece of paper and handed to Anita.
These instructions are for John D. Hughes only.
Do not slander your Teacher.
Students should read the past issues of the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review for instructions.
The following confidential instructions from Master Ru Sun are for John D. Hughes students.
Students are requested to chant the Heart Sutra 49 times each day for 49 days. This can be chanted all at once or in-groups, or for example, 2 times per hour, as the student determines appropriate for himself or herself.
Instructions written to John D. Hughes by Dr. Peter Lazzari at the Angliss Hospital prior to John's discharge:
MORE PAINTING
LESS TEACHING PLEASE
from Dr. Peter Lazzari
On Thursday 17 July 2003, medical opinion is that John D. Hughes experienced a vaso-vagal event. This is somewhat like a fainting spell caused by the pooling of blood in the bottom half of the body.
To prevent such a thing occurring all persons must be aware of the following.
1. If John is feeling dizzy, light headed or any thing unusual - LIE HIM DOWN FLAT IMMEDIATELY - NO MATTER WHERE HE IS.
IF IN THE GARDEN - LIFT HIM OUT OF THE WHEELCHAIR AND LIE HIM DOWN ON TO HIS SIDE,
This action ensures blood supply is maintained to the brain.
ANITA TO STAY WITH JOHN,
2ND PERSON TO RING AMBULANCE.
3RD PERSON TO TAKE INSTRUCTIONS FROM ANITA.
2. TELEPHONE for AMBULANCE DIAL 000
3. ENSURE HIS TRACHY SITE IS KEPT CLEAR TO ALLOW GOOD AIR FLOW AND PREVENT NO DIRT ETC GETTING INTO.
4. PROVIDE SUCTION AND OXYGEN
Daily
THREE ADULT PERSONS (INCLUDING ANITA) MUST BE ON THE PREMESIS AT ALL TIMES FOR IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY ACTION.
ANITA WITH JOHN
2ND PERSON AND THIRD PERSON MUST BE WITHIN A 1 MINUTE RESPONSE TIME TO ANITA & JOHN.
CAN USE FRONT DOOR BELL AND WALKIE TALKIES
THIS SYSTEM IS THE SAFEST TO ENSURE QUICK RESPONSE.
We request the devas and devatas to assist with this Immediate
Emergency Action.
Our systems are operating well.
We are a company and must adhere to Occupational Health
and Safety standards by law. As part of meeting this requirement,
an Occupational Health and Safety handbook is being prepared.
It gathers in one place all earlier bulletins.
We will prepare and present OH&S Bulletins and report any Identified Hazards and Injuries at every General Meeting, starting Friday 29 August 2003.
Occupational Health and Safety Bulletins (OH&S Bulletin) provide a communication channel for the flow of information about OH&S matters to all Members of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. and are a record of our OH&S matters.
Members are to create and develop OH&S Bulletins in accordance with relevant Acts, Regulations, Codes of Practice and Guidelines.
We will publish our OH&S Bulletins within the Brooking Street Bugle print version as well as on our BSB Online website. We will issue an annual special edition of the BSB for Occupational Health and Safety that contains our up-to-date OH&S Handbook. We will run an annual OH&S orientation program that each Member will undertake.
Previous OH&S Bulletins are stored in a red folder in the library filing cabinet FCA2.
OH&S is an urgent matter.
