To help pay our monthly American Express Account, Members are required to give an extraordinary donation of $100 or more each as soon as possible.
6.2 The Way of the Garden 2003 - Garden Roster
Sunday 1 June 2003 marks the beginning of the winter season in Australia.
Each season we ought to renew our practice.
At our Centre we practice the "Way of the Garden".
Our Temple Garden requires ongoing maintenance and seasonal care.
- When people come to our Temple they will have confidence when they see our beautiful and well maintained Garden.
- Members learn and practice the "Way of the Garden" and maintain the garden for the Landlord;
- Care and attention of the garden creates causes to visit this beautiful garden in the future;
- All Members should plan to do work outdoors;
- Members should know the way of the Garden and practice this.
Our priority must be to rejuvenate the Garden with regular weeding.
Members are requested to assist in this project by practicing the "Way of the Garden".
Phase 1 of this undertaking is to complete the weeding of our Temple Garden by 15 June 2003.
Members should consult the Garden Task List and add their name to the Garden Roster and specify the area (by number) in which they have worked.
The Chan Academy Heavenly Dhamma Garden Roster was prepared by Garden Manager: Lenore Hamilton & First Assistant: Rodney Johnson on 30 May 2003.

8. John D. Hughes' News
8.1 Medicine Buddha Puja
The following are the instructions for Medicine Buddha Practice carried out by John D. Hughes' students for 49 days following their Teachers admittance to hospital and visit by Master Ru Sun on 13 March 2003.
Members can follow the instructions below and chant the Medicine Buddha mantra daily in their homes or at the Centre to make healing water for John D. Hughes. The students offer their blessed water daily to John in the hospital.
This way the students created the causes for their Teacher John D. Hughes to stay in human birth.
8.2 Medicine Buddha Practice for preparing blessed water
Master Rusun prepared some blessed water for John D. Hughes. Master Rusun has advised that the water be used in the following way to prolong the life of our teacher.
Boil some water and let it cool. Add the cool water to the blessed water prepared by Master Rusan.
Pay homage to the Medicine Buddha three times.
Chant the Medicine Buddha Mantra forty-nine times, or more if you wish.
Give some of the water to John D. Hughes, and offer some of the water to the Devas and Devatas or water plants. Keep some of the water to be used the next day.
This process was repeated for forty-nine days.
The result of this practice will be the safe recovery of our teacher John D. Hughes.
Members may attend the Medicine Buddha Puja at a time allocated each day or they may chant the Medicine Buddha Mantra at the Centre for as long as they wish when they have the time available.
Fresh flowers should be offered on John D. Hughes and Anita's Mandala every day.
Fresh flowers and water, round shaped fruit and other suitable puja offerings should be offered on the main altar everyday.
As the number of Mantras chanted increases, the blessed water becomes more concentrated.
Preparation of blessed water will continue. We need about 60 litres per week.
Homage to the Medicine Buddha

12.2 Visit to New Gippsland Buddhist Discussion Group
Last Tuesday 27 May 2003 three of our Members visited Gippsland Buddhist Discussion Group. A student of John D. Hughes, Mr Bob Fawkner established the Group after visiting our Center earlier this year.
Members who attended were long-standing Member Ms Julie O'Donnell, our President Mr Julian Bamford and our Secretary Ms Pennie White.
On behalf of our Teacher and Centre our Members offered a Buddha image, a Stupa from Thailand, copies of our Flagship Journal the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review, Buddhist Hour radio scripts, brochures, business cards and chanting sheets.
Our President Mr Julian Bamford explained some of the benefits of chanting. He then led chanting of the Vandana for Buddha, Five Precepts and the Triple Gem by our Members. This is the chanting we do at the beginning of our weekly Buddhist Hour broadcasts.
Ms Julie O'Donnell explained about the five precepts and answered questions about them.
The five precepts are:
To abstain from killing.
To abstain from stealing.
To abstain from sexual misconduct.
To abstain from lying.
To abstain from intoxicants that cloud the mind.
She said, "The Buddha taught the cause of suffering can be attributed to not keeping these five precepts. The 227 rules kept by a monk come from these five as a foundation."
Julian Bamford explained how if one of the five precepts is overlooked then all other practices eventually all fall down like dominoes.
Julie said in Buddha Dhamma you want to clarify the mind and drinking clouds the mind - it doesn't work to your benefit.
Julian gave a brief history of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.
In 1978 John Hughes founded the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. as an Australian Company from a concept he had in 1955. The organization is incorporated and has financial Members.
We have five websites.
Our library collection consists of over 10,000 items.
It is an environment for learning Buddha Dhamma.
Ms Julie O'Donnell said, "Years ago John D. Hughes remembered his practice of Buddha Dhamma. He wanted to help Australia have Buddhism."
Master John D. Hughes teaches Buddha Dhamma then students say what they have learned. It is a structured teaching, along Socratic method.
He would sit for hours just to teach one thing until it is understood in finer detail.
For our weekly Tuesday classes, we use a text by Dr Mehm Tin Mon and read a paper on a part of that text.
Once you learn something it ought to be put it into action to consolidate learning.
Julian Bamford said: "Put in more than you take out. Chop wood and carry water every day".
The radio is a teaching. It is uploaded on the Internet. It can be read; many skills are learned from it. It is a reference and a resource for many persons who want to know how to practice.
John D. Hughes is a recognised Teacher.
Mr Faulkner explained how the Gippsland group came to be.
He had visited John D. Hughes over many years, and had in his school years been a student of John D. Hughes while at Ferntree Gully Technical School.
Recently he came to visit John D. Hughes for some guidance and John advised him to start this group. Over the past few months Bob Faulkner has done that.
The Gippsland Buddhist Discussion Group is not a company. They gather fortnightly. They have set up the beginnings of a library and Buddha images.
The evening concluded with a ten minute silent vipassana meditation led by Julie O'Donnell.
We thank Bob and Donna Faulkner for inviting us to the Gippsland Buddhist Discussion Group. May they be well and happy. May their organization and Members prosper.
This is an excerpt from the Buddhist Hour Broadcast No.279 titled 'Five Precepts for Good Living this Season', which can read in full online at www.bdcublessings.net.au., and heard live on air on the Buddhist Hour Hillside FM 88.0 on Sunday 1 June 2003 from 11am to 12midday.

After paying respect to the Buddha in the main hall they sat with Members, Pennie White, Lenore Hamilton and Julian Bamford and listened to the Buddhist Hour Broadcast No. 273.
Our visitors and members then sat in the hall for Buddha Dhamma Chanting.
