Abhidhamma Classes

On 25 June 2002 our Teacher commenced teaching Abhidhamma each week on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm.

The classes are taught by resident practitioners John D. Hughes, Anita Hughes and Members Pennie White and Evelin Halls.

Classes will run for 9 years.

There are 41 000 slokas of Abhidhamma in the Pali Tipitika and this makes it the largest section of the 3 baskets.

In Myanamar the Venerable Bhaddanta Narada Mahathera (Aggamahapandita) was well known as the original Patthana Master.

Sao Htun Hmat Win M.A., A.M., S.R.F., Maha Saddhamma jotikadhaja, Adviser to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Union of Myanamar, studied in 1952 under the Venerable Bhaddanta Narada Mahathera (Aggamahapandita).

Sao Htun Hmat Win and Professor Thein Nyunt commenced translating the Venerable Narada’s writings on Abhidhamma. These were not completed.

The Venerable Narada prophesied that “an able scholar will emerge to accomplish the noble task of presenting Abhidhamma in English to the world.”

The novel and authentic treatise entitled “The Essence of Buddha Abhidhamma” by Dr. Mehm Tin Mon resulted.

Dr. Tin Mon received a Masters and Doctorate Degree in Chemistry and then served his country for several years as a Professor of Chemistry. His approach to Abhidhamma is very scientific as well as artistic.

His courses on Abhidhamma drew large crowds as he had the ability to compare Abhidhamma with science as well as with western philosophy making the subject interesting and stimulating.

He emphasised that the teachings of Lord Buddha in Abhidhamma are very scientific.

Abhidhamma or ultimate science surpasses all other historical, philosophical and religious science.

This treatise is really a new version of the Compendium of Buddhist Philosophy after the design of the well-known book entitled “The Abhidhammattha Sangaha - The Compendium of Buddhist Philosophy” written by U Shwe Zan Aung and published by the London Pali Text society in 1910.

Class 1, in this series copies the ‘Table of Content’ of “The Essence of Buddha Abhidhamma” to allow students to become familiar with the Pali words.

The introduction states: “ What is known as Abhidhamma is not the province nor the sphere of a disciple; it is the province, the sphere of the Buddhas (Omniscient Ones).”

Class 2 on 2 July 2002 put forth arguments to dispel the views 1. that the Abhidhamma was not expounded by the Buddha 2. that it was a later edition and 3. It was non-existent during the time of the Buddha.

Although Abhidhamma has been flourishing in Burma for a long time, very few were interested in Patthana because there were no easy methods available for its understanding. In fact Patthana was almost lost into oblivion.

May all our readers, after having made a proper study of Patthana overcome greed, hate and ignorance to understand what is path to fruition.

Class 3 on 9 July 2002 drew attention to the congregation of over 38,000 Devas and Devattas from the Heaven of the Thirty -Three whom had come to hear these teachings, to the human Members of our Centre.

The paper “Examination of Training Issues at our Centre for the next 9 years was studied and Members were advised to study the 100 classifications of the Dewy Decimal system. The study of this paper was extended into the next Class, No 4 on 16 July 2002. This paper can be accessed Volume 12 No 2 at www.bddronline.net.au

Class 5 on 23 July 2002 studied two papers : “Preparation and review of merit needed by participants for Abhidhamma Teachings at our Centre 2002 to 2011 CE.” and “ Tactics for making persons aware of kammic debt’ both papers are available on Volume 12 No. 2 at www.bddronline.net.au

Class 6 on 30 July 2002 gave a description of the Maha-kusala cittas available in this issue (Volume 12 No. 4). This issue also includes the papers for Class 7 to Class 11.

We will continue to document weekly lessons for the next nine years providing a systematised approach to Abhidhamma.

We invite our readers to contribute to these writings and we will publish their writings on our Buddha Dhyana Dana Review on line newsletter.

Our students are enjoying these classes and maturing under these teachings.

May all beings be well and happy.

Ordination of 400,000 Heavenly Monks

On Sunday 26 October 2002, 400,000 Heavenly Devas were ordained as Monks.

In preparation we printed 2000 sheets, each with 20 images of Monks were printed.

By the authority of the Abbott, John D. Hughes, Chan Academy Australia, 237 sheets picturing 4,740 images, were sealed by applying 22 carat gold paint with the Abbot's Conch Shell seal. Each image represented 10 Monks. This totalled 47,400 Monks.

We will be completing the certification process over the next coming weeks.

Flowers and 44 bags of basmati rice were offered to the heavenly Monks, totalling 1849 kilograms of rice. (36 x 5kg, 3 x 2kg, 4 x 1kg and 1 x 3kg approximately)

Thank you to all the Heavenly Sangha, the Devas and Devatas, who attended and blessed this special event.

Thank you to John D. Hughes and Anita M. Hughes for preparing and carrying out the ordination.

Thank you to Anita Hughes, Julie O'Donnell and Amber Svensson for sewing the two Monks robes.

Thank you to all Members who participated: Julian Bamford, Frank Carter, Evelin Halls, Julie O'Donnell, Rilla Pargeter, Pennie White, Amber Svensson, Max Svensson.

Making the causes for students to learn Abhidhamma

To be literate for the rest of this life and next life is essential.

What causes must we make now to have the conditions for education and learning to arise in future lives (over the next 10 years)?

In our Abhidhamma study we will use vast amounts of merit in education processes.

To be able to generate sufficient merit for the next nine years (your future life) to receive Abhidhamma education you ought to:

  1. Offer A4 paper to the Centre

  2. Pay for ink cartridges

  3. Offer printed material to the Centre

  4. Offer printed material from our websites and photographs to fellow Members

Our computers depreciate and are upgraded every 2 to 3 months. We use one cartridge every 3 weeks (4000 sheets per cartridge) at a commercial rate of approximately $55 per cartridge. Our operators’ time in writing, producing and publishing weekly Abhidhamma lessons is within a 24 hour period. The usual office overhead costs apply (heat, light, gas, and power).

Our Abhidhamma writers have literacy skill levels between 4 and 5 (higher order information processing skills). We assume our present writers in education will be able to make sufficient merit in educational processes to continue to write.

We ought to support our present writers to stay at literacy levels 4 and 5 by:

  1. Creating, maintaining a fine environment for Members to read, write, research and learn within by upgrading our library.

  2. Support the production of fine food for all Members.

  3. Maintain a suitable chi flow in all areas by maintaining cleanliness of the air, not cluttering the areas and providing sufficient flower and water offerings to our two resident Practitioners, Devas and Devatas.

  4. Financing and supporting the means of production of our educational materials. We cannot use other materials for our websites because of copyright and we cannot afford to pay royalties to authors and publishers.

We give access to our educational products on Internet at no charge, except your own equipment and printing expenses. For example, we estimate one of our average colour photographs printed on “coated high-resolution” paper from a Bitmap images costs about $8 to $10. At present we cannot afford to give too many copies of our in-house produced photographs.

It is imperative that students of Abhidhamma print and download key photographs from our website at their own expense and distribute them to others as Dana.

This will provide a sound basis for future access to such photographs for the next nine years. This is one factor needed to working towards continuity of attendance at Abhidhamma classes.

7. Current Research and Development Interests

Our Core Business

All Members must be aware of what our core business is.

The core business of our Temple is to be white ant proof, to increase our fire proof rating and to build the new library, kitchen and dining room area.

The Temple needs to be upgraded and maintained. Upgrades and new buildings must be in accordance with the Australian Standard for buildings. All Members must know what these standards are.

Those Members who will go to the World Fellowship of Buddhists Conference in Malaysia must also know these standards and be able to recite them.

We will print out building plans and store them digitally on our IT systems so that everybody can have an isometric view of our buildings. Isometric means "applied to a method of projection or perspective, in which the plane of projection is equally inclined to the three principal axes of the object, so that all dimensions parallel to these axes are represented in their actual proportions..." (The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, 1973).

Members should develop a broad view of what our core business is.

Our core business is in the loka field. Meditation is not core business.

Every Member should help to raise funds for our core business.

Temples are essential for persons to learn and practice Buddha Dhamma. Buddha Dhamma is taught at Temples and it is the task of Teachers and Students to organise plans to look after the core business and carry them out, to maintain the standards required and be fully aware of those, and to raise funds.

We will keep having a good Return On Investment (ROI). New buildings and upgrades will continue to be well planned and debt-free.

The Temple's core business is every Member's business.

Care of Laser Printers

In order to ensure our laser printers are well looked after please take note of the following:

1. Do not leave items on top of laser printers. Sometimes pieces of paper, books, boxes, and so on are left on top of our printers.

Frank Carter found a paper clip in a laser printer housing.

The A3 printer in the Salon D'or for example had objects left on top of it. An air vent on the top surface of that printer needs to be kept clear.

Be careful not to have small objects near these printers as they can inadvertently fall into the printers.

2. Please do not put the paper we use in our ink jet/bubble jet printer into the laser printer as it will melt and damage the internals of the laser printer.
