Abhidhamma Classes
On 25 June 2002 our teacher commenced teaching Abhidhamma each week on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm.
Classes will run for 9 years.
There are 41 000 slokas of Abhidhamma in the Pali Tipitika and this makes it the largest section of the 3 baskets.
In Myanamar the Venerable Bhaddanta Narada Mahathera (Aggamahapandita) was well known as the original Patthana master.
Sao Htun Hmat Win M.A., A.M., S.R.F., Maha Saddhamma jotikadhaja, Adviser to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Union of Myanamar, studied in 1952 under the Venerable Bhaddanta Narada Mahathera (Aggamahapandita).
Sao Htun Hmat Win and Professor Thein Nyunt commenced translating the Venerable Naradas writings on Abhidhamma. These were not completed.
The Venerable Narada prophesied that an able scholar will emerge to accomplish the noble task of presenting Abhidhamma in English to the world.
The novel and authentic treatise entitled The Essence of Buddha Abhidhamma by Dr. Mehm Tin Mon resulted.
Dr. Tin Mon received a masters and doctorate degree in chemistry and then served his country for several years as a Professor of Chemistry. His approach to Abhidhamma is very scientific as well as artistic.
His courses on Abhidhamma drew large crowds as he had the ability to compare Abhidhamma with science as well as with western philosophy making the subject interesting and stimulating.
He emphasised that the teachings of Lord Buddha in Abhidhamma are very scientific.
Abhidhamma or ultimate science surpasses all other historical, philosophical and religious science.
This treatise is really a new version of the Compendium of Buddhist Philosophy after the design of the well-known book entitled The Abhidhammattha Sangaha - The Compendium of Buddhist Philosophy written by U Shwe Zan Aung and published by the London Pali Text society in 1910.
Class 1, in this series copies the Table of Content of The Essence of Buddha Abhidhamma to allow students to become familiar with the Pali words.
The introduction states: What is known as Abhidhamma is not the province nor the sphere of a disciple; it is the province, the sphere of the Buddhas (Omniscient Ones).
Class 2 on 2 July 2002 put forth arguments to dispel the views 1. that the Abhidhamma was not expounded by the Buddha 2. that it was a later edition and 3. It was non-existent during the time of the Buddha.
Although Abhidhamma has been flourishing in Burma for a long time, very few were interested in Patthana because there were no easy methods available for its understanding. In fact Patthana was almost lost into oblivion.
May all our readers, after having made a proper study of Patthana overcome greed, hate and ignorance to understand what is path to fruition.
Class 3 on 9 July 2002 drew attention to the congregation of over 38,000 Devas and Devattas from the Heaven of the Thirty -Three whom had come to hear these teachings, to the human Members of our Centre.
The paper Examination of Training Issues at our Centre for the next 9 years was studied and Members were advised to study the 100 classifications of the Dewy Decimal system. The study of this paper was extended into the next Class, No 4 on 16 July 2002. This paper can be accessed Volume 12 No 2 at www.bddronline.net.au
Class 5 on 23 July 2002 studied two papers : Preparation and review of merit needed by participants for Abhidhamma Teachings at our Centre 2002 to 2011 CE. and Tactics for making persons aware of kammic debt both papers are available on Volume 12 No. 2 at www.bddronline.net.au
Class 6 on 30 July 2002 gave a description of the Maha-kusala cittas available in this issue (Volume 12 No. 4). This issue also includes the papers for Class 7 to Class 11.
We will continue to document weekly lessons for the next nine years providing a systematised approach to Abhidhamma.
We invite our readers to contribute to these writings and we will publish their writings on our Buddha Dhyana Dana Review on line newsletter.
Our students are enjoying these classes and maturing under these teachings.
May all beings be well and happy.

New Dining Room and kitchen
Construction
work on the New Kitchen and Dining Room was done on Saturday 28
September 2002 by Jason Glasson and on Monday 30 September by Frank
Carter.
Two more stump holes were completed on these days
although rain on Saturday limited the time which could be spent
digging.
There are now nine stump holes completed of a total
of 48 which are required for the building.
Members are
requested to help dig stump holes.
Work can be done at any
time as there are marks put on the ground to indicate where stump
holes are to be dug. Stump holes are to be 300mm square and 700 mm
deep. Stump holes are to be covered by suitable pieces of wood so
that persons cannot accidentally fall into them.
Making the causes for students to learn Abhidhamma
To be literate for the rest of this life and next life is essential.
What causes must we make now to have the conditions for education and learning to arise in future lives (over the next 10 years)?
In our Abhidhamma study we will use vast amounts of merit in education processes.
To be able to generate sufficient merit for the next nine years (your future life) to receive Abhidhamma education you ought to:
Offer A4 paper to the Centre
Pay for ink cartridges
Offer printed material to the Centre
Offer printed material from our websites and photographs to fellow Members
Our computers depreciate and are upgraded every 2 to 3 months. We use one cartridge every 3 weeks (4000 sheets per cartridge) at a commercial rate of approximately $55 per cartridge. Our operators time in writing, producing and publishing weekly Abhidhamma lessons is within a 24 hour period. The usual office overhead costs apply (heat, light, gas, and power).
Our Abhidhamma writers have literacy skill levels between 4 and 5 (higher order information processing skills). We assume our present writers in education will be able to make sufficient merit in educational processes to continue to write.
We ought to support our present writers to stay at literacy levels 4 and 5 by:
Creating, maintaining a fine environment for Members to read, write, research and learn within by upgrading our library.
Support the production of fine food for all Members.
Maintain a suitable chi flow in all areas by maintaining cleanliness of the air, not cluttering the areas and providing sufficient flower and water offerings to our two resident Practitioners, Devas and Devatas.
Financing and supporting the means of production of our educational materials. We cannot use other materials for our websites because of copyright and we cannot afford to pay royalties to authors and publishers.
We give access to our educational products on Internet at no charge, except your own equipment and printing expenses. For example, we estimate one of our average colour photographs printed on coated high-resolution paper from a Bitmap images costs about $8 to $10. At present we cannot afford to give too many copies of our in-house produced photographs.
It is imperative that students of Abhidhamma print and download key photographs from our website at their own expense and distribute them to others as Dana.
This will provide a sound basis for future access to such photographs for the next nine years. This is one factor needed to working towards continuity of attendance at Abhidhamma classes.

Research and Development Interests
Library - John D. Hughes Collection
The John D. Hughes Collection is our multilingual reference library that provides a comprehensive resource for Buddhist study and research.
Our two new librarians, Anita and John D. Hughes have commenced their work as Joint Librarians of the John D. Hughes Collection and over the next nine years they will order, catalogue and write abstracts of all the texts in the John D. Hughes Collection.
To make it easier for them we are cleaning and refurbishing the existing library over the coming weeks.
Offerings are being made to the God of the Library, to Sarasvatti the Goddess of Learning and the Chief Deva of Information Technology over the course.
Some of the tasks being carried by our Members include:
Constructing a refurbished altar for the God of the Library and a refurbished altar is to be provided to Sarasvatti The Goddess of Learning and doing offerings regularly.
Moving our PC3A accounts computer and work station to suite 10A
Cleaning each book, checking for and removing any silverfish
Replacing our Library computer PC5A with a much faster machine.
Transferring some recent entries of our library catalogue to our Internet Library records
The fire rating of the Library is to be upgraded with the fitting of sisalation and plasterboard on the south wall.
If you would like to help with any of these tasks or to assist our Joint Librarians, John and Anita Hughes please telephone our Centre on 9754 3334.
You may read about our Library, and the John D. Hughes Collection and view our library catalogue online at www.bdcu.org.au.

Uninterruptable Power Supply
A new UPS has been installed on PC4.
On 30 July 2002 Frank Carter purchased and delivered a new Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) for PC4 to our Center. The UPS brand is Upsonic. The model is a Power Guardian 500. The cost of the unit was $159.50. The unit was purchased from Upsonic Power Pty Ltd., 9 Nicole Way, Dandenong South.
The
output from this unit is connected to a 4 outlets power board. Please
do not use any of these outlets as the UPS is only configured for
PC4A itself. Any additional usage of the power source will only
defeats the sole purpose of this unit.
The UPS was tested
after a period of 36 hours of charging its battery. The main power
supply to the UPS was switched off. The intention is to find out how
long can the UPS provide power supply to its source before shutting
itself off completely. Results are as follows :-
* When the
main power supply to the UPS is switched off, the voltage supply is
automatically dropped to 175 Volts. This is the minimum voltage level
that the Computer require.
*
From 0 to 10 minutes, the UPS will beep ONCE every 3 seconds.
*
From 10 to 13 minutes, the UPS will beep ONCE every 1 second
*
After that time, 13 minutes, the UPS shuts itself down completely.
Please Note :- The UPS is designed to maintain the power
supply for 15 minutes. But, the UPS shuts itself earlier to prevent
the battery from draining itself totally thus, damaging the whole
UPS.
It is believed that 13 minutes is sufficient to save works done on PC4A where a power blackout occurs.
LAN 2 back on line
Please
be informed that LAN 2 is now back on line. The past 2 power outages
did not cause any major damage to the DNS Server and we were very
lucky indeed! Also found that the mapping process have been changed

Rock from Western Australia
On
28 September Members Rodney Johnson, Jason Glasson, Frank Carter,
Brendan Halls and Peter Boswell moved the Rhyolite Rock recently
arrived from Western Australia to it's position in front of the
Buddha Rupa Image.
Anita Hughes took the pictures of the
operation and the actual picture sent to John Emmott was snapped by
the Deva assisting Anita.
The rock is from Turee Creek
Station, south of Newman in the Pilbera Region of northern Western
Australia. It was collected by and sent to us from John Emmott in
Mandurah, south of Perth.
May all Beings be Well and Happy
Also
helping with the positioning of the rock were Julian Bamford, and Max
Svensson, who protected Anita from the rain, while she photographed.
The task took approximately 30 minutes to complete.
The
photographs will be loaded to the Brooking Street Bugle online
website.
Wall
to wall carpet donated to the Centre was laid in Suite 1 on 21
