5. KEYNOTE OPPORTUNITIES

Members and friends wanted to help our key IT persons

Work on our new Local Area Network (LAN2) is continuing.

The e-mail on LAN2 is now operational.

Archiving our Data

It is important that we archive our data so that it may be preserved for 500 years.

One way that we preserve our data is to store it on CD-ROM.

On 5 May 2002, Brendan Hall has saved 28 folders containing 1374 digital photographs, totalling 367 MB from PC4 to zip disk. Brendan archived this data on CD-ROM offsite.

The hard drive on PC4 now has enough free space to continue operating as our stand alone internet PC.

On the same day, 144 digital photographs totalling 506.6 MB were downloaded from Digital Camera Two by Pennie White. These files were then transferred to CD-ROM. The work was carried out offsite using Pennie’s PC and CD burner.

The three memory cards are now ready for formatting.

Members are needed to help archive our data.

Some of our recent pictures need to be rotated so they are vertical and saved to CD-ROM.

If you would like some help with how to rotate and save to CD-ROM contact Pennie White.

Our Teacher John D. Hughes visited his consultant heart physician Dr. Lazzari for his 6 monthly review on 16 April 2002 and saw his G.P. Dr Campion on 19 April 2002.

John D. Hughes’ health continues to improve with excellent medical measurements. His blood pressure ranges from 120/80 to 110/70. His Blood Glucose- Glycated Haemoglobin is 6.2. His renal and liver function tests are normal. Blood cholesterol level is 3.5 and his weight is now 92kg.

9. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY NEWS

Deva of Transformations Altar

We welcome the Deva of Transformations at our Centre.

A Deva of Transformations Altar was set up in the Suite2A Store on 21 April 2002 by Julian Bamford, Evelin Halls and Pennie White.

The following offerings were made:

flowers
six bottles of blessed water
Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. brochure
John D. Hughes Collection brochure
Version 2 of the document "What we must do to implement a foreign LAN
system into our culture"
Vibhajavadin Training Manual
Brooking Street Bugle Issue 77 (new series)
PC I Network card
1GB hard drive
LAN cables
power cables

A string was tied from the Chief God of Information Technology Altar to the Deva of Transformations Altar to connect these two altars.

We thank the Deva of Transformations for coming to our Centre to help us and request the Deva to continue to do so.

LAN1 email cleanup

Members please include this altar on the altar offerings list and make regular offerings to this Deva.

LAN1 email users that no longer use our Eudora email system were removed from the LAN1 server today by John Watson. This freed a lot of space on the email server and should help to prevent Eudora from crashing.

The names of the persons that were deleted off the system were confirmed by John D. Hughes.

Nine persons and their email boxes were removed.

LAN2 Printers

We will get a new printer to connect to PC7A. We will not network the HP Laserjet III printer in the administration office to PC7A.

Saving Digital Photographs to CD-ROM as Bitmaps

We now download all digital photographs from the Kodak Digital Camera No.2
as Bitmaps.

Each Bitmap requires 3601 kilobytes of space.

All digital photographs are to be saved onto CD-ROMs as Bitmaps, and backed up on a second CD-ROM.

On 4 May we downloaded three Kodak camera cards filled on 4 May with over 100 photographs of Anita's 41st Birth Anniversary Celebration and Bell Puja.

It was only possible to save 4 photographs onto the hard drive of PC4 before its capacity was reached.

Pennie White has taken Digital Camera No.2 and the three full picture cards off-site to download and burn the photographs to CDs. One backup CD. The resources will returned to the Centre on Sunday evening.

Storage, Manipulation and Printing of our Digital Photograph Resources

We have over 1500 photographs on our 8 websites, with each online edition of the Brooking Street Bugle including around 50 photographs.

We are taking an increasing number of photographs each week, which need to be saved to CD's as Bitmap masters. Suitable images are then selected and manipulated for loading to our websites as jpeg files.

We also print selected photographs in high definition Bitmap format on A4 photo quality paper.

The key software and hardware resources used for this are the:

Kodak DC240 Digital Camera
Kodak Picture Easy Software
Irfan View graphics manipulation software
Hewlett Packard Deskjet 840C Colour printer
Iomega Zip Drive
Easy CD Burner and software
HP Scanjet scanner

We currently use our Hewlett Packard Deskjet 840C colour printer (printer B), connected to PC4 to do our colour printing. It is also accessible to PC14 as shared printer. The software is also installed. The software is also loaded on PC5A.

We plan to have two PC's operating for downloading, saving, manipulation and printing of digital photographs. Both will have HP 840C Colour Jet printers, Iomega Zip Drive, Kodak Easy Camera software, Irfanview photo manipulation software as standard.

We also plan to have two web PC for uploading photo's and text to our websites.

LAPAM Task Unit Members: Julian Bamford, Jan Bennett, Frank Carter, Brendan Hall, Lenore Hamilton, Isabella Hobbs, David Igracki, Leila Igracki, Rodney Johnson, Lisa Nelson, Rilla Pargeter

LAPAM Task Unit Responsibilities: To maintain and develop the buildings and gardens of the Centre; to undertake new construction works; to refurbish the Centre buildings; and to look after equipment and supplies.

North East Corner Flower Wall Garden

A new flower garden has been created in the North East corner of the Chan Garden, located North of the two wood stores by John D.Hughes, Julian Bamford and Jan Bennett.

The garden work has re-opened access to the Northern path which meanders between the ferns and North fence to the Stupa. Members can now circumambulate the whole property without obstacles.

To create this garden, timbers and cleared wood offcuts were restocked and weeds removed from along the Northern fenceline. Two timber storage crates were deconstructed and the bases used to form a new wall, approximately 1 metre from the fence and approximately 2.2 metres long.

A potted ginger plant from the Emerald Pavilion was split into two and planted between the wall and boundary fence, along with two potted geraniums and six flowering pot plants. On the South side of the wall two rows of eight flowering plants and a large herringbone fern were planted.

A second timber wall has been constructed using paling offcuts. It runs North South. In the future it may be extended with log offcuts to join the East boundary fence line.

A third garden bed was created using soil from the old humus heap in the South West corner of the Centre. We planted 11 flowering pot plants in two rows and a potted geranium.

The flowers were donated by Frank Carter and cost $23.00. They were purchased at Upwey Garden Centre who provided a discount on the trays of pot plants and gave one flowering pot plant gratis.

Increased Fire Rating for the Tool Storage Trailor

The Tool Storage Trailor is being fitted with metal shelving to increase its fire rating. The shelving refit will also work to improve the order and access to tools and maintenance supplies.

The electric extension cables are to be relocated to a low fire risk storage place.

Cataloguing of the items in the storage trailer will also be carried out. This project is being carried out by Rodney Johnson and Brendan Hall..

A total of 6 hours was spent upgrading the tool trailer and tool storage cabinet on Friday 3 May, 2002.

A total of 8 hours was spent upgrading the tool trailer on Saturday 4 May, 2002.

A total of 6 hours was spent upgrading the tool trailer on Sunday 5 May, 2002.
