7. CURRENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERESTS

Longhair Australia News

Our new publication is called Longhair Australia News. Our Theme for Issue Number 1 is “Lending a helping hand”. The following text has been abstracted from the introduction of our first issue:

Welcome!

We dedicate this publication to our women Members who handle the loading of data to our websites. At present, we have seven female webmasters: Evelin Halls, Lisa Nelson, Rilla Oellien, Vanessa Macleod, Leanne Eames and Pennie White; and one male webmaster: Julian Bamford.

Sad to say, our male webmaster at our Centre is bald. The seven female webmasters have longhair. Since it is mainly our female ‘longhairs’ who attend to our websites we sought a title to reflect this fact. The initials from it read ‘LAN’ that generally stands for Local Area Network.

In the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, ‘longhair’ means a person or animal with longer hair than usual; a clever person, an aesthete, an intellectual; a devotee of classical (as opposed to popular) music; later it became to mean a hippy, a beatnik.

We discount this latter meaning.

This LAN publication is dedicated to persons who will come and help us in the future with information technology.

In their operations, our webmasters gather much information each for himself or herself and need to communicate this information between themselves. At the same time, we guess that the information we gather could be valuable to other persons who are confronted with the day-by-day running of websites.

Many of our websites operate from different servers, hence, there are variations of technique of loading information. Rather than tie one Member to one specialised website, we have in mind to skill all our webmasters for operations on all sites.

As a not-for-profit organisation, our dominant culture has not only been self-government but also internal development by volunteers as modes of preparation of task implementation.

The first office of any administration must be order and our Members are taught the art of orderly and continuous industry. For those who measure duty by dollars spent we point out that our systems have paid back a thousand fold all the effort we put into the propagation of Buddha Dhamma from our websites.

We base our calculations of the savings on our printing and postage costs.

The global spread we offer Members and clients is simple and straight forward.

We believe in the frank acceptance of existing facts about rising publication and postage costs and dealing with them as they are and not on a theory of what they might or ought to be. Our paper printing and postage costs rose to $15,000 per year when we were printing an 80-page version of our flagship publication, Buddha Dhyana Dana Review. We have to meet the new costing demands of our living present supply chains.

The foundation of our publications is to retain copyright for our organisation so we can have the ability to donate information free of charge to those who wish to use it rightfully and legally.

Shohei Ichimura states in his book Buddhist Critical Spirituality (2001, pp. 148-150). In the Buddhist world, the Theravadin and Mahayana traditions have continued to uphold somewhat different ways to link the spiritual and secular domain, but with a growing awareness of the forces of change, leaders in both traditions, whether professional monks or lay devotees, have found it necessary to review old forms of expression and seek new approaches so as to accommodate on-going change with a new set of appropriate meanings and directives. We are able to renew a long overdue critical examination of the existing forms of linkage between the spiritual and the secular, whereby to advance a step toward the reform that is necessary to the future growth of Buddhism and a step toward the unification of the two traditions through the creation of a viable avenue of communication and mutual cooperation.

Moreover, the task has grown today because of the physical presence of the Buddhist tradition expanding globally, moving beyond the geographical confines of the past, and reaching to all parts of the world. In the recent decades, Buddhist tradition has acquired increasing respect as an equal among the other religious traditions of the West. If the Buddhist tradition as a whole, Theravadin and Mahayana, can hope to offer a service to humanity on global terms, it will do so through examination and assessment of this issue of the linkage between spiritual transcendence and secular engagement by introducing new directions and new forms of expression for the period to come.

Our publications stimulate the energy, enterprise and intellect of persons, and quicken human genius. Comparison of IT ideas is educational and this present LAN publication is designed for the common glory of Members’ training since we plan to put this information on one of our websites for ease of access. It may even become an international asset to others who need to learn.

In addition, we need a record of the new data loaded onto each of our websites week by week and perhaps print site maps of our websites from time to time.

This publication, Longhair Australian News, will be loaded onto the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review online website as well as onto bdcu.org.au website.

We like the adventure of seeing thousands of visitors come to our sites.

We encourage each webmaster to send an internal email on our LAN giving information of what data was loaded and when. These emails are then copied and pasted into our Longhair Australian News.

The following Article is an example of an e-mail suitable for the Longhair Australia News publication.

A Longhair Project: Buddhist Hour Broadcast 1 preserved on Compact Disc

On 1 January 2001, a CD-ROM version of our very first Buddhist Hour broadcast was prepared by Pennie White.

The first Buddhist Hour program was broadcast on 22 February 1998 and is titled: “The anthems and fanfares you may be looking for”.

Master John D. Hughes wrote, produced and presented Buddha Dhamma live for this broadcast.

Members Anita Svensson, Julie O'Donnell and Lyn Lehmann chanted the Vandana for Buddha and Triple Gem in Pali, and the Dedication of the Merits and blessings in English.

The variations on the Vandana for Buddha, Buddhist Fanfare composed by Bob Venier, The Australian National Anthem and the World Fellowship of Buddhist theme song were broadcast on this occasion.

Master John D. Hughes also discussed the origin and meanings of the Buddhist chanting and fanfares.

This is the second Buddhist Hour Radio program to be reproduced as a CD-ROM from audio cassette tape. The first one was the 200th program.

Two master copies have been produced, one for Master John D. Hughes and one copy as a back-up is stored at Pennie White's home.

We intend to preserve all the Buddha Dhamma Teachings on audio cassette by reproducing them as CD-ROM's.

Members interested in assisting with this meritorious activity please speak with Pennie White.

Soon we will provide these CD’s for commercial sale to raise funds for our Centre.

We will continue to preserve our Buddha Dhamma Teachings.

Professional Practice

It is our policy of professional practice to use full names of persons and organisations in our publications to benefit from the search facilities we have on our LAN and websites.

In the world there is the quality of virtue
truth and purity and compassion too.
I, according with Truth, shall make
an unsurpassed Truth-asseveration
reflecting on the power of Dhamma
and calling to mind the Conquerors in the past.

Depending on this power of Truth
I made a Truth-asseveration:
‘Here are wings which do not fly,
here are feet which do not walk,
and mother and father have fled away -
‘Jataveda the Fire: Go back!’
This act of mine I made with Truth,
The great blazing crested flames
avoided sixteen lengths of land
like fire that has to water reached.
For Truth my equal there is not.
This is my perfection of Truth.

Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. Fire Protection Manual 2002

Editor Pennie White B.A. Dip Ed.

Compiled by John D. Hughes, Julian Bamford and Pennie White on 24 December 2001

This manual is dedicated to the countless persons who protect other beings from fire in the past and present by prevention, hazard reduction and extinguishing; and to the countless persons who will continue this important practice in the future.

Hazard Reduction for Inflammable Materials

We keep our inflammable liquids in explosion proof drums.

We have masks to be worn in the case of fire to prevent breathing in toxic fumes generated by burning chemicals.

Five copies of the BDC(U) Ltd. Fire Prevention Manual are located in the Library in Wall Unit 7, on the fourth shelf from the top. These Manuals have been catalogued in the JDH Collection.

This file is on the LAN at I:\cgr\fireprev2.rtf

Fire Fighting Drill

All Members of the fire fighting team are requested to attend the Fire Drill that is being held on Saturday 5 January 2002 at 2.00 pm.

Fire Fighting Do List

The Fire Fighting Team will produce a Fire Hazard Reduction Do List every 2 weeks during the summer months.

This list is for all Members to act on during the hire fire risk period. All Members are responsible for the reduction of fire hazards. Your participation in completing tasks on the list is essential to ensure we reduce the risk of fire.

Reduction of Fire Hazards

The North West corner area behind Suite 10 has been cleared of flammable objects.

One wooden storage rack was deconstructed and two wooden crates were relocated to the wood storage area in North East corner of property.

The materials have been sorted into four groups. 1. metals to be kept on site, 2. timber placed on wood heap, 3. resources for off site (at Rodney Johnson’s and Julian Bamford's) and 4. rubbish.

Some of the metals have been stored for easy access in the sheet metal storage crate behind Suite 10. Other metals have been located along the South side of the driveway for future storage.

As part of the fire prevention activities Members also pruned and weeded the garden in this area.

New garden bed at rear of Suite 10

21 rose bushes and about 10 geraniums have been planted in the cleared area behind Suite 10.

An altar was set and offerings of water and flowers were made for the protectors of the new garden area.

The project commenced on Saturday 29 December 2001 at 10.00am and was completed on Sunday 30 December 2001 at 3.00pm. Members worked for 68 hours to complete this project. They were: John D. Hughes, Rilla Oellien, Frank Carter, Rodney Johnson, Julian Bamford, Anita Svensson, Julie O'Donnell, Pam Adkins and Peter Boswell.

Procedure for switching mains power on

Our mains power switchboard is located on the wall above the telephone in Suite 1.

The switchboard has overload switches fitted. If the load on our circuits becomes too high or if there is substantial power surge the mains power switch will turn off and the Centre will be without power.

To turn the power back on use the following procedure.

On the switchboard is one large blue switch on the left hand side and 11 smaller black switches in a row.

First turn all the black switches to the off position (down). Then push the blue switch to the on position (up).

Then push each black switch to the on position (up) one at a time. This means the power load is applied gradually to the mains switch.

Once all switches are in the on position the computer server will also have to be rebooted. The procedure for this is written in the computer log book kept next to PC4.

First Aid Kit Changes

Members please note that medicines are no longer kept in the First Aid Kit as per current occupational health and safety standards.

The first aid kit is for emergencies only and is a temporary measure before attending the hospital or medical practitioner.

No medication will be given out to any persons at the Centre unless they bring their own.
