7. CURRENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERESTS

Fifth Supplementary Offsite Installation Workspace

A new offsite installation workspace has been installed at our President's office at his new dwelling. This is the fifth such site. His supplementary workspace is available for use up to 1:00am by one Member at a time. It is anticipated most of our work at this workspace will be done by the President and his resident Presidential Assistant. The addition of our fifth offsite webstation installation workspace improves our fail safe position of our in-house Internet loading. We look forward to installing our sixth offsite website installation workspace within 3 months. Each offsite website installation we operate helps minimise traffic noise generated in Brooking Street. There is no need for Members to attend the Centre in the evening to work late. Web loading work at the Centre can cease at 10:00pm or earlier.

Bhavana Course - 27 to 31 December 2001

The next Five Day Bhavana Course for 2001 will commence on Thursday 27 December 2001 and conclude on Monday 31 December 2001.

Our Teacher has prepared a paper for the course “Knowing the time and place to establish merit”. This paper was included in Brooking Street Bugle Issue 71, at Appendix 1.

The Bhavana course is a very good opportunity to experience the way the Five Styles are practiced at our Centre and benefit from the insights gained by some of our long-standing Members.

For more information please read our website at http://www.bsbonline.com.au

Interview Transcripts Online

Leanne Eames, Vanessa Mcleod and Rilla Oellien transcribed interviews given by John D. Hughes, Andre Sollier, the Venerable Bhikkuni Kusuma and Vinitha Jayasinghe that were given at the Buddhist Hour radio broadcasts.

The transcripts can be found online at http://www.bdcublessing.net.au/archive.html.

Preserving Buddha Dhamma Teachings

To preserve Buddha Dhamma Teachings we record Teachings by Master John D. Hughes and our Buddhist Hour Radio Broadcasts on audio cassette tapes.

We prefer that 60 minute chrome audio cassette tapes be used for quality reasons.

To prevent “wow” in sound recording we rewind the audio cassette twice before recording.

The Buddhist Hour on CD-ROM

For the first time, we have a “Buddhist Hour” radio broadcast on CD-ROM, the 200th Buddhist Hour program that includes an interview with Buddha Dhamma Teacher John D. Hughes.

Member Pennie White prepared and presented this CD-ROM to our Teacher on 11 December 2001.

Pennie has offered to continue producing CD-ROMs of the Buddhist Hour radio broadcasts. She is happy sharing the knowledge of how to do this with other Members.

We would like to set up the technology required at our Centre. Presently, the CD-ROMs are prepared Pennie’s house, and the covers and copies can be prepared at the Centre.

    9. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY NEWS

Internet and Email setups

Documentation for our Internet and Email setups are updated and stored in i:/ida/uniteisp as well as in the middle drawer of the blue filing cabinet in Suite 2.

PC2A Update

On 11 December 2001, the hard disc on PC2A approached failure. PC2A has a new hard disk of 850Mb, installed by Frank Carter.

The Internet and E-mail setup on the new hard disc were done by Evelin Halls. Because of our greatly improved documentation and storage system the PC was back online quickly because we were able to find all necessary disks and information easily.

PC2A is a stand-alone machine with Internet Access and E-mail setup. The E-mail address on this PC is anitasvensson@bdcu.org.au.

Internet Access Backup

PC4 in the Suite 2 now has Pennie White's Internet account at her home workstation set up as a backup.

It has been verified by phone with Pennie White’s ISP that this setup is legal.

PC11 in the Sariputta Room will have Julian Bamford's Internet account as a backup.

Database backup

Our Database on PC1A was backed up on 17 December 2001 by Pennie and Evelin.

The database is now stored at four locations:

1. on the D: drive on PC1A at D:/Database
(this is where the data is automatically saved when working on the database)

2. on the I: drive on the LAN at I:/cgr/a_backup
(this serves as a backup and has to be done manually via the Windows Explorer)

3. on the red Zip disk stored in the IT store
(to do this backup use the Zip drive connected to PC5A)

4. burnt on a CD-ROM disk stored in the IT store

Please see Pennie or Evelin if you have any questions or if you would like to be trained how to perform the backup.

The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Marsha Thomson MP, has advised us about this amendment.

“I am pleased to inform you that Parliament has passed the Fundraising Appeals (Amendment) Act 2001 which was developed in response to concerns about the previous legislation.

A Ministerial Order will:

The amending Act also puts into place in Victoria, as of 1 January 2002:

Visit by Dr Ranjith Hettiarachi and his Committee Members on 16 December, 2001

Dr Ranjith Hettiarachi visited the Centre on Sunday 16 December accompanied by his wife, Pushpa, and other Committee Members of the Buddhist Foundation (Vic) Australia Inc. The number of guests were fifteen.

Dr Hettiarachi is Chairman of the Buddhist Foundation (Vic.) Australia Inc., which is the Convener of the Australasian Buddhist Convention to be held in Melbourne, Australia, on 21 to 22 June, 2001.

Members provided food for our guests.

Dr Hettiarachi’s speech on the day follows.

In his speech, Dr Hettiarachi greeted John D. Hughes, Resident Teacher of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd., and Members.

Dr. Hettarachi’s first meeting with the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. was on 22 July, 2001, at which planning began for the first Buddhist convention to be held on Australian soil. He thanked John Hughes and Members of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. for their support and guidance, and said that the Centre’s guidance had led the Convention into area which otherwise may have remained unexplored. Some Members have been working on behind-the-scenes jobs for the Convention, while Vanessa Macleod, Jocelyn Hughes and Julian Bamford have joined the Steering Committee for the Convention.

Dr. Hettarachi thanked our Member Leanne Eames for taking a photo of the Samadhi Buddha which was edited by Vijaya Karunasena which has been made into the logo for the Convention and which has gone to all corners of the world, and will appear on all letterhead, flyers, tickets and publicity materials related to the Convention.

He thanked all the Members of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. for their loving-kindness, compassion and generosity of a beautiful lunch and for hosting himself and his family and friends on the day.

With six months to go until the Convention, the Committee will be gearing up in the first few weeks of January, gathering momentum for what is planned to be the first ever Buddhist Convention to take place on Australia, and the world’s best such Convention.

Dr. Hettarachi thanked and praised our Members Vanessa MacLeod and Jocelyn Hughes strongly for their contributions to the program structure for the Convention, a program which includes many world-famous Monks and Nuns and some laypersons from around the globe.

He expressed his hopes for cohesion in the Dhamma during the process of organisation leading up to the Convention, and thereafter. Dr. Hettarachi also expressed a return invitation for the Resident Teacher and Members of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. to visit him. The Buddhist Foundation (Vic.) Australia intends to start a Centre soon, to which all our Members are warmly welcome.

Dr. Hettarachi thanked the Members of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. once more their cordiality, generosity and beautiful food, and hoped that we will all remain friends in the Dhamma.
