4. SANGHA NEWS



World Sangha Council


Venerable Bhikkuni Kusuma visits Australia for the World Sangha Council meeting in Sydney, and comes to Melbourne on 13 November 2001 for a short stay before returning to Sri Lanka.


Venerable Bhikkuni Kusuma, accompanied by Vinitha Jayasinghe is visiting our Temple to meet with John D. Hughes and Anita Svensson on Wednesday 14 November 2001 at 1.30pm.


Katthina Ceremony


A Katthina Ceremony organised by The Melbourne Thai Buddhist Temple Inc. of 498 Elgar Road, Box Hill, Victoria was held on Saturday 27 October 2001 at St Leo International College, 1 Hay Street, Box Hill, Victoria.


Seven Members of the Sangha attended the ceremony, three senior Monks visiting from Thailand, Venerables Phra Thamkhunaporn, Phra Rajpariyattisuthee, Phra Maha Pramot Phettheenung and three resident Australian Monks, the Abbot of The Melbourne Thai Buddhist Temple Inc. Phra Khru Sirithamwithet, Phra Maha Boonsom and Phra Maha Chan, Abbot of Wat Buddharam, Brisbane. The novice Nun who attended was Unruan Niamlim.


Phra Khru Sirithamwithet is the new name given to Phra Somwang by the King of Thailand. This new name recognises many years of service performed by the monk for the community.


Pam Adkins, Isabella Hobbs and Frank Carter represented the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. and were fortunate to participate in the robes offering ceremony to the assembly of Monks.


Thank you to the Sangha Members and the Committee of the Melbourne Thai Buddhist Temple Inc. for organising the ceremony and providing lay persons with the opportunity to make this special merit.

5. KEYNOTE OPPORTUNITIES



The Shurangama Mantra


On Tuesday 6 November 2001, (public holiday) Francisco So will conduct a puja titled "The Shurangama Mantra" for the third time. The first session will commence at 9.30am to 11.30am and the second session will commence at 1.30pm to 4.30pm.


You are welcome to attend. Please bring round flowers, round shaped fruit (sattvic fruit) , round cakes and other suitable sattvic puja offerings. Do not buy onions, garlic or carrots.

6. APPEALS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS



Building a More Solid Base around the Buddha Rupa


We are building a more solid framework around the Buddha Rupa located on the Golden Pavilion. Bullet proof glass will be installed on the Southern end. This opens up the view from the Salon D'or.


Metal brackets and bolts have been purchased. Members will commence construction on 6 November 2001 (Cup Day Public Holiday).


Workshop on how to craft Tiaras


Jewels and gemstones are requested as donations to the Centre.


These are required as we are manufacturing jeweled tiaras as a source of funds.


Six tiaras are under construction at present.


The fifth tiara workshop will be held on Wednesday 7 November at 6pm running for one and a half hours. NEW STUDENTS WELCOME. Please advise Leila Lamers if you can attend. Please get involved in this merit making opportunity.


Students attending this practical workshop will need to bring the following tools:

1 pair of long nose pliers

1 pair of snub nose pliers

side cutters

a strong Stanley knife.


Garage Sale


A Garage Sale will be held on Saturday 24 November 2001 as a fundraising project for the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd..


The Garage Sale will be held at 11 Mahony Street Upwey, Victoria, 3158.


Members are needed to set up, run the sale from 7.00am until 4.00pm and pack up.


Please advise Lenore Hamilton of your availability for the roster.


Members are requested to bring items to sell prior to the 24 November to the above address.


Do not bring clothing or electrical goods.


Database Software Fundraising


We would like to reimburse Frank Carter who purchased a copy of Word 97 so that we have all software needed for our new CGR database available now.


The cost of Word 97 was $200 of which Frank has donated $50.


We need to fundraise $150 and will apply for permission to be obtained to fundraise from the Office of Fair Trading & Business Affairs for a “Guess how many cool mints in the jar? ”


It is a very great opportunity for Members to share in the merit that will be made with the new CGR database.


Thank you Frank Carter for helping to acquire the software needed.

A monograph on a Vajrayogini Thanka


Member, Julie O’Donnell is researching this monograph. Her research assistants are Pennie White B.A. Dip. Ed. and Rilla Oellien.


Use of information and communication technology by the World Buddhist University


Pennie White is preparing the final draft of a research proposal on the use of information and communication technology by the World Buddhist University. This proposal will be submitted to her Master of Education supervisor, Bernard Holkner by 1 December 2001.

10. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY NEWS (OH&S)



Fire Drill


The climate is heating up and the bush fire risk will be high this Summer.


Our next fire drill will be held on Sunday 11 November 2001 at 3.00pm to 5.00pm, see Frank Carter.


Safe Storage of Firewood


Storing large amounts of firewood is a fire hazard.


Frank Carter has arranged a regular supply of good firewood from Demak Timber which can be picked up during summer and stockpiled for next winter.


Members who have a safe space at their house where they can store firewood over summer please advise Frank Carter.

11. CORPORATE GOVERNANCE & REPORTING (CGR)

CGR Manager: Anita Svensson

CGR Task Unit Members: Pam Adkins, Julian Bamford, Frank Carter, Leanne Eames, Evelin Halls, Lenore Hamilton, Lisa Nelson, Rilla Oellien, Lainie Smallwood.


CGR Task Unit Responsibilities: adhere to legal requirements of corporate affairs; accounts; communicate with Federal, State and Local government departments; organise GST payments; supply Australian Tax Office with Business Activity Statements; provide timely managerial information to ensure profits are made; provide quarterly Profit and Loss Activity Statements; arrange for the audit of accounts at a professional level to meet the Statutory requirements of the Gaming Commission of N.S.W.; arrange General meetings and maintain statutory minutes for these meetings; monitor and adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) policy; provide first aid facilities; organise attendants for staffing the Centre; correspondence; schedule events for our Teacher; structure new databases and train persons to maintain them; train personnel to operate CGR functions; refreshment supply; fund and organise Dana for the Sangha visiting the Centre; liaise with neighbours to create goodwill and to liaise with local newspapers to advise of upcoming events.

CGR Database


A new database for the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. Corporate Governance and Reporting task unit has been designed and built using Microsoft Access Software by Members Evelin Halls and Lainie Smallwood.


From 1 November 2001 the database is used to store information on contacts, incoming and outgoing correspondence, approved suppliers and internal and external distribution of our documents.


Lainie Smallwood will be available to train Members, beginning with persons belonging to the Corporate Governance and Reporting task unit, to enter data, perform queries and design reports.

12. INTERNATIONAL DHAMMA ACTIVITIES (IDA)

IDA Task Unit Responsibilities: To maintain WFB liaison; to arrange Dhamma and Prajna Paramita Teachings; chanting, pujas, translations; to maintain and preserve the John D. Hughes Collection; to organise audio and video recordings of teachings and events; to develop and maintain the Centre’s IT systems, data warehouse, LAN and websites; to train Members to become Webmasters; to develop e-commerce; to produce, edit, publish and distribute the BDDR and BSB, to write and broadcast “Buddhist Hour” Hillside radio scripts; to organise and teach Ch’an classes.


Guest Speakers for Buddhist Hour


From time to time we interview guests on our Buddhist Hour Radio program.


Next Sunday 11 November 2001 our guest will be Vinitha Jayasinghe who will be interviewed by our President Mr. Julian Bamford.


Vinitha is coordinating the Venerable Bhikkuni Kusuma's visit to Melbourne. The Venerable Kusuma is in Australia for the World Sangha Council meeting in Sydney, and will travel to Melbourne on 13 November for a short stay before returning to Sri Lanka.


The Bhikkuni and Vinitha will visit our Temple to meet John D. Hughes and Anita Svensson on Wednesday 14 November at 1.30pm.


Vinitha Jayasinghe is on the Steering Committee of the Australasian Buddhist Convention Week for June 2002, and has arranged for the Bhikkuni to be one of the guest speakers at the Conference.

The weekly “Buddhist Hour” radio broadcasts can be heard at 11.00am to 12midday each Sunday on Hillside Radio 87.6FM and 88.0FM in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

13. LOCAL AREA PLANNING & ASSET MANAGEMENT (LAPAM)



Colour Code: Green

LAPAM Manager: Frank Carter

LAPAM Task Unit Members: Julian Bamford, Jan Bennett, Frank Carter, Brendan Hall, Rodney Johnson, Lenore Hamilton, David Igracki, Leila Lamers, Rilla Oellien and Lisa Nelson.


The LAPAM Task Unit Responsibilities: To maintain and develop the buildings and gardens of the Centre; to undertake new construction works; to refurbish the Centre’s buildings; and to look after equipment and supplies.


New Rose Plants


Rose plants that were recently planted in our Heavenly Ch'an Garden have now commenced budding. The garden is flowering well as we are not picking flowers until December 2001.

14. MEMBERS’ NEWS



Anita Svensson has commenced with Springvale Residential Aged Care as the Assistant Manager. Anita works 20 hours per week.


Anita Svensson also received a new wardrobe a gift from Helen Appleyard. Anita thanks Helen and all Members who helped in the process of delivering and organising the wardrobe location.


Amber Svensson received 100% for German, A for Photography and 94% for Maths.


Julian Bamford, President of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. is writing a paper with the working title 'A Buddhist approach to strategic planning in the development of World's Best Practice organisations' and will be completed by December 2001.


Frank Carter representing our Centre recently visited our northern neighbours and gave them a gift of rose plants.


Wendy Clancy, Jocelyn Hughes and Lisa Nelson attended Master Shigyoku, "Young Leaves exhibition of Japanese calligraphy-shoda" on 4 November 2001. There were many calligraphy pieces there by Master Shigyoku and her students.


Rilla Oellien has moved into Frank Carter's house. The kitchen and bathroom have been renovated by Rilla Oellien and Julie O'Donnell.


Lisa Nelson will be getting a job in one week in merchandising.
