Film nights

A motion was passed on Monday 15 October 2001 General Meeting held at 8.30pm that the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. submit to Consumer and Business Affairs Victoria an application to conduct up to 10 film nights over a 12 month period.

Rose Plant Sales

Our total sales of rose plants up to 14 October 2001 is $2506. We estimate that we have sold about half of the quantity of rose plants which we started with. Our sales target for this project is $5000.

Several Members have sold many rose plants in their neighbourhood by going from house to house. The rose plants are so well priced that a majority of the neighbours approached have purchased some. Members are requested to continue selling our rose plants so we can quickly raise another $2500.

We have Rose plants available in three colours, white, pink and white with pink edge, potted into round plastic pots. The project is a major opportunity to raise funds for the Centre from persons outside our own Members.

The sale price per rose plant to the public is $6.00 including GST. If 20 Members sell another 20 rose plants each we will meet our target.

Gift of Rose Plants to other Temples

On 19 September 2001, Frank Carter delivered 108 rose plants to Master Lin as a gift from our Centre to his new Kinglake Temple. Master Lin has a collection of several hundred other plants at his home that are to be transplanted to Kinglake at a later time.

Master Lin expressed his thanks and gratitude for the gift of rose plants.

On Friday 5 October 2001, Members Frank Carter, Rilla Oellien and Lisa Nelson delivered about 100 rose plants as gifts to six Buddhist groups and Temples located in the suburbs of Springvale, Noble Park and Narre Warren.

The Venerable Thich Thien Tam of Hoa Ngiem Temple in 444 Springvale Road, Springvale South, donated 6 large blue ceramic pots to our Centre. These pots are of a traditional Vietnamese design and have been placed in the small garden along the rear wall of the Sariputta room. The pots have been filled with potting mixture and rose plants have been planted in each.

On Saturday 6 October 2001 Frank Carter and Jan Bennett visited seven more Buddhist Temples around Melbourne to offer them rose plants from our Centre.

7. CURRENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERESTS

Review of our Professionalism

We have been working towards S5 management systems for sometime. This means each Member becomes multi skilled and professional in his or her approach.

While it is necessary to be profitable and built assets in accordance with the materialistic models of business, we are becoming more and more aware that we need to change our indicators to prosper and manage an e-business culture.

One indicator we devised about five years ago is broadly classed under the term "professionalism" which means the ratio of Members engaged in critical management decisions that effect the future directions of the organisation.

Five years ago, we had one Member in twenty engaged in critical management decision planning and one webmaster.

Today, we have one Member in two involved in critical management decision planning and eight Web masters. We are planning to have a party to celebrate a critical milestone when we have ten in house Web masters.

Five years ago, we had one Website. In retrospect, we see that it was managed in a non-productive manner because of the delayed response time in adding new material, as the webmaster was off-site.

The advantages of in-house Web Masters have been discovered.

Today, we have 9 well managed websites with quick upload capability (generally within 24 hours). We have more Members in training who can operate our information technology systems and will be able to service our local area networks (LAN).

We have expanded our LAN in part to WAN (Wide Area Network) because we place 70% of our key management information on our various websites. The other 30% is confidential.

We have adjusted writing of our radio broadcasts and publications to be sensitive to the fact that Australia is now indulging in operations of war with our American allies.

We think it prudent to censor some information we receive.

Our Professionalism does not depend on a caste system, nor is it ageist, sexist, or racist.

At the time of Lord Buddha, an absolute monarchical state of ancient India was based on the Brahmanical world view. By definition, they were obliged to protect and promote the social system of the four castes (Varnas). The Sakyan society, on the other hand, was a republican party with a clan-orientated religion, in which their was neither Brahman or Sudra class (the lowest of the (Varna). Yet the Brahmanical world-view, bearing a higher degree of universalism gradually eroded the aforementioned clan-orientated ideology in both religious and social spheres. A rapid process of Brahmanization took place in Sakyan society and destroyed it in India.

The descendants of the Sakyan clan are alive and living in Nepal and hold the Buddha culture in its original form. The principle of endogamy binds a person to one caste, as it does proceeding generations, and likewise binds a single profession associated with that caste.

Our Professionalism does not depend on caste system, nor is it ageist, sexist, or racist.

The middle path is a fundamental truth which has neither an extreme or (fixed) middle.

Some of our older Members were bound by first order thinking and could not act in a professional manner. They left or were told to leave our organisation. Our medium term plan to control and operate a global satellite to ensure we have long term Internet connectivity with the rest of the world at affordable prices has been put on hold for the duration of the operations of war.

We are well content with the recent Review of our Professionalism. May all our new Members be well and happy and exhibit professionalism.

Appointment of a new Financial Controller

Mr P. Boswell CPA, has been appointed our financial controller and is working with our President Mr. Julian Bamford B.A. App. Rec. on a three year financial development plan.

8. JOHN D. HUGHES NEWS

The next level of ESL training for those assisting John D. Hughes to prepare the radio broadcast scripts has commenced. Glossaries have been prepared for each broadcast of the uncommon words we may use. The basis of our present script writing is to impose some censorship because of the operations of war occurring in this country.

For example, we are favourably disposed to the International Islamic Forum for Dialogue.

The International Islamic Forum For Dialogue, based in Jeddha - Saudi Arabia, in cooperation with the World Muslim Congress intends to hold an international symposium for dialogue. High level delegations representing the pontifical council at the Vatican, the World Council of Churches in Geneva and cultural institutions worldwide, as well as an elite of Muslim scholars and thinkers will participate in the symposium which will be held in Cairo - Egypt during the period 28 - 29 October 2001.

The aim of the symposium is to discuss recent developments in the world in the aftermath of the events of September 11 and their dangerous impacts at the regional as well as world levels, so as to find the safest ways and means of combating terrorism, and eradicating its causes, and protecting the world against the disasters of war and the horrid tumult of conflict between cultures and civilizations, so as to lay - down an "International Charter of Values" which would guide the human societies towards peace and safe human coexistence.

And we would be happy to report the outcome of this conference when available.

New CGR Database

The in-house development of a customised database has been given a high priority by our managers.

Our Teacher John D. Hughes dedicates the new CGR Database to Anita Svensson, Evelin Halls and Pennie White.

The new Corporate Governance and Reporting (CGR) Database was designed by Evelin Halls and Lainie Smallwood. The software being used is Microsoft Access 97.

On 17 October 2001, the new CGR Database was successfully installed on PC1A.

Evelin Halls and Lainie Smallwood will commence the testing stage for about a fortnight so please don't enter data as yet.

Thank you to all beings who have helped create the new Database.

In order to construct a stable database, thorough research of what the Centre needs was done followed by the drawing of an ERD (Entity Relationship Diagram) as well as Normalisation of the data. Tables will be linked so that queries can be performed.

Training in how to use the database will be provided by Lainie Smallwood and Evelin Halls.

The software program Microsoft Word 97 is being purchased secondhand by Frank Carter for $210. This program will enable us to mail merge from our database to print mailing labels. We need to raise funds to reimburse Frank Carter for the purchase of this software.

PC1A Upgrade

PC1A has had its D: hard disc upgraded from 420 Mb to 1.2 Gb. Frank Carter arranged for the data to be copied from the old drive to the new one, at no charge, by a technician who works for one of his customers.

The new hard disc has been upgraded to provide additional space to load our new database software. The faulty CD-ROM in PC1A has been replaced with a serviceable 24 speed CD-ROM reader.

10. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY NEWS (OH&S)

1. Correct Storage and use of Electric Cables

Members must not overwind electric cables when storing. When the overwound cable is uncoiled for reuse, the cable forms overlapping loops that do not uncoil. These loops act as auto transformer and deliver an over voltage which can damage or burn out equipment connected to the cable.

2. Correct disconnection of power after electrical equipment use

The pulling out of a live plug can cause an electric spark, that can send a radio frequency wave down the line. These can corrupt computer programs or data.

Ensuring adequate supply of flowers for our Heavenly Dhamma Garden

Members must not cut any flowers from the garden for the next 6 weeks.

Members and friends are requested to bring flowers from their own gardens.

Ten blessings are obtained by offering flowers. We need to ensure a supply of flowers for the future.

We have recently increased the number of flowering plants with the planting of

102 rose plants into 7 rose garden beds.

Julian Bamford, Frank Carter, Lisa Nelson and Julie O'Donnell placed rocks around the edge of the rose garden beds. Soil for the three beds is made up of potting mix and barrow loads of composted soil from around the wood heap area and from under the humus heaps.

Following is the location of the rose garden beds:

Final Inspection of Sariputta Room

On Thursday 18 October 2001 the final Building Inspection notification for the Sariputta Room was received from the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

The Shire advised us that we should supply them with two further documents in order to finalise the approval.

The first is a plumber's certificate which we have asked George to help us with and the second is a letter from John Hughes confirming that he has a smoke detector fitted inside each room of the new building.

Donation of Rocks

On 20 October 2001 Julian Bamford, Lisa Nelson and Frank Carter picked up two trailer loads of rocks which were donated to the Centre by Sue Eagle of The Patch.

Sue Eagle, who is a friend of Julian Bamford's, previously donated the white river rocks which have been used to build the front section of the Reclining Buddha Altar.

On Sunday 21 October 2001 the new rocks were used by Julie O'Donnell, Julian Bamford, Lisa Nelson and Frank Carter to build Ch'an rock borders on the rose beds which were recently planted. Moss was inserted between the rocks.

Rubbish Bin management

Please ensure that rubbish bin lid closes fully when placing the rubbish out for collection by the council. On Tuesday, 2 October 2001 one of the bins was not collected as the lid could not close due to overfilling.

Caravan Window

One of the caravan windows has been broken. The window was removed by Frank Carter who is taking it to have a new glass fitted. The cost of the replacement window is $55.

Rilla is temporarily moving into Frank Carter's house. This move will facilitate Rilla's plans to purchase a house in this area with a view to reducing her travelling time to the Centre.

Isabella is committed to continue attending the Centre for her Dhamma practice. We wish Isabella Hobbs good health, long life and happiness.
