5. KEYNOTE OPPORTUNITIES

Workshop on how to craft Tiaras

We intend to manufacture jeweled Tiaras as a source of funds.

A workshop on how to craft Tiaras is being run by Leila Lamers on Saturday 6 October 2001 from 2.00pm to 3:00pm.

Students attending this practical workshop will need to bring the following tools:

1 pair of long nose pliers

1 pair of snub nose pliers

side cutters

a strong Stanley knife.

Offerings to Chief Kitchen God

We are presently training Members on how to operate in the kitchen according to the Chief Kitchen God.

Members in the Kitchen must do offerings before food and drink preparation and after food and drink preparation.

It is important to have a clean kitchen so we may offer good, nutritious food to our goodly co-mates. The kitchen must be cleaned regularly, the benches wiped several times each day, the floor vacuumed, then mopped and the refrigerator cleaned out daily.

Members contribute a token of twenty cents for each cup of tea, coffee or other beverage which they consume or offer, except for water which is free. The money is deposited into dana jars labelled for this purpose. They are located on the dining table in Suite 3.

Movie Night

The Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. is holding a fundraising film night on Sunday 7 October 2001 at 6:00pm at Balwyn Cinema, 231 Whitehorse Road Balwyn. The movie is America’s Sweethearts.

America’s Sweethearts is a romantic comedy about the American version of royalty - the celebrity couple. On and Off screen couple, Gwen and Eddie, are America’s number one, A-list couple. But after a bitter spilt, the couple still have to go out and promote the movie they made together. Directed by Joe Roth (While You Were Sleeping) and written by Billy Crystal, this film is enormously entertaining with occasional twists.

Please contact Pam Adkins, Lenore Hamilton or Lainie Smallwood to purchase tickets.

A4 Paper

In order to maintain a reliable supply of A4 paper Frank Carter has purchased a bulk supply of 75 reams of A4 Reflex Photocopy paper at $5.33 per ream including GST. Total cost was $399. Storage of the paper is at Frank Carter's house.

Rose Bush Sales

Our Rose Bush Sales fund raising project, with permission from Consumer and Business Affairs Victoria for Members to sell roses to the public, has generated sales of 328 Rose Bushes to Members and friends to date.

A bulk order of 114 rose plants were sold to the local branch of the Horticultural Society, arranged by Frank Carter through our neighbour Marilyn.

We have Rose plants available in three colours, white, pink and white with pink edge, potted into 175mm round plastic pots.

The project is a major opportunity to raise funds for the Centre from persons outside our own Members. Our profit target is $5000 and Members are encouraged to make a sustained effort to maximise your sales.

The sale price per rose to the public is $6.00 including GST. If 20 Members sell 40 roses each we will meet our target.

A special offer is available to Members who will receive four roses for free and may purchase additional roses for $5.00 each including GST.

Moneys raised will help finance our new kitchen and dining room.

Orders for our roses are going well.

Please give your order sheets to Frank as soon as possible so that delivery and payment can be arranged.

Members can obtain Rose Sales Sheets and information forms from either Rilla Oellien, Lisa Nelson or Frank Carter.

Gift of Rose Plants to other Temples

On Friday 5 October 2001, Members Frank Carter, Rilla Oellien and Lisa Nelson delivered about 100 Rose plants as gifts to six Buddhist groups and Temples located in the suburbs of Springvale, Noble Park and Narre Warren.

The Venerable Thich Thien Tam of Hoa Ngiem Temple in 444 Springvale Road, Springvale South, donated 6 large blue ceramic pots to our Centre. These pots are of a traditional Vietnamese design and have been placed in the small garden along the rear wall of the Sariputta room. The pots have been filled with potting mixture and Rose bushes have been planted in each.

On 19 September 2001, Frank Carter delivered 108 rose plants to Master Lin as a gift from our Centre to his new Kinglake Temple. Master Lin has a collection of several hundred other plants at his home that are to be transplanted to Kinglake at a later time.

Master Lin expressed his thanks and gratitude for the gift of roses.

8.Click "Apply" at the bottom left-hand corner of the box.

9. Test your hyperlink

Thank you to Evelin Halls and Leanne Eames for developing these how to instructions for our webmasters.

Writing and Editing of Documents for Internet Use

Please avoid using the tab key as much as possible when writing documents. This is especially important for texts that will be uploaded onto our websites, such as the radio scripts and the Brooking Street Bugle.

For example, reports can be put into tables rather than using the tab key to create columns; the 'Coming Events' can also easily be written in a table; and statistics reports at the end of radio scripts don't need to be in a table or have tabs at all.

The reason for avoiding the tab key is that HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) does not recognise the tabs.

When documents get converted into HTML, all tabs get thrown out, causing the document to become unformatted. Avoiding the tab key will save hours of work for the webmasters so please practise our new 'no tab key' standard.

Rose Beds in the Heavenly Garden

Ten blessings are obtained by offering flowers. We need to ensure a supply of flowers for the future.

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, six rose garden beds were created in our Centre's Heavenly Dhamma Garden with 91 rose bushes planted in the new beds.

Four rose beds were created in the Western Pure Land section of the garden with 55 rose bushes planted, and three rose beds created in the Village Square section with 36 rose bushes planted.

Guided by our Teacher John D. Hughes, the work was carried out on Monday by Anita Svensson, Rilla Oellien, Julian Bamford and Rodney Johnson, and on Tuesday by Anita Svensson, Peter Boswell, Rilla Oellien, and Lisa Nelson.

Soil for the three beds is made up of potting mix and barrow loads of composted soil from around the wood heap area and from under the humus heaps.

Each of the six beds of roses will grow into beautiful rose hedges.

Final Inspection of Sariputta Room

On Thursday 27 September 2001 the Shire Building Inspector did the final Building Inspection of the Sariputta Room.

The building passed the inspection and we will be posted a final approval certificate in the next few days.

This is the official completion of a great and successful building project.

Many devas and humans helped build this beautiful building.

The Sariputta Room is a great blessing to our Teacher, John D. Hughes and Anita Svensson and will be for many years to come.

Rubbish Bins

Please ensure that rubbish bin lid closes fully when placing the rubbish out for collection by the council. On Tuesday, 2 October 2001 one of the bins was not collected as the lid could not close due to overfilling.

Relocation of computer equipment from Suite 10A to Suite 11A

To de-clutter Suite 10A and make room for manufacturing Tiaras and computers, Rodney Johnson and Julian Bamford transported a load of PC terminals, associated computer equipment, a stereo unit and curtains to Suite 11A, which is located at Rodney Johnsons' house in Selby.

The removal of these items has created work space in Suite 10A for five persons to work seated.
