FOUNDER’S DAY VIDEO SPECIAL LAUNCH

Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammasambuddhassa

Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammasambuddhassa

Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammasambuddhassa

Within the world of humans and devas and devatas, our Centre plans to give blessings on Founder’s Day. A senior Monk, Most Venerable Ajarn Viriyananda Mahathero (a patron Monk of our Centre) will be presiding this Founder’s Day. We are very grateful to offer Dana to this Senior Monk.

Founder’s Day is 9 September - our Founder’s birthday. This year a video special is available. Founder’s Day has been celebrated in many different ways over the last 15 years. We had the foresight to tape record and photograph these events over the years.

Pennie White and Evelin Halls have made a video of highlights of these occasions. The video launch is 9 September 2001. Copies can be purchased for $20 including GST. Postage and handling is extra.

Viewing the tape generates blessings to the viewer and others by the recognition of the four types of blessings:

These are:

      1. Always recognise Blessings

      2. Cherish Blessings everywhere

      3. Cultivate Blessings all the time

      4. Constantly sow the seeds of Blessings

These blessings will be taught in detail by John D. Hughes during the September Five Day Bhavana Course.

4. KEYNOTE OPPORTUNITIES

Five Day Bhavana Course

The Five Day Bhavana Course commences Friday 7 September 2001 and runs to Tuesday 11 September 2001. On the Saturday 8 September 2001, visiting Teacher, Master Francisco So will conduct a Puja from 9.30am to 4.00pm.

On Sunday 9 September is Founder’s Day. The teachings will be on the four blessings for improving well being. These are;

1. Always recognize blessings: only recognizing blessings can bring contentment and only contentment can bring happiness.

2. Cherish Blessings everywhere: cherish what one has, feel gratitude and try to repay others kindness.

3. Cultivating blessings all the time: enjoying blessings means they are gradually consumed, while cultivating blessings makes one blissful as they increase.

4. Constantly sow the seeds of blessings: develop one’s potential and encourage all to sow the seeds extensively in the field of blessings so that everyone will harvest blessings.

"The Supreme Virtues and Merits of Surangama Mantra" Puja

On Saturday 8 September 2001, Francisco So will conduct a puja titled "The Supreme Virtues and Merits of Surangama Mantra". The puja will commence at 9.30am for two hours and then again from 1.30pm to 4.00pm. Please bring puja cakes and suitable offerings.

Preparation for Founder’s Day 9 September 2001

A ‘food and other items to bring’ running sheet, cleaning roster and tentative program have been organised for Founder's Day 2001. Could Members please attend the Centre this week and particularly on Friday 7 September and Saturday 8 September 2001 to prepare the Centre for Founder's Day.

Massing of Flowers for Founder’s Day

We request that all Members bring pots of flowers, flowers and blossom from their gardens on Friday night or Saturday. Members are invited to loan their flowering plants for the day. Flowers will be used to make posies. The posies will be prepared by Julie O’Donnell and Lenore Hamilton and will sell for $3.00 each including GST.

Members are invited to help prepare the heavenly garden for Founder's Day. It is suggested each Member buys at least $10 of flowering pot plants which can be placed in the garden during this week.

Members are requested to bring flowers from their own gardens just prior to Founder's Day.

It is important that flowers be massed for Founder’s Day. Many blessings come with the offering of flowers. The ten minor blessings arising for the offering of flowers are described in Buddhist texts.

At our Centre, Members make much merit offering flowers over four seasons to many beings. Flower offerings are made daily on many of the Centre’s altars.

It is suggested each Member buys at least $10 of flowering pot plants to the Centre prior to Founder’s Day to help prepare the heavenly garden.

Members are requested to bring pot plants from their own gardens and place them in the Centre’s garden for Founder’s Day. They can be picked up again the following day.

FOUNDER’S DAY 9 SEPTEMBER 2001

THEME: TESTIMONIAL DINNER & BUDDHIST DISCUSSION CENTRE (UPWEY) LTD. FUNDRAISER FOR TAIWAN VISIT

Members and friends are invited to attend Founder's Day on Sunday 9 September 2001 at the Centre.

A presentation of the history of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd will be held using videos, photographs, slides and documents. The presentation will include a chronological video presentation of John D. Hughes birthday’s have taken place at the Centre since inception. and a display of photographs of other John D. Hughes Birthdays for Members and guests to view. All persons will have the opportunity to see and understand how to build, manage and sustain a Buddhist Centre.

Let goodly co-mates in the righteous life come here in the future and let those that have already come live happily.

The Centre must pay for the air tickets for the two delegates to the Taiwan Conference. Valuable gifts to the host would be expected. John D. Hughes will take paintings as gifts to Taiwan. Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. will pay for these gifts. The sources of funds will be: 1. Auction of John D. Hughes paintings; 2. Direct donations.

We need to use our best resources and project officers to plan the next five years Founder’s Day in detail. Every year, we plan the use it as a fundraiser. In the past, Members have been very slow to seize this opportunity to maximise their merit on Founder’s Day. Over five years, we should plan to raise funds on this occasion. We plan an extra $10 000 per year on this day.

Members and Guests are invited to make donations for the trip to Taiwan of JDH and his wife. We need about $3000 minimum for air tickets and expenses. FUNDRAISING APPEALS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

September Five Day Bhavana Course

A Food Roster has been arranged for the September Five Day Bhavana Course 2001 for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Food Preparation staff and suppliers have been listed. The Food Roster is located on the Do-List Board and on the front notice board in the Reading Room.

A4 Paper Fund-raiser

The A4 paper purchased last year from our A4 Paper Fundraiser is nearly finished.

In order to maintain a reliable supply of A4 paper for the year ahead we need to raise $700. This money will allow us to purchase a minimum of 125 reams of A4 paper. This way of purchasing our paper was very successful for us as we always had paper available and we saved money by purchasing at a discount price. Members are requested to contribute to ensure we achieve this fundraising target.

Rose Bush Sales Fundraiser

Our Rose Sales Fundraiser has commenced with permission from Consumer and Business Affairs Victoria for Members to sell roses to the public. The fundraiser will run for four weeks until the end of September. Our roses are available in six colours and will be potted into 175mm round plastic pots.

This project is a major opportunity for our Centre to raise funds from persons other than our Members. Our fundraising profit target is $5000. We could raise up to $10,000 so it is very worthwhile for all Members to make a sustained effort to maximise your sales. The sale price per rose to the public is $6.00 inc GST. If 20 Members sell 40 roses each we will meet our target. A special offer is available to Members. Every Member will receive four roses for free and purchase additional roses for $5.00 each inc GST. Monies raised will help finance our new kitchen and dining room.

Members can obtain Rose Sales Sheets and information forms from either Rilla Oellien, Lisa Nelson or Frank Carter from Tuesday 28 August onwards.

Fundraising Collection of Beverage Costs

Members are requested to place 20 cents per drink into the fundraising jars provided, there is no charge for Monks or the Teacher.

From 9 July 2001 to 3 September 2001, the fundraising jars brought in a total of $85.55. Milk was purchased for $41.65.

This has been noted by the Treasurer. If you use this money to buy milk, tea, coffee, sugar or bread, please place the receipt in the jar. State on the receipt that the money was from the jar. If you wish to donate milk, tea, coffee, sugar or bread, please place a receipt in the jar with your name on the receipt stating that this is a donation.

Donation of part of House Sale Profit

Rilla Oellien donated $2000 to the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.. She sold her house on 1 September and obtained a good price due to her work on preparing Anita’s house for sale.

7. JOHN D. HUGHES NEWS

Our Teacher continues to gain health after his last operation. Within nine months, at the present rate of healing, he will be very well. We express special thanks for the healing power of the Sangha, the Bodhisattvas, the various Devas and Anita and that help this process.

8. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY NEWS

Writing and Editing of Documents for Internet Use

Please avoid using the tab key as much as possible when writing documents. This is especially important for texts that will be uploaded onto our websites, such as the radio scripts and the Brooking Street Bugle.

For example, reports can be put into tables rather than using the tab key to create columns; the 'Coming Events' can also easily be written in a table; and statistics reports at the end of radio scripts don't need to be in a table or have tabs at all.

The reason for avoiding the tab key is that HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) does not recognise the tabs. When documents get converted into HTML, all tabs get thrown out, causing the document to become unformatted. Avoiding the tab key will save hours of work for the webmasters so please practise our new 'no tab key' standard.

PC13A ISYS Search Engine

PC13A is available for Members who wish to do an ISYS search. All other tasks with the exception of the current CGR converting of files have to be done on other PCs until the current CGR project is finished.

Photolan Server Prototype is being built

After much planning, a prototype construction of the Photolan server will be built by Rodney Johnson. He is donating the case, motherboard, ram and cpu. He will use an earlier prototype of Photolan hard drive and possibly one or more network cards as part of the entire system. Frank Carter is donating a CD-ROM, mouse, keyboard and (possibly) network cards and a monitor.

It is to run 100 times faster than our present LAN.

Once basic functionality is attained, then the system will be installed in the Photolan server cabinet in Suite 2 for further configuration & testing.

9. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY NEWS (OH&S)

Soap for Washing Dishes

Detergents have been giving Members skin rashes. We have banned the use of former detergents to wash dishes in the kitchen. Since 27 August 2001, we have purchased Velvet soap and a soap saver to use to wash dishes.

This soap detergent use is less harsh on the skin that what we used previously. Members are advised to wear gloves when washing the dishes to protect their hands from drying out.

All bottles of detergents have been returned to our cleaning store (at present in the Amenities Block).

Colour Code: Green

LAPAM Manager: Frank Carter

LAPAM Task Unit Members: Julian Bamford, Jan Bennett, Frank Carter, Brendan Hall, Lenore Hamilton, Isabella Hobbs, David Igracki, Leila Lamers, Lisa Nelson and Philip Svensson.

Suite 10 Locks

Locks have been placed on both doors to Suite 10. Both these locks use the same key; there are two keys and these are attached to wooden boards marked Suite 10 in the Suite 2 Store on the new key stick.

Suite 11 Electricity Connection

Suite 11 is now connected up to power and light. The light is to be kept on at all times as a Deva light. The Deva in Suite 11 likes shell offerings.

The power was connected by MRP Electrical who installed the underground power supply. Leila Lamers switched on the light on Sunday 26 August 2001 and offered the contents of the room, the altar and light to the Deva.

Suite 10 and Suite 10A Electricity

MRP Electrical will connect power to Suite 10 and Suite 10A on 4 September 2001. This completes the project of providing lighting and power to these three Suites. The final cost was $1465.20. This was funded by a donation from Rilla Oellien of $1000 and $465.20 from the sale of roses.

Water Tanks

Water Tanks are numbered as follows:

1

Water Tank next to Fragrance Corner (with fire fighting pump)

2

Water Tank near driveway entrance

2A

Water Tank next to Sariputta Room

3

Water Tank next to Suite 4

4

Water Tank behind Suite 10

5

Water Tank next to caravan

Numbers will be printed onto the Water Tanks.

On Sunday 26 August 2001, the new water tank was connected to the Sariputta Room gutter to collect storm water from the roof. Once this tank is full, an overflow pipe directs water into the Australia Pond.

To avoid the Australia Pond overflowing the storm water can also be directed to Tank 1, our largest water tank. If Members notice that the Australia Pond is full, please advise Rodney or Frank who can redirect the water to the other tank.

Fire Wood

Please remember to chop the wood to a size that fits into the fireplace.
