Affirmation of Nine Satellite Centres in the Dandenongs of the BDC(U) Ltd.

On Tuesday evening, 7 August 2001 Members who were in attendance for the Prajna Paramita teaching made the following affirmation: That Members will prepare Anita Svensson's house so that it is in a suitable condition to be sold.

Members also affirmed the number of good causes persons can generate by helping in this project.

After the Prajna Paramita teaching on Tuesday evening, 7 August 2001 Members were invited to help prepare Anita Svensson's house so that it can be sold.

Once the house is sold Anita intends to put the money from the sale towards purchasing a property close to the Centre. A target date for purchasing the new premises is Christmas 2001.

Other persons may also contribute to purchasing the new premises in conjunction with Anita. Anita will dedicate the use of the new property to helping John D. Hughes and the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.

6. FUNDRAISING APPEALS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

A4 Paper Fund-raiser

The A4 paper purchased last year from our A4 Paper Fundraiser is nearly finished.

In order to maintain a reliable supply of A4 paper for the year ahead we need to raise $700. This money will allow us to purchase a minimum of 125 reams of A4 paper.

This way of purchasing our paper was very successful for us as we always had paper available and we saved money by purchasing at a discount price.

Members are requested to contribute to ensure we achieve this fundraising target.

8. CURRENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERESTS

President’s Annual Report, including ‘Return On Investment’ (ROI) from 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001

Prepared by Julian Bamford B.A App. Rec President & Director and John D. Hughes Dip. App. Chem. T.T.T.C GDAIE Founder.

1. Introduction

This year was the best year.

We have continued our globalisation exercises with the introduction of eight websites.

We communicate Buddha Dhamma at an affordable cost to our clients.

Our corporate image has been enforced by placing the Brooking Street Bugle online and having our Buddhist Hour Radio texts available online.

2. Overview of the Centre’s Financial Performance for the Year

2.1 Return On Investment (ROI)

This year the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. had a 25% Return On Investment (ROI).

Our previous years Return On Investment was 48% for 2000 and 44% for 1999.

The Centre’s Assets have increased by 5%.

The total value of the Centre’s assets at the end of the financial year was $433,000. This is a net increase after depreciation of $22,000 for the year.

25% is an excellent return on investment. As our net assets increase it becomes more difficult to achieve such high return on investment.

2.2 The New Accounting System

We were successful in getting into operation the new software needed for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) 2000 on 1 July 2000.

With the introduction of the GST, we see the need for more frequent financial reports because they are a critical tool for our planning. In future, we require these financial reports monthly.

2.3 Financial Reporting

We are planning to appoint a Financial Controller within in the next twelve months.

3. Corporate Governance & Reporting (CGR)

3.4 Internal & External Email

The average Member receives over 1000 emails per year to keep them informed.

Over the period 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001, Members have sent over 72,000 internal emails, based on an average of 6 emails being sent each day to 33 Members over a 12 month period.

We are using email more.

We have sent 50 emails to persons at other organisations over the last year and received 159 emails from different organisations, persons and companies.

3.5 Incoming & Outgoing Correspondence

3.5.1 Incoming Correspondence

From 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2000, 765 outgoing correspondence items were sent.

During the twelve months 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001 the percentage increase of outgoing correspondence was 16%.

3.7 Accident Record

During the period 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001, there has been 18 recorded incidents of injury. One of the injuries required medical attention, however none of the injuries sustained long term effects.

4. International Dhamma Activities

4.1 Our Five Year Time Plan and where we want to go

Within five years we see ourselves as the number one global provider of good information on authentic Buddha Dhamma in Australia. We do not know of any other Australian organisation that is as adamant as we are at pursuing fifty specialised websites within the next five years.

4.2 Our Present Webmasters:

Evelin Halls (Director & Manager of Enterprise Technology)

Julian Bamford, B.A. App.Rec.(Director & President)

1. Buddha Dhyana Dana Review Online registered 1 June 2001 No. B1575280U

4.5 Website Success Indicators

This time last year we had one occluded original website. Now we have revitalised our original website - www.bdcu.org.au.

4.6 Our New Databases

We wish to hold some information for 500 years.

We are re-designing our databases to remove 90% of keystrokes.

We wish to raise the database response time to move quickly with current address changes.

We intend to build a new CGR database that includes a mail-out section that is easy to use from the viewpoint of adding new work in and getting old work out to print ready.

4.7 Our Advertising Reach has Increased and Become Cost Effective.

In our view, the most cost effective advertising globally we have is on Internet.

Our new websites are:

www.companyontheweb.com/buddhamap

www.companyontheweb.com/buddhatext

www.johnhughes.citysearch.com.au

www.skybusiness.com/j.d.hughes

www.bdcublessings.net.au

www.bddronline.net.au

www.buyresolved.com.au

We notice that more and more local people ring us and tell us they discovered us on the Internet.

4.8 Economic Factors Affecting our Direct Fund Raising from Members

Regular Members are a valuable source of funds. Over the last 12 months the economic well being of our Members increased more than the average gross domestic product figure of 4.4%.

The average income increase of our Members was about 18% overall that of the previous year. Income increases meant that Members had more disposable income and were better able to bring food, office paper and small building supplies to our Centre. (See LAPAM Annual Report for details)

4.9 Development of Missionary Skills in Members

Our missionary activities in the future depends primarily on running a non stop Internet crusade.

This will be followed by good public speaking by invitation.

We develop our public speaking on air at the Radio Station.

4.10 The Buddhist Hour Radio Broadcast

We vow to do credit to our religion by decent broadcasting.

Writing well about Buddha Dhamma requires a high set of cognitive skills. We teach such skills.

To announce well requires a set of vocal skills. Our present radio announcers are; Pam Adkins, Leanne Eames, Evelin Halls, Lenore Hamilton, Isabella Hobbs, Jocelyn Hughes, Vanessa Macleod, Lisa Nelson and Pennie White.

Our present script writers are; John D. Hughes Dip.App.Chem.,T.T.T.C., GDAIE, Tim Browning, Leanne Eames B.A M.A, Evelin Halls, Jocelyn Hughes, Vanessa Macleod B.A M.A, Lisa Nelson, Anita Svensson S.R.N. and Pennie White B.A. Hon. Dip. Ed.

The weekly “Buddhist Hour” radio broadcasts can be heard at 11.00am Sundays on Hillside Radio 87.6FM and 88.0FM in Victoria, Australia.

We are different from commercial radio in Australia because we are peaceful and calm.

We get the text of our broadcast program on line before the broadcast.

We thank Brendan and Jeanette Grainger and Hillside Radio for their continuing support.

4.11 Our Radio Script Writer and Announcing Team Building Development Program

John D. Hughes has been the executive producer of the radio broadcasts since inception four years ago.

Two senior students teach Ch'an methods under the guidance of Ch’an Master John D. Hughes, on the last Sunday of each month.

Sumi-e methods are taught at the Centre by Master Andre Sollier. Classes are conducted monthly over the four seasons and each class runs from 10am to 3pm. Master Sollier selects a new theme every year for his students to learn. Master Sollier is assisted by Member Jan Bennett.

4.14 Ch’an Paintings Exhibition Online

An exhibition of 12 Ch’an paintings by Ch’an Master John D. Hughes, entitled ‘Ch’an Images of Australia over the Four Seasons’ are on virtual display as part of the online exhibition at www.buyresolved.com

5. Local Area Planning and Maintenance (LAPAM)

The LAPAM Task Unit reported that LAPAM productivity at our Centre over the period 1 July 2000 to 31 December 2000 had increased to an average of 40 hours of activity per week.

5.1 Overview 2000 - 2001

LAPAM performance lends itself to being analysed in dollars and cents because it deals with the management of physical assets which can be readily assessed and valued. Comparisons can easily be made to previous time periods and improvement can be stated based on empirical data.

Further analysis can be applied where statistics on task unit work hours over the period can be examined. Statistics from the first nine months of the financial year were available for use in this report.

I wish to thank all Members for their valuable help this year and particularly for their contribution to World Fellowship of Buddhists Conference this year in Bangkok, Thailand.

Further Notes to the Report

20 July 1989

Peppercorn rent was paid by the BDC(U) Ltd. to John Hughes at the rate of one peppercorn per annum. A peppercorn was paid for each of the first 10 years since the organisation was incorporated.

Subsequently the rate of payment has increased to one peppercorn per six months, then one peppercorn per quarter. This rental continues to be paid as it falls due.

Electricity Connection to Suite 10, Suite 10A and Suite 11

The electricity connection will increase the usefulness and accessibility of these buildings substantially.

The price quoted was $1490 inc. GST. We have accepted this quote and will pay for the connection with $1000 donated by Rilla Oellien and $500 from initial sales of rose bushes. The quote was based on Members digging all the trenches for the cable.

Electrical Wiring

The electrician completed the connection of electrical cable to Suite 11, 10 and 10A on Tuesday 7 August 2001. Power will not be put into this circuit until all the internal wiring for each of the three suites has been finished.

The second of the two trenches in which electrical cable was placed for Suites 10, 10A and 11 was filled in on 11 August 2001. Leila Lamers and Rodney Johnson completed the internal wiring in Suite 11 on Sunday 12 August 2001.

On Monday 30 July 2001 MRP Electrical laid the electrical cable in the 450mm deep trench from the main building to Suite 11. placed along the trench at a depth of about 150mm. Peter Boswell, Lisa Nelson and Frank Carter filled in the trench to complete this section of the work.

The only work remaining before the power can be turned on in these buildings is completion of the internal wiring in Suite 10 and 10A. Leila Lamers worked on Suite 10 on 13, 18 and 19 August 2001.

In order that persons will never dig into the 240V cable, a 100mm wide plastic warning tape was

Sariputta Room

The water tank for the Sariputta Room was installed by Rodney Johnson on 11 August 2001.

Piping connections to the Sariputta Room need to be fitted and there is a small amount of internal repair work required on the tank before water can be placed in it. The tank will overflow into the Australia Pond.

We will arrange for the final inspection certificate from the Shire Building Inspector.

Fire Wood

Please remember to chop the wood to fit into the fireplace.
