3. SANGHA NEWS

Venerable Ajarn Dhammadaro (Lim Mony) visit to our Centre

Venerable Ajarn Dhammadaro and Venerable Samit-Ly visited our Centre on Friday 27 July 2001 for evening meditation. Our Teacher, John D. Hughes and Members, Anita Svensson, Jocelyn Hughes, Vanessa Macleod, Frank Carter, Phillip Svensson, Pam Adkins, Max Svensson, Joel Svensson, Lenore Hamilton, Rodney Johnson and Lisa Nelson were blessed with a Dhamma Teaching and to meditate with the two Venerables in our Hall of Assembly for one hour.

Max Svensson's, aged 9, request to Venerable Ajarn Dhammadaro to be his preceptor when he becomes a Monk at the age of 18 was accepted.

We thank Jocelyn Hughes and Vanessa Macleod for driving the Venerables to our Centre and we thank Frank Carter for driving the Venerables back to their Temple.

Photographs of the Monks, Monk to be and laypersons present were printed on A4 paper and given to the Monk. These are on our website.

In the near future, we intend to request to Venerable Dhammadaro to become a patron of our Centre.

Thank you Venerable Dhammadaro (Lim Mony) for the many blessings you bring to our Centre.

Members visit Venerable Ajarn Dhammadaro in NSW

On Sunday 22 July, Julian Bamford, Vincenzo Cavuoto and Jan Bennett drove to Sydney and stayed at the Cambodian Temple Wat Dhamma Sameaky, 1 Stuart Street, Canley Vale (near Cabramatta, Sydney NSW). The Venerable Sangha at this Temple are Venerable Ajarn Dhammadaro and Venerable Somsothon.

When Julian Bamford and Jan Bennett took robes in January 2000 Venerable Ajarn Dhammadaro was their preceptor.

The Members gave Dhamma Dana to Venerable Ajarn Dhammadaro in the form of a carved wooden Cambodian Arahant image as a gift from our Teacher, John D. Hughes. Three copies of the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review and Brooking Street Bugle Issue 62 were also presented to the Venerable.

On Monday 23 July Venerable Ajarn Dhammadaro travelled with the three Members back to Melbourne, to stay for a few days at Wat Dhammaram at 53 Balmoral Street, Springvale, Victoria.

During the drive back to Melbourne, the Venerable gave Dhamma talks to the Members during two rest breaks. We thank the Venerable for his kindness in Teaching us the Dhamma.

We thank our Teacher for providing this meritorious opportunity to practise Dhamma Dana.

Photographs of the visit are published online in this issue of the Brooking Street Bugle.

5. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY NEWS

MLBD Newsletter, a monthly of Indological Bibliography, Available Online

We recently received the MLBD newsletter Volume XXIII No. 5, May 2001, of Indological Bibliography produced by Motilal Banarsidass of Delhi, India. Our Teacher has been delighted to read the MLBD newsletter of Indological Bibliography.

This journal is available on their website at: www.mlbd.com

We printed a section of their latest issue Vol. XXIII No. 7 July 2001 from their website this week.

This splendid organisation has been operating for 98 years and was founded in 1903.

They have preserved quality scholastic writing without compromise through these changing times.

Their newsletters fill the gaps in titles for our Buddhist Library. This grand book seller can provide the missing titles.

Interested readers can experience the delight of reading critical reviews of great works by visiting the site at: www.mlbd.com

You can purchase Buddha Dhamma books from the MLBD website. To preserve our Buddhist library for 500 years, you may assist us by donating Buddha Dhamma books to our Library.

Instructions for printing MLBD Newsletter at our Centre

MLBD is an Indian bookseller of Indian religious books.

The newsletter may come by e-mail or need to be downloaded from www.mlbd.com.

Either way the file will come as a ZIP file from which a PDF will need to be extracted.

This PDF contains unusual fonts and will not be able to be printed from the Wang Laser printer connected to PC4.

Copy the PDF file to a floppy and open the file on PC7. This PDF file can then be printed to the Laserjet III connected to PC7 or PC1. Upon loading there may occur an error message that one of the fonts is unable to be loaded.

If this occurs check the printed document. The reverse printing on the front page containing the volume number may not print properly. This is acceptable.

CD Rom Backups

On Sunday July 22, 2001, Rodney Johnson showed Evelin Halls how to burn data onto CD ROMs.

They burned one CD ROM disk containing website backups, a John D. Hughes photo album, WFB photos and other jpg images as well as the master jpg files from PC4.

Also, the software to use the Zip drive was installed on PC5A.

6. FUNDRAISING APPEALS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

Buddha Dhyana Dana Review

Fundraising has commenced for the printing and mailing of Buddha Dhyana Dana Review V11N1. This review will be produced during the month of August. Please place your donation for this Dhamma Dana in the Dana box in the Hall of Assembly.

A4 Paper Fundraiser

The A4 paper purchased last year from our A4 Paper Fundraiser is nearly finished.

In order to maintain a reliable supply of A4 paper for the year ahead we need to raise $700. This money will allow us to purchase a minimum of 125 reams of A4.

This way of purchasing our paper was very successful for us as we always had paper available and we saved money by purchasing at a discount price.

Members are requested to contribute to ensure we achieve this fundraising target.

Rose Bush Sales Fundraiser

MEMBERS’ DISCOUNT

Members will be given 4 rose bushes of their choice of colour from the PBR category. Members can also purchase at a 50% discount additional roses from the colours which do not have copyrights.

The discounted price is $5.00 per rose bush including gst.

Public sales

Public sales will commence ON Friday 3 august 2001.

Sales can be made to the public for $10.00 per rose bush including gst.

There is a bulk purchase discount. Purchases of 100 rose bushes will be given 8 additional rose bushes for free.

Frank Carter is delegating the role of the orders for the roses and frank carter is in charge of delivery of the roses.

Fundraising Collection of Beverage Costs

Members put in 20 cents per drink, there is no charge for Monks or the Teacher.

From the 9 to the 22 July 2001, these fundraising jars brought in a total of $33.20. Milk was purchased for $15.80.

This has been noted by the Treasurer. If you use this money to buy milk please place the receipt in the jar. State on the receipt that the money was from the jar. If you wish to donate milk, please place a receipt in the jar with your name on the receipt stating that this is a donation.

7. JOHN D. HUGHES NEWS

John D. Hughes’ long life is improving because he spends much time in a yidam form. The reason for this is that many Members support and help his yidam and her three children. Members also attend to the Centre.

John D. Hughes wishes to thank the persons who help him and his students greatly by washing clothes, cooking meals, washing dishes and other tasks that contribute to the upkeep of our Centre.

8. CURRENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERESTS

New Reading Room

In the library section of our new reading room the full Encyclopedia Britannica and Year Books will be on display, the full 20 Volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary, 30 Volumes of the Japanese National Treasure plus Reference Dictionaries in many languages. More reference books will follow.

CGR Database

We are building a new CGR database with Microsoft Access 97 to save time and improve performance and to keep an accurate record of our data. We are going to bring all address and mailing lists into one CGR database.

We can establish as many specified mailing lists and address databases as we like, but we really only want those we need. We want to enter an address only once with a choice given whether we want to put the address onto a mailing list, and if so, which one.

Work is in progress to find out what the correct mailing lists will be.

Annual President’s Report, including Return On Investment (ROI)

The President’s report will report a 25.3% ROI this year.

The previous years ROI was 47.8% for 2000 and 43.8 for 1999.

Return on Investment is the Income plus Increase in Net Assets divided by Net Assets at the start of the year. Although, the ROI for 2001 is less than the previous 2 years, 25.3% is an excellent return on investment. As our net assets increase it becomes more difficult to achieve such high return on investment.

Julian Bamford B.A. App. Rec., our President is currently researching extra material for inclusion in the Annual President’s report.

Donation of Chemicals to John D. Hughes

On Monday 23 July 2001, Vince Cavuoto, Julian Bamford and Jan Bennett returned from Sydney with seven boxes of mixed chemicals from Tech Traders. This company, located in Artarmon, Nth Sydney, buys and sells second hand scientific equipment.

The chemicals are to be used in the scientific laboratory for the geology museum. The manager of Tech Traders, Petros, has said he will contact us again when more chemicals become available.

The two day return trip to Sydney, took 29.5 hours driving over 1900 kilometres. Thank you to Vincenzo Cavuoto for supplying his van for this important journey, and to Frank Carter for arranging for the collection of the chemicals.

Several of contents of the boxes were cleaned and stored in Suite 4. Three boxes stored in Suite Ten remain to be processed.

Sariputta Room

We have obtained a 1000 gallon water tank to complete the storm water drainage system of the Sariputta Room. Once installed we will arrange for the final inspection certificate from the Shire building inspector.

Electricity connection to Suite 10, Suite 10A and Suite 11

We recently obtained a quote from the electrician to have electricity connected to Suite 10, Suite 10A and Suite 11. This will increase the usefulness and accessibility of these buildings

substantially.

The price quoted was $1490 inc. GST. We have accepted this quote and will pay for the connection with $1000 being donated by Rilla Oellien and $500 from initial sales of roses bushes.

The quote is based on us digging all the trenches for the cable ourselves.

In order that Members in the future will not dig into this cable and electrocute themselves the following safety system will be installed.

The electrical cable is contained in a plastic conduit and runs at a depth of 450mm below the surface. At 250mm below the surface above the electrical cable we will run a second plastic conduit which is empty.

Persons who dig in this location in the future will find the upper conduit and stop digging in this spot recognising it is the route of the electrical cable. Even if they damaged the upper conduit they would not be harmed.

The main channel is dug.

The digging work will be completed next weekend on the side extensions. Members are requested to please help.

Fire Wood

In order that sufficient supply of split fire wood is maintained Members are requested to split some wood every week.

Rodney Johnson has been taught how to use a chain saw.

A three year BDC(U) Ltd. plan for replenishment of stationery supplies has been drawn up by Lisa Nelson and Julian Bamford. Julian Bamford purchased a two month supply of needed stationery from Officeworks on Sunday 22 July 2001. We will spend up to $200 on the two month supplies.

We will track usage of stationery over the two month period and adjust the three year plan accordingly.

Kitchen Refurbished

During the second half of July 2001 the rear kitchen archway was re-shaped with plasterboard and finished with patching plaster and sanding. The eastern kitchen wall was re-surfaced with joint finish and patching plaster. Both were painted in Pink Granite acrylic paint on the 29 July 2001. This work was done by Member Rodney Johnson.
