3. SANGHA NEWS

Venerable Ajarn Chanphy Manivong

The "Self Interview" written by the Venerable Ajarn Chanhphy Manivong has been placed online on July 7 2001 by Evelin Halls.

This document is available on both websites, the www.bddronline.net.au and on www.bdcu.org.au. in the BDDR Vol.11 No.1.

This interview is also stored on our network at i:/ida/ajarn.rtf.

4. KEYNOTE OPPORTUNITIES

New Dining Room, Library, Reading Room and Kitchen

Planning for a new Dining Room, Library, Reading Room and Kitchen commenced on Saturday, 7 July 2001. This very auspicious day was the first day of the Buddhist Lent Khao Phansa Day (beginning of the Rainy Season).

The Devata who supervised the construction of the Sariputta Room and Store has been installed in its former place to supervise the construction of the new complex.

Visitors to the Centre on 7 June 2001 would have noted the roped off area in front of the Reading Room. This is the location for the new Dining Room, Library, Reading Room & Kitchen. The dimensions will be about 4.5 x 10 metres giving a floor area of 45sqm.

Steel windows 2.55m long by 2.09m high will be on the South and North walls. The footprint for our standard steel library shelves is 40 by 93cm = 3.72m2. Four (possibly 5) standard shelves are on the South wall of the complex.

Dining tables and library tables on an East-West line will run down the middle of the complex. Helen & George Costas will be asked to draw up the working plans. As soon as the Sariputta Room and Store has obtained the Building Inspectors approval, we will apply for a planning and building permit for the new complex.

John D. Hughes is about to request the Venerable Ajarn Manivong for the gift of one of his two Thai dinner sets for use in the new dining room.

Members should set up funding to pay for the work on the new complex. A start has been made with the rose bush fundraiser. On Sunday 8 July 2001, $710 was raised through the sale of rose bushes to Members.

Suite 14

Following our standard system the new John D. Hughes Reading Room, Library, Dining room and Kitchen complex will be referred to as Suite 14.

Since the present Reading Room & the new complex blend to make an extended Reading Room, the new area will be called the John D.Hughes Reading Room. This name matches with the John D. Hughes Collection comprising Library & artifacts.

On the official opening date (whenever that is) a plaque will be unveiled listing the name and the date it opened. To condition Members to this nomenclature the present Reading Room sign now

reads "The John D. Hughes Reading Room".

A glass display case with excellent geological specimens will be on display at the new John D. Hughes Reading Room.

The function of the new Reading Room is to encourage Members to read and, preferably, speed read. It is supposed if users are more comfortable, less crowded and in more well lit surroundings their reading time and quality of reading will increase significantly.

The scale we use for scoring performance level represents opinion rather than objective fact.

Our performance scale is:

5. Significantly and visibly improved,

4. Significantly improved, but not visible to buyer,

3. Not significantly changed,

2. Not significantly lowered, but not visible to buyer,

1. Significantly and visibly lowered.

We rate this project as a five. It is important and urgent we complete it as soon as possible.

Approach" (p.57)(1995) John Wiley & Sons Inc.

Laptops for the new John D. Hughes Reading Room

It is proposed that two or three laptops be provided for use of Members within the new John D. Hughes Reading Room.

These can be plugged into the network. Members are reminded they must not put beverages such as tea or coffee near laptops. 85% of computer malfunctions are caused by a cup of liquid poured onto keyboards. This can damage chips.

Members are reminded that they must not take beverages into the Library area or near company computers.

Members who do this face suspension for up to one month from the Library area, our computer systems and the John D. Hughes Reading Room.

The Eastern area of the new facility is a place where Members can drink beverages. We do not wish to draw a solid line between the John D. Hughes Reading Room and the Dining Room because this is against our policy of being flexible.

Speed Reading Training Recommended

Our Teacher, recommends all Members undertake our Speed Reading Course. This is provided free of charge to Members. Speed reading class times can be made by appointment.

Lisa Nelson has written a report called Speed Read to Win, Read Faster to Reach Your Goals in Record Time on the progress of Members undertaking the Speed Reading Classes. This file can be read on the LAN file reference: I:/cgr/sreadrp

Encouraging our future webmasters

Because we are now working on making all our Dhamma websites searchable, it is important to take care of the <Title> tag in the HTML code. Each webpage has its own title tag which should always have a correct title of the page, eg: the <Title> for this online Brooking Street Bugle should be <Brooking Street Bugle Issue No. 61, 13 July 2001>

Search engines pick up this title and display it. Therefore it is of importance to enter correct <Title> names for each HTML page.

5. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY NEWS

BizLink Update

We have a copy of BizLink 5.0 on CD ROM stored in Suite 2A software store. Members are encouraged to use these resources available.

BizLink provides browsing of HTML pages, search and retrieval of metadata stored in the BIS database and report generation of metadata search.

Online search facilities on our websites

Persons can now search the Blessings website and the BDDR Online website. By clicking the link “search this site”, visitors will be taken to the Simple Search facility created by Matt Wright. We see this as a major improvement to our websites and wish to make all our websites searchable.

The Simple Search program is free of charge and can be altered to suit the individual website. However, it cannot be sold. Details about the Copyright and Header for Simple Search Version 1.0 are stored in Suite 2 in the blue metal cabinet in the manila folder titled ‘Design of Websites’. The copyright is also available online at http://www.worldwidemart.com/scripts/readme/search.shtml.

Internal email count

Evelin Halls has counted her internal emails received in the financial year from 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001. The number is 1030 emails. Not included in the figure are the 'returned mail service unavailable' emails.

This figure shows the enormous amount of good information circulated at our Centre. Our internal email system is well used and has become an indispensable way of communication.

Internal Email privileges

Selected financial Members who put in considerable hours each week at our Centre, are given internal e-mail privileges. Some financial Benefactors who are Members, do not attend regularly. Such persons have no internal e-mail POP 3 address.

When Members are no longer financial or they do not attend regularly, their internal e-mail privileges are removed. Four Members have had their internal e-mail privileges withdrawn. These

Members are: A. Burling, Lyne Lehmann, S. Sukha and T. Huynh. These policies are to increase our hard disk space.

CD Writing on PC5A

We have a Hewlett Packard MultieRead CD- Writer 8200.

Anita Svensson, Lisa Nelson, Julian Bamford and Brendan Hall have successfully completed training on use of our CD-Writer software, Picture Easy 3.1 under the tutor of Rodney Johnson. We use Kodak CD-R Gold Ultima, 74 minute, 650 Megabyte disk for preference. We are seeking donations of blank CD’s.

Blessings Website

We have a new host for our Blessings website which is Oznet1. The new blessings website address is www.bdcublessings.net.au. Julian Bamford and Evelin Halls organised this new host and all registration details for our Blessings website.

Principal email restored

The principal email address for the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. is: wbu@bdcu.org.au

Evelin Halls, Julian Bamford and Frank Carter have documented all details for this email account including how to set it up. This information is stored in a manila folder in Suite 2, in the middle drawer of the blue metal filing cabinet.

The wbu@bdcu.org.au email account was inaccessible for about 3 months and is now successfully restored. Evelin and Julian untangled the errors that had stopped the email system from operating. There is a backlog of unanswered emails that will be addressed during the next fortnight.

ISP internet service provider-Unite

Evelin Halls and Julian Bamford have set up UNITE as our new ISP (internet service provider).

Our email address wbu@bdcu.org.au stays as our main email address. This email is set up on PC4 in Study area 1.

Our second email address is anitasvensson@bdcu.org.au which has been setup on PC2A in Administration Office #One.

We have a third email account buyresolved@buyresolved.com.au. This email account can be accessed from PC11 in the Sariputta room.

A fourth and last email account dragonking@buyresolved.com.au will be set up shortly on PC11.

The UNITE web address is www.unite.com.au. Their help desk telephone number 1800 55 66 00, and operates from 8.00am to 11.00pm weekdays.

The ISP Plan costs $24.95 per month and is an unlimited access plan, to the internet and email.

Details on the email password, settings and user name can be found at file reference PC6 i:\ida\uniteisp and under UNITE ISP in the second draw blue cabinet Study Area 1.

6. FUNDRAISING APPEALS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

Rose Bush Sales Fundraiser

On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July 2001 approximately 3000 roses were collected by our Members from Australian Roses 215 Glenfern Road, Upwey. Thank you to the owner of Australian Roses, Mr Les Day who so kindly donated these wonderful resources.

There are two categories of roses:

The first category - PBR ( patented breeders’ rights) have copyrights associated with their variety and cannot be sold by the Centre or its Members to any persons or organisation.

These can only be given away.

the colours available in this category are:

pale pink- PBR (group2)

white - pbr (group 3)

white - pBR (group 7)

orange - PBR (group 9)

orange - PBR (group 12)

red - PBR (group 14)

The second category can be sold to members ONLY at this time. Once we have approval from the Consumer & Business Affairs we will be able to sell these to the public as well.

The colours available in this category are:

white (group 1)

purple (group 4)

yellow (group 6)

white (group 8)

cream with pink edge (group 10)

pale pink (group 11)

white with pink edge (group 13)

MEMBERS’ DISCOUNT

Members will be given 4 rose bushes of their choice of colour from the PBR category. Members can also purchase at a 50% discount additional roses from the colours which do not have copyrights.

The discounted price is $5.00 per rose bush including gst.

anita svensson is in charge of the orders for the roses and frank carter is in charge of delivery of the roses.

Public sales within two months

Once approval has been attained for the fundraiser, sales can be made to the public for $10.00 per rose bush including gst. We will notify you of this date.

There is a bulk purchase discount. Purchases of 100 rose bushes will be given 8 additional rose bushes for free.

The Benefit-Cost Ratio

The benefit-Cost ratio which is also known as the Profitability index is the present net value of all future expected cash flows divided by the initial cash investment. If this ratio is greater than 1.0 the project may be accepted.

Because of gas & electricity costs associated with the John D. Hughes Reading Room, we have decided to collect a token 20 cents (including GST) per cup Coffee, Tea, Fruit Juice and Soft drink supplied to Members, which costs our organisation money. We do not make a profit at this price, however this helps reimburse some of our operating costs. We estimate there is about 25,000 of these type of drinks served per year. So, at a nominal 20 cents per drink we would raise $5,000 per annum. This would increase the profitability index to an acceptable figure. Water is

free.

The Sangha and Teachers are not to be charged. Most other visitors will be asked to contribute 20 cents or more to help meet our increased running cost which arises from the new facility.

User pays applies to Members in this area. To condition Members we are placing a Dana jar on the present dining table. We start the collection process on Monday 9 July 2001.

John D. Hughes is preparing a paper having a complete discussion of profitability models, which are orientated towards evaluation of projects that result in new products.

Pacifico's & Dean's method will be discussed.

8. CURRENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERESTS

We are building a new CGR database with Microsoft Access 97 to save time and improve performance and to keep an accurate record of our data. We are going to bring all address and mailing lists into one CGR database.

We can establish as many specified mailing lists and address databases as we like, but we really only want those we need. We want to enter an address only once with a choice given whether we want to put the address onto a mailing list, and if so, which one.

Work is in progress to find out what the correct mailing lists will be.

Julian Bamford B.A. App. Rec., our President is currently researching material for inclusion in the Annual President’s report .

We have a new website for the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review. Website address is www.bddronline.net.au Loading has commenced. We intend to load and edit back issues to this site.

The Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. Library Heritage and the cultivation of Scholarship

The Buddha taught that the highest Dana is Dhamma Dana, given this truth the building, cataloging and preservation of Buddhist libraries is a noble path of practice.

As like a deep spring

clear, still, pure and lucid

are the wise hearing Dhamma

with a pure mind rejoicing

(Dharmapada)

Scholarship is one of the five styles of our Centre and our Founder John D. Hughes guides Members in the way of the library to cognate the true value and precious nature of one Buddhist Library to the longevity of the Buddha Dhamma. Our mission is to utilise present global forces to cause our Buddha Dhamma library to stay serviceable for 500 years. This praiseworthy vision to the preservation of libraries are clearly reflected in Walter Cronkite words when he stated:

“Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared

to that of an ignorant nation.”

We are the oldest Dhamma Centre in Victoria that has stayed with our library located at the one suitable location. It is not advisable to move the location of libraries because items can be lost or damaged. Generally, the ancient Shrine of the Deva protectors of the library (the Deva of Learning) is destroyed when a new location is established.

The story of the library begins in 1977. The library, now called the John D. Hughes Collection, is owned and managed by the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey} Ltd. Our Teacher corresponded with 14 countries to find the material to build the collection and consulted with Members of the multicultural Australian community to ensure the library collection policies were fair.

Through networking, the library recorded and gathered original Australian information that is unavailable in the reference collections of the Australia's older, larger, rich and powerful institution 's libraries.

Our multilingual reference library is an excellent environment for Buddhist study and research. The John D. Hughes Collection offers an extensive range of resources to assist in the learning of Buddha Dhamma, and includes:

* Rare and valuable Buddhist Texts including the complete Buddhist Canon.

* Commentaries by renowned Buddhist Teachers.

* Buddhist artifacts and ritual objects from all traditions.

* Buddhist Journals and Newsletters.

* Audio tape recordings of Buddhist Teachings.

* Buddhist "Books of Guidance" in English and various languages.

* Calligraphy.

* Video tapes of Buddhist events.

It is an inspirational example of providing a resource for future generations. The library provides a strong local database for those who need written practical or theoretical understanding of Buddha Dhamma in the English language.

This library, now listed on Australian libraries gateway, has become a library of national importance and its publications reach a world audience. This project is ongoing and is housed at the premises of an Australian peak organisation that is a regional Centre of the World Fellowship of Buddhists. Details of the library, including work in progress, can be found at www. bdcu.org.au

Small gaps in weatherboard of Sariputta Room

Our builder, Jeff Radford, has advised that these gaps will not interfere with the passing of final inspection from the Building Inspector. He has suggested we wait one year for the shrinkage of these weatherboards to be completed and then fill in the small gaps between them with “No Gaps”.

Installation of Water Tank at the North Side of the Sariputta Room

This tank will be installed as soon as possible and plumbed into the East side of the roof of the Sariputta Room. Its overflow will go into the Australia Pond. When this tank is installed, the building is ready for its final building inspection. Our Teacher wishes to thank all those who helped in the construction of the new bedroom and store.

Donation of over 3000 rose bushes

Les Day, owner of Australian Roses at 215 Glenfern Road, Upwey, kindly donated approximately 3000 mature rose bushes to our Centre.

Les is selling his property and has ceased trading as a rose grower.

On Saturday 7 July and Sunday 8 July 2001 many Members helped collect the roses from the rose farm and transport them to the Centre. Some roses were also taken to Rodney Johnson's, and Leila Lamer’s property for storage.

The Members who helped were Lisa Nelson, Rodney Johnson, Leila Lamers, Jan and Jacki Bennett, Frank Carter, David Igracki, Brent Kerr and Vincent Cavuoto. Julie O’Donnell, Isabella Hobbs, Anita Svensson and Jocelyn Hughes prepared lunch for the Members during these two days.

Members are to be given 4 rose bushes of their choice as a gift by the Centre. Anita Svensson is coordinating further sales of roses to Members at a special discount price. An application is being made to Consumer and Business Affairs Victoria for permission to fundraise by selling roses to the public.

The roses are in a range of colours and of excellent commercial quality. They will make beautiful gifts to friends and family members. Les Day from Australian Roses has given us the following advice for the care of our rose bushes.

We do not need to feed the roses with any type of food. The rockwool the bushes grow in does need to be kept moist.

Les said it is sufficient if it rains a minimum of once per week to keep the moisture content of the rockwool. If it doesn't rain we should water the roses weekly.

After 6 to 8 weeks the stems will produce green shoots. The roses can be planted or left above ground for many months provided the moisture content is maintained.

Laser Printing on A4 Paper

The costs of printing on A4 paper on our laser printers are as follows: Toner cartridge $48.00 each. One cartridge will produce about 4000 copies which is a per unit cost of 1.2 cents.

As a result of our A4 fundraiser we bulk purchased photocopy paper for $4.80 per ream. (after GST was claimed back) This is .96 of a cent per page.

Depreciation costs of our laser printers are $80 per annum each over a three year life cycle. This equates to approx .006 cents per page.

Servicing costs are about $60 per annum which is .005 cents per page.

The total printing costs per page is 2.27 cents. (This does not include electricity consumption costs).

A comparative costing for commercial laser printing is 8 cents per page.

Preservation with Cabot’s

On Tuesday 3 July 2001, Isabella Hobbs and Peter Boswell painted the new fence next to the Australia Pond, the Ch'an Academy windows and the windows in the Fragrance Corner (verandah).

A second coat was placed on the fence on Wednesday 4 July. We used Cabot's "natural decking oil" premium woodcare on all three areas.

13. MEMBERS’ NEWS

Evelin Halls has been appointed as a Director of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.

We thank Clara Iaquinto for her contribution as a Director. Clara resigned as Director on 29 June 2001 due to health reasons.

Jeffrey Radford, a Life Member of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd., recently worked with a team of volunteers at the Chithurst Buddhist Monastery, West Sussex, England. A 1862 coach house building was re-constructed using the green sandstone to form the walls for a new Meditation Hall. The roof framing was constructed from English oak obtained from the Monastery’s own forest, using a 500 year old English barn technique. This technique uses mortice and tenon rather than nails. Jeffrey and the group used Masonite I Beams shipped from Sweden, as this is the only country which makes them, to raise the roof 300mm. The Masonite I Beams were fixed to the top of the English oak frame then covered with sarking boards and the cavities filled with insulation. This project took the volunteer group three weeks to complete and about 1 million Australia dollars to finance. This group contributed to the finishing construction of a Meditation Hall for the Temple using 21st Century technology. This Meditation Hall is designed to last over 300 years, preserving a place to practice Dhamma. Jeffrey and the other members of the group made much merit by contributing to this project for the Chithurst Buddhist Monastery. Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu.
