6. FUNDRAISING APPEALS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

Federation 100 Hours Project

Our Centre has been offered the services of a lawyer to provide us with 20 hours free legal advice and guidance by The Public Interest Law Clearing House (PILCH).

Several months ago we applied to the Federation 100 Hours Project for legal help in the area of establishing a legally secure basis for our development and growth under the Shire of Yarra Ranges Planning Regulations.

The Federation 100 Hours Project was set up by the Victorian State Government to provide free professional assistance to local charities and volunteer associations in the State of Victoria during 2001. This is one of Victoria’s activities to celebrate and commemorate the 100th anniversary of Federation.

As a result of our application to the Federation 100 Hours Project we have been contacted by PILCH who have offered to arrange lawyers to assist us free of charge.

Administration Office #One

We use space wisely. The 17.25m2 of floor space for the Administration Office #One was refurbished over the June Five Day Course 2001 by a team of Members lead by Anita Svensson and Lisa Nelson.

A screen has been placed to add to worker’s privacy.

Because much large office equipment must fit into the Administration Office #one, we measured the equipment and drew to scale a map of the area and the office equipment.

Using this method we were able to see what optimum positioning using the available space. We moved the heavy equipment with ease. PC1Aand PC13A (LAN connected) and PC2A(Internet connected) are available for use in the office.

Thank-you to John D. Hughes, Rodney Johnson, Frank Carter, Vanessa Macleod, Lenore Hamilton, Pam Adkins and Amber Svensson for helping design our infrastructure.

Master do list cascades to all other do lists

The Do-List that applies to all CGR task unit Members. Commencing 11 June 2001 week ending 16 June 2001 had 16 AAA priorities, 8AA priorities and 8A priorities. Most of these were done over the five day Course. Anita Svensson will review this list to keep it current.

New Photocopier

We rely on donations of second hand equipment to run our operations.

We wish to thank our Member, Peter Jackson who has donated a secondhand photocopier to the Centre. The copier is a Mita Model 1255DC which is an A4 unit capable of doing reduction from A3 size.

The copier was serviced by Frank Carter and will be delivered to the Centre on Friday 15 June. This copier seems to be giving better copy quality than the one we have been using so we will install as our main copier. The existing copier will become our backup unit.

CD Writing.

Frank Carter recently acquired a HP 8200+ Surestore CD-Writer on behalf of our Centre. This CD-writer allows copying of data such as documents, photos and audio to a blank CD which can then be read and accessed using any other computer CD reader.

This process will enable us digitally capture images and scan photos at high resolution without having to be concerned about the use of hard drive space; backup our data to a more stable media than at present, and allow faster access times to data as it is organized onto CD.

One hundred blank CD’s were purchased with Dana provided by some of our Members. Specifications are as follows for Members wishing to purchase blank CD’s for use at our Centre :- Kodak CD-R Gold Ultima (cat. 403 1597).

Easy Cd-Writer is the software application used to write CD’s. This easy to use software also enables jewel case labels to be generated.

Several Members have been trained in and are competent to use the CD-Writer. They are Julian, Anita, Lisa, and Vanessa. Most Members will be trained in this core competency over the coming weeks.

The weekly “Buddhist Hour” radio broadcasts can be heard at 11:00am Sundays on Hillside Radio 87.6FM and 88.0FM and 1620 AM in Victoria, Australia.

The 'Buddhist Hour' radio show is broadcast live on Internet radio at www.gbradio.com on Sundays from 11am to 12pm. This means that persons from all around the world are able to hear the Radio Broadcast that consists of chanting and Buddha Dhamma texts.

Lisa Nelson and Julian Bamford share the position of Program Producer.

Thank you Brendan and Jeanette Grainger at Hillside Radio and to Great Britain Radio and their technicians and webmasters.

Creating Radio Scripts

Please create and save all radio scripts as Rich Text Format only. Rich Text Format is compatible with ISYS Text Retrieval and also suitable for HTML conversion.

A template has been created to facilitate obtaining the correct format for a new radio script.

The template is at I:/IDA/radionew.rtf

All you have to do when creating a new radio script is:

1. open the template called radionew.rtf in Lotus Word Pro

2. update the header, date and script number

3. save as radioX.rtf (insert the current script number for X).

Please always ensure that the script number is in order.

Preparation for PHOTOLAN

The database software is being written.

We are preparing for the building of PhotoLAN, which will require photo's to be stored on CD discs correctly, for a 2 second retrieval target. If a photo is sideways, please rotate it for vertical viewing, before burning onto a CD.

We think it will have three servers as it develops. When burning digital photo images onto CD's, first check to make sure photos are correctly positioned.

Visually check photographs on Kodak Picture Easy Software before download, from camera to PC, as some photos are taken in vertical format and require rotation on download from the camera. Rotate to correct position, save then download to PC for burning to CD.

File Backup Procedure

When files are copied or backed up onto floppy disks, Zip discs or CD’s they should be clearly labelled so that their contents can be easily recognised.

The CD disc machine has software to write details of contents and makes our copyright standard notices at the same time.

Each CD must be labelled with contents and the disks should be dated with the date of production. This labelling procedure will enable us to quickly find CD files stored and will help in the archival of such materials.

Avery Label Wizard Software

The 'Avery Label Wizard Software Version 2.0 CDRom from S1 FC5 (blue filing

cabinet under printer in Suite 1) has been relocated to Suite 2A.

The CD is located on the central software shelving under A.

Suite 2A I.T. Storage Area for Software

There is advantages to having a central store room.

During our recent June Five Day Bhavana Course an I.T. software store was setup in Suite 2A. Retrieval times have been improved.

All current software programs are now stored in this location.

Also current and past backup floppy discs, data disks, Zip disks and CD Roms are stored on their own shelves in the same Suite 2A area.

The Kodak camera, Iomega Zip drive and network connection tool kit are now kept in the Suite 2A I.T. store because it is a secure environment.

Current software, and all data disks, Zip discs and backup discs will no longer be stored in any other area of the Centre.

Older software programs which are not installed on any Centre or John D. Hughes computer will be stored in Suite 10A.

Recent painting around the Centre

We live in a Rain Forest. The local weather in the hills is more severe than in Melbourne. Railings need to be painted to protect them from the weather.

The main safety railings on the Emerald Pavilion have been undercoated with white

acrylic paint, and given a first coat of Brunswick Green - Dulux

Weathershield Low Sheen Acrylic. A second coat of the same paint was applied later.

This painting was done by Members Vincenzo Cavuoto, Lainie Smallwood, Amber

Svensson, Philip Svensson and Julie O'Donnell.

The railings on the stairs to the Sariputta Room and railings on the Store stairs have been undercoated with two layers of white acrylic paint.

The stair railings will be painted with Iced Coffee colour paint, the same colour as used on the outside of the the Sariputta Room and Store.

The undercoat painting was done by Members Julie O'Donnell, Lainie Smallwood and Amber Svensson.
