4.0 NEWS OF PROGRAM CHANGES

History was made on 2 December 2000 when the first digital editorial of the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review Volume 10 No. 3, titled 'First BDDR editorial Online' was placed on the www.companyontheweb.com/buddhamap web site, at approximately 0015am by Web Master Evelin Halls. This is the first editorial online.

The first BSB (new series) Issue 48 was place on www.companyontheweb.com/buddhamap Web Site on Thursday 21 December 2000.

Thank you to Evelin Halls. Saddhu Saddhu Saddhu

We welcome the Bodhisattva Protector pigeon who has come to live at this Temple. He arrived before we went to the WFB conference. His name is Svaha. He stays and protects our Centre, Teacher and his Students.

Svaha has his nest in the amenities block.

Because of increased parallelism and like focus, fusion between these two Task Units has meant that they have become reconciled. On 28 December 2000 it was decided to merge the Knowledge Management and International Dhamma Activities Task Units.

Fusion of the two Task Units has been proceeding for some time with sharing of common web sites. This fusion peaked at the World Fellowship of Buddhists Conference in Bangkok Thailand in December 2000.

Our Members who attended were: John D Hughes, Julian Bamford, Vincenzo Cavuoto, Jocelyn Hughes, Julie O’Donnell, Vanessa Macleod and Anita Svensson, who worked together to represent our Centre as well as providing support for the conference secretariat.

There are two other Task Units that remain separate: LAPAM and CGR. Local and international communication is identical in structure because we treat our writing in English as a Second Language (E.S.L).

We have not written a separate Knowledge Management Task Unit report.

We will now have joint Vice Presidents for the IDA Task Unit. They are John D. Hughes Vice President and Julian Bamford Joint Vice President.

John D. Hughes manages the International Dhamma Activities (IDA) Task Unit.

5.0 SANGHA NEWS

5.1 Opening of the Dhamma Sarana Sri Lankan Temple

On Sunday December 10, 2000 Tim Browning, as a representative of John Hughes, who was attending the World Fellowship of Buddhists Conference, attended the opening of the first stage of the Dhamma Sarana Sri Lankan Temple at Greens Road, Keysborough.

The temple opening was a major milestone in the history of the Buddhist Sri Lankan Association of Victoria. The construction of this first stage of the Dhamma Sarana Temple was commenced early this year following the Foundation Stone Ceremony in December 1999.

The opening ceremonies were blessed by the presence of many members of the Sangha including; from Sri Lanka, Venerable Professor K. Vajira and Venerable Udagaladeniye Somaransi; from Dhamma Sarana, Chief Incumbent Venerable Vijitha Thero and Venerable R. Metagil; from Victorian Buddhist Vihara- Noble Park, Venerables D. Vimalanda and K. Vidura; from Sangha Loka - Malvern, Venerable Jimalankar; from Adelaide Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara, Chief Incumbent Venerable Sumedha; from Dhamma Deepa Meditation Centre - Dandenong, Chief Incumbent Venerable A. Sangananda and Venerable V. Sumanasara; from Ringwood Buddhist Meditation Centre, Venerable Bhante Kassapa; from

Katoomba Meditation Centre - NSW, Venerable Silarapana; from Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple - Canberra, Venerable Nandarapana; from Western Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara - St Albans, Venerable Uduwara Dewananda; from Yuroke, Venerable W. Chandaratana and two resident monks; from Cambodian Buddhist Temple - Springvale, Venerable Muni; and two representatives from the Thai Buddhist Monastery.

Other special guests included His Excellency Mr H.K.J.R.Bandara, The High Commissioner for Sri Lanka; Councillor Angela Long, the Mayor of Dandenong; Timothy Holding - the Victorian Parliamentary Member for Springvale; Badra Samarakoon, President of the Buddhist Sri Lankan Association of Victoria; Mrs Elizabeth Bell; representatives of the police and local city councillors; and Tim Browning representing the Buddhist Discussion Centre, Upwey.

Hundreds of members of the Sri Lankan community and many children from the Sunday School were also present.

The ceremonies began with a colourful procession led by traditional drummers followed by children wearing traditional costumes and carrying Sri Lankan flags. Some of the young girls performed traditional dancing and there was even a small elephant (actually two children in disguise). Next followed venerable members of the Sangha and then official guests who were led to their seats.

Nominated special guests were then invited to light the traditional oil lamp which was followed by recital of stanzas of victory blessings by children from the Sunday School.

Guests were then led by the Sangha in chanting Observation of the Five Precepts.

The gathering was then welcomed in an address which was given by Badra Samarakoon, President of the Buddhist Sri Lankan Association of Victoria. She spoke of the occasion as being a golden milestone in the history of their Association welcomed everyone to their Centre of peace and tranquillity.

Following the President’s speech, a letter was read from the Governor of Victoria, the Hon Sir James Gobbo who was unable to attend due to ill health. Sir James Gobbo congratulated the Association on their achievement of opening Dhamma Sarana and the importance of the strengthening of the diverse cultures residing in Australia.

Two young students of the Sunday School then gave very eloquent speeches detailing the importance of there a being a Centre where future generations of children will be able to come and learn the Dhamma.

The Chief Incumbent of Dhamma Sarana, Venerable Vijtha Thero then spoke to the gathering. He said that truth is not sectarian or national and that the Centre was open to all peoples to attend and learn.

Venerable Thero then unveiled a name board and as joined by Venerable Sumanasara Maha Nayaka Thero to unveil the building pinnacle.

Speeches then followed by the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, His Excellency Mr H.K.J.R. Bandara who then unveiled a plaque commemorating the opening of the temple.

Speeches were also given by the Mayor of City of Greater Dandenong Councillor Cr. Angela Long; and the Member for Springvale, Mr Timothy Holding; and a vote of thanks delivered by Vipula Samarakoon and Wasana Weeraraine.

To close the ceremonies there was a transfer of blessings by the Maha Sangha.

The official guests were invited into the Temple for devotional offering of flowers to the shrine of the Buddha Rupa.

This member then had the good fortune to drive Venerable Bhante Kassapa to the Dhamma Deepa Meditation Centre in Dandenong where he met with a number of the Sangha including the Venerable monks from Sri Lanka and was blessed by them while a photo was taken.

6.8 Buddha Dhamma Chanting On-site

The Saddharama Smriti Upasthana Sutra mentions 32 benefits of hearing Dhamma. They are:

When a master preaches the Dharma, he is like a parent to his audience, and he is like a bridge across the river of birth and death.

When one hears what one has never heard before, one attains new realisations. Once one has knowledge, one can begin to think about what one has learned.

Once one has begun to think about what one has learned, one has truly begun to practice self-cultivation.

Once one has begun to practice self-cultivation, one will abide in peace. Once one has begun to abide in peace, one can begin to benefit others; and then a mutually beneficial interaction can begin.

If one is able to abide in peace, then even hardship will not seem disturbing.

If one listens to the Dharma, then roots of goodness will begin to grow where formerly they did not grow.

If one contemplates what one has learned, then one will become prepared for liberation.

Listening to the Dharma can lead people with perverse views to change their views to right ones and listening to the Dharma can help people destroy unwholesome thoughts whenever they arise.

Listening to the Dharma increases goodness of mind and rids one of evil mental causes and conditions.

Listening to the Dharma keeps one from being scattered and disorganised in one’s activities.

Listening to the Dharma leads one toward the company of good people and leads one away from selfishness and falseness.

Listening to the Dharma encourages one to care for one’s parents and believe in karma; it also shows one how to live a long life.

Listening to the Dharma leads one to be raised by others and protected by heavenly beings, and it causes one’s deepest wishes to be fulfilled.

Listening to the Dharma brings one all the joys of the Dharma and keeps one from sloth and laziness.

Listening to the Dharma causes one to progress quickly, to understand gratitude and to think often on the meaning of death.

If one has listened often to the Dharma, at the time of one’s death, one will not cling to life or feel remorse for what one has done.

Ultimately, listening to the Dhamma will lead one to Nirvana.

You can hear Buddha Dhamma Chanting in the Hall of Assembly at our Centre from 6.30am to 7.00am on regular dates throughout the year.

Chanting is scheduled to coincide with the four phases of the moon. Julian Bamford is organising the sessions.

The next Chanting session will be on Wed 10 Jan on the new moon.

All Members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

There is an English translation of the Iti Pi So done by Francisco So and given to our Centre, but the English Iti Pi So translation on the current chanting sheet is not the one done by Francisco and therefore cannot be used and retyped for a radio script, for example. We can use these translations for study of chanting, but we do NOT have permission to distribute them in any other written form.

A Roster for Preserving the Buddha Dhamma Teachings by John D. Hughes was prepared on 6 January 2001. Created by: Lisa Nelson, Julian Bamford and Evelin Halls

8.0 JDH ROSTER NEWS

8.1 Attendant Roster

Members, why not start the year 2001 by putting your name and available times into the Roster Book to make good causes to continue coming to the Centre.

The Roster 2000 folder is kept in the “Work In Progress” tray located on the brown storage unit in the CGR office. Members attending the Centre during the day are requested to place their names on the Roster.

If you require help please see Lisa or Anita.

9.0 JDH NEWS

9.1 JDH’s Health and Good Rest

Preserving our culture for the next 500 years. It is our responsibility to ensure that the Centre continues to operate.

For our Teacher’s health and good rest and for the safe and continuous operation of our Centre, there must be at least one Member in attendance at the Centre at all times.

In order to get to this ‘best practice’ initiative, CGR task unit has developed a ‘Roster Book 2000’. Our time is important. Writing our names into a Roster book allows persons to schedule their time correctly and ensures that our Teacher is attended to at all times.

This takes the flurry and worry out of "guessing who will come to the Centre today".

The Attendant Roster system works like this:

1. There is a black Roster book labelled ‘ Roster Book 2000’ that is located in the CGR office in the tray marked "Work in Progress".

2. Inside the ‘Roster Book 2000’ you will find a roster - a calendar for the next 6 weeks. A sample of the roster is attached. The roster has Members’ names along the horizontal axis and the days of the week along the vertical axis.

3. Members need to write their names in the first column of each page and then the times they will be at the Centre in the column corresponding to the date they will attend.

4. Should Members be unable to attend, they must notify the Centre ASAP to allow alternative arrangements to be made.

5. Members are requested to appoint themselves as ‘back-up’ to replace persons who are unable to fulfil their role as attendants.

The job description for BDC (U) Ltd. Centre Attendant is attached to this document.

9.2 JDH’s Trip to The Nobbies

JDH went to Cowes on Phillip Island on the 13 and 14 of December, with Maria Pannozzo and Lisa Nelson. The sea air was beneficial for JDH’s health.

9.3 JDH’s Internet email

JDH’s Internet email, wbu@bdcu.org.au, is working now. The email server is operating from San Clemente in the US. Shall there arise the need it will take approximately 15 minutes to create a new account. The process of creating a new account is done from within a

web interface. We can also have as many accounts as required.

10.0 MEMBER’S NEWS

Dinner was served outside in the garden which was decorated with over 150 flowers placed into the trees and shrubs. This is the meaning of true association between friends that our Members experience together.

Arrisha presented our Teacher with some mineral specimens for his museum. Some photographs of the evenings special sunset can be seen on our website www.skybusiness.com/j.d.hughes

The weather was splendid and all Members affirmed that they intend to practise in the Year of the Snake. At midnight, Members did their second radio broadcast for that day. The text of the radio broadcast can be seen at our website www.bdcublessings.one.net.au

10.4 "Future Direction(s)" plan for Melbourne

On Thursday 7 December Frank Carter attended the State Government of Victoria's community consultation meeting as part of a process to develop a 20 - 30 year "future direction(s)" plan for Melbourne.

The forum for the Yarra Ranges was held at the Baron of Beef in Sherbrooke.

Approximately 150 representatives from the local community provided views and ideas about such things as:

- What things did each participant most like about Melbourne?

- What things did each participant least like about Melbourne?

- What are your concerns about Melbourne's future?

- What actions need to be taken to make Melbourne an even greater city?

About 18 months ago John D. Hughes wrote a submission to the Shire of Yarra Ranges providing suggestions for them to use in forming their own 20 year Corporate Plan.

This document (PC10 word\yrcorppl) was used by Frank to contribute to the community consultation meeting he attended.

10.5 Information About the Bodhi Tree (For more information see BDDR)

The Bodhi Tree belongs to the family 'Ficus Religiousis' and is commonly found in many South East Asian countries.

The mature tree has an extensive root system that enables it to take up large amounts of water during the monsoon seasons of its native region.

To emulate the monsoon season and to encourage the root system to grow deep into the ground, it is better to give the tree a good water for two hours once every three or four days over the summer months, rather than to give it a shallow watering of 10 minutes.

Shallow watering encourages surface roots that can be damaged by the hot sun, drenching encourages the growth of deep roots as the water sinks further down into the ground and

the roots grow to those depths.

In winter the ground should be left quite dry to slightly moist due to the fact that this species does not usually grow in cold climates. During Melbourne's winter season the tree goes into 'slow mode'. This is why the BDC(U)Ltd tree looses its leaves after winter.

The leaves that fell each year are pressed and preserved as gifts.
