Life Story of Master Andre Sollier
Over the past few months, Master Andre Sollier has detailed the story of his life in private meetings at his home and Satsuma Dojo in Mitcham, Victoria.
This special project was intitiated by a request in response to which Master Sollier kindly gave his permission for us to write the story of his life, including memories of his time with John D. Hughes and the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.
In his autobiography, Master Sollier talks about his childhood in France during the years of the second world war, his work as an illustrator and painter in Denmark and Sweden, travels to the East and his years in Japan.
He tells of his years in Japan during which he studied Sumi-e, Karate, Archery and Ikebana, and of his move to Australia where he met our late Teacher John D. Hughes, teaching Sumi-e at the Chan Academy Australia for almost two decades.
The final draft of Master Andre Sollier's life story is at the editing stage. Leanne Eames is currently assisting with editing and writing of the draft. When completed the life story will be published with photographs in our online journal the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review at www.bddronline.net.au

The photocopy machine can use any brand without problems.
JDH Digitisation Project
The Digitisation Paper on digitisation of the John D. Hughes Collection of audio recordings is currently being developed. See the Information Technology section for details.
Information Communication Technologies at the WBU

Lotus Word Pro
Lotus was re-installed by Evelin onto our upgraded computers PC1A in the Sariputta Room and PC7A in the Library.
You can access Lotus by going to:
Start Menu - Programs - Lotus Smart Suite - Lotus Word Pro 97
PLEASE NOTE: Lotus was re-installed so that we are able to read our Lotus files (.lwp). However, please do not create new files with Lotus. You can use Open Office or Word on PC1A. Please save your files as Rich Text Format (rtf) as this is the standard and we think that this file format has a good chance to be around for at least 500 years.
ISYS
One copy of the Isys Text Retrieval System will be loaded onto PC7A in the Library. The other copy will be installed onto Anita's PC.
Until ISYS is installed, please use the LAN2 search function available through the Internet Explorer. Just click on the link "Search network drive" to access this facility.
ISYS will be installed by Evelin as soon as John Watson has increased our LAN disk space.
New help with our IT projects
Lee Robilliard has visited our Centre last week. She is a highly skilled software programmer and has offered to help us with various IT projects such as our Websites, Digitisation Project and Photolan.
Lee has been coming to our Centre each Friday and will come again on Friday 18 December, 2004.
Thank you Lee for offering your expertise! We are looking forward to working with you.
Spyware Installed
On 8 December 2004 the software "Ad-Aware SE Personal" from Lavasoft was installed on our Internet PC4. The program found 164 critical objects that were removed. This software is free and can be updated for free.
A Note on PDF Files
Please take note that the Open Office software has a function to easily export files directly as PDF.
PDF files have the advantage that they cannot be altered. PDF files are seen as a true record of a document because they represent what the document was at a certain point of time. In terms of records management, none of our files are a "record", as they can be changed at any time.
We are considering converting our John D. Hughes Collection transcripts into PDF files rather than HTML files for the Internet as they can be printed easily and cannot be altered.
Upgrading of Computer Systems
On Wednesday 15 December, PC4 will be upgraded to a PIII 550 Mhz. This new computer will have a CD-ROM burner, 56k modem, and 30 Gb of hard disk space.
The remaining upgrade work to be done is for LAN1 to be installed on a new computer connected to LAN2. John Watson is currently working on this project. It is anticipated this will be completed within the next two weeks.
Broadband Internet Connection
Our current internet connection is via a 56k modem dial-up service. Due to the requirement of uploading John D. Hughes' digitised Dhamma Teachings to the edharma website, we have investigated the cost of connecting to the internet via broadband technology.
Using our current system, it takes approximately one hour to upload one side of a recorded cassette tape to the internet. Broadband access will allow us to streamline our processes.
The cost of connecting to broadband turns out to be less than our current arrangements for our dial-up service.
An application will be made during the next week to connect to the broadband service provided by Optus.
Printer Upgrade
The laser printer in the Sariputta Room and the laser printer
in the Library have had increased memory installed. This will
enable them to print complex tables and larger graphic files with
ease.

JDH Collection Audio Tape Digitisation Project
The mandala on page 34 of this edition of the Brooking Street Bugle, called "Propagation of Buddha Dharma Teachings in the 21st Century" shows the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.
The four sides of the mandala represent the four forms in which we propagate the Buddha Dharma Teachings; Verbal Teachings, Printed Teachings, Digital Teachings and Practice Teachings.
There are many ways these four Teaching forms are used at the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. to propagate the Buddha Dharma however the mandala is drawn on this occasion to show those processes which are associated with our new digitisation capability.
This digitisation capability is drawn on the mandala as a process which functions within each of the four Teaching forms. We are updating the mandala to include this resource.
The digitisation function inputs into nine teaching projects or processes also appearing in the mandala. These nine are:
1. Radio Program Scripts
2. Transcripts of the Digitised Audio Recordings
3. Documentation of the Digitisation Systems
4. Digitisation Training Manual
5. Audio files and transcripts on our Internet websites
6. ISYS searching of John Hughes verbal teachings on out LAN
7. Preservation archives of John Hughes audio Buddha Dharma Teachings
8. Members can produce their own CD Rom copies of John Hughes
Buddha Dharma Teachings.
9. Videos
By updating the mandala of the propagation of Buddha Dhamma Teachings in the 21st century the devas can understand the new digitisation process. They can see how it fits into our Buddha Dharma practice, propagation systems and projects. Then the deva's can then extend their help and protection to include this new 21st Century process which they have not seen before.
Not only does the mandala need to be updated but also the information we have on our LAN about these nine processess needs to be revisited. A new layer of information needs to be added to the written information on each of these nine to show how digitisation is part of the way that process now functions.
The page following that showing the mandala describes how the digitisation process flows into the ongoing projects overtime such as the Radio Program.
The various functions are identified and also that there are Teams of Members who perform these functions such as the Transcription Team, the Radio Team and so on.
Members are encouraged to learn and participate in many of these stages or even all of them and therefore our system is not dependent in any area on one person.
Ideally every Member would each be trained in every part of the system and that would make it very robust and resilient.
Please add your name to any Team you wish to participate in and ask to be taught how to do it by one of the persons already in that team.
Historic uploading date
On the night of 5 December 2004, Evelin uploaded the first two audio files with Buddha Dhamma Teachings of the late Master John D. Hughes to our website www.edharma.org.

Thank you to Frank and Paul who have helped to make this possible by their committed work on the digitisation project. Thank you to all beings who have helped.
We are planning to load many more audio files of the Teachings
of John D. Hughes.
