Students who receive the empowerment and undertake the practice of White Tara will increase their spiritual vitality, intensify their capacity for compassion, and overcome fears including the fear of death.

Life Story of Master Andre Sollier

Over the past few months, Master Andre Sollier has detailed the story of his life, through one to one meetings at his home and Satsuma Dojo in Mitcham, Victoria.

This special project was intitiated by a request in response to which Master Sollier kindly gave his permission for us to write the story of his life, including memories of his time with John D. Hughes and the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.

In his autobiography, Master Sollier talks about his childhood in France during the years of the second world war, his work as an illustrator and painter in Denmark and Sweden, travels to the East and his years in Japan.

He tells of his years in Japan during which he studied Sumi-e, Karate, Archery and Ikebana, and of his move to Australia where he met our late Teacher John D. Hughes, teaching Sumi-e at the Chan Academy Australia for almost two decades.

The final draft of Master Andre Sollier's life story is at the editing stage. Leanne Eames is currently assisting with editing and writing of the draft. When completed the life story will be published with photographs in our online journal the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review at www.bddronline.net.au

IT Audit October 2004

An audit of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd computer equipment was carried out on Wednesday 6 October 2004 by Vladimir, Huy, Evelin Halls and Frank Carter for the purposes of determining the requirements for the planned upgrade.

The minimum specifications we will be upgrading to is a PII 350 - 400 Mhz, 128 MB RAM, 4GB HDD, CD ROM with Windows 98 operating system.

All PC's are to be networked on LAN 2 except the audio digitizing PC in the library.

The results of the audit were:

Sariputta Room

PC1A - hardware upgrade to PII 400 desktop with CD Burner
PC 4 - hardware upgrade to PII 400 desktop with CD Burner, 256 MB
PC 16A - requires a new power supply fan & additional 64 MB RAM,
network card.

Library

wardrobe with 10 GB)
PC 14A - hardware upgrade to PII 400 towercase, speakers, & software

Chan Hall

PC 13A - hardware upgrade to PII 400 towercase, & software to WIN 98.

LAN cables will also be provided for a computer in Anita Hughes private residence and Suite 4.

LAN 2 cabling reinstalled

On 23 & 24 October 2004 the LAN wiring was routed to connect to the server which had recently been relocated to the walk in wardrobe of the Sariputta Room.

The work was carried out by Rex Harris, Vladimir, Paul Tyrrell and Frank Carter. Rex is a professional LAN installation and maintenance customer of Companion Trading Pty Ltd. Vladimir is a volunteer helper from Melbourne PC Users Group.

Existing cables previously used on LAN 1 & LAN 2 were tested to find enough points from which to operate our current network PC's.

The hub which had been located in the old office area with the servers was repositioned under the floor of the old office in a plastic storage container.

A second hub was placed in the Sariputta Room to allow the 2 PC's in the Sariputta Room to be connected to the server in the Sariputta Room rather than having to run the cabling down to the hub under the house.

The requirements for cables are:

PC 1A - Sariputta Room
PC 7A - Library
PC 13A - Chan Hall
PC 14A - Library
PC 15A - Library
PC 16A - Sariputta Room
Anita Hughes PC to be located at the rear of the house
Suite 4 PC point for future use.

PC 5A and PC4 are not to be connected to the LAN.

All points are working accept the one to Suite 4 which is located in Amber's bedroom. The other point in Amber's bedroom is for Anita's PC.

The work done and how it was done has been documented at LAN 2 I:\lancable.

PC Upgrade Report

We thank Vladimir who successfully upgraded PC15A and PC5A in the Library today on 27 October. PC15A is now connected to LAN2.

Both PCs have all old data saved onto the new PCs at C:/MyDocuments/OldPC.

"Open Office" and Kodak camera software loaded

This software is very versatile, for example, it can read many file types, has a very good word processor, you can create spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, HTML pages, labels, business cards, text documents, and more. Please note that Open Office can convert files into PDF.

Like Star Office, Open Office is free.

The Kodak camera software is loaded on PC15A ready for use.

John D. Hughes Collection Digitization Project

The JDH Collection audio cassettes have been sorted ready for digitizing as follows.

There are about 450 tapes of John D. Hughes giving Dharma Teachings at the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. These have been sorted into years starting at 1978 and going to 2003.

Tapes have been placed into date order and where they are in sets of Teachings given over a period such as 5 day Bhavana Courses they have been placed in groups.

The sorted tapes are stored on shelves next to the digitizing computer.

The remaining cassettes in the collection are of Teachings given by other Teachers or Ceremony's held at other Temples. These number about 500 and have not yet been sorted.

It is planned to digitize the cassettes of John Hughes Teachings before we start work on the second group.

Paul Tyrrell has commenced the recording process and has burnt the first CD's during the week commencing 11 October 2004.

For more details about this project, also refer to our Buddhist Hour Radio Broadcast at http://www.bdcublessings.net.au/radio353.html from Sunday 31 October, 2004.
