Coming Events at Other Centres

We have a white folder titled "Coming Events at Other Organisations".

Persons who are interested in these events can find the folder in the Sariputta Room, shelf next to PC1A.

Some coming events at other organisations are also published in the Brooking Street Bugle and uploaded onto our websites.

It is suggested that all Members keep track of what is happening at other organisations so that they know which are the important events to attend.

This will also help us to step up our PR programs. We want continue to provide our Temple for future students so that they can learn the Buddha Dhamma for the next 500 years at least.

White Tara Meditation Retreat with Lama Choedak Rinpoche

The Annual White Tara Meditation Retreat with Lama Choedak Rinpoche will be held in Canberra from 25-30 January 2005.

White Tara represents the feminine energy of the Buddhas. She is said to have originated from the tears of the deity Avalokiteshvara, when he wept about the extent and intensity of the suffering experienced by all beings. Students who receive the empowerment and undertake the practice of White Tara will increase their spiritual vitality, intensify their capacity for compassion, and overcome fears including the fear of death.

For information, call the Tibetan Buddhist Society of Canberra on (02) 6238 2088 or (02) 6258 0452.

Please refer to the white folder labelled "Coming Events at Other Centres" for further details about this and other events.

6. Appeals and Special Projects

Life Story of Master Andre Sollier

Over the past few months, Master Andre Sollier has detailed the story of his life, through one to one meetings at his home and Satsuma Dojo in Mitcham, Victoria.

This special project was intitiated by a request which Master Sollier kindly gave his permission for us to write about his memories of his time with John D. Hughes and the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.

Master Sollier kindly extended the project to include his life story. He talked about his childhood in France during the years of the second world war, his work as an illustrator and painter in Denmark and Sweden, travels to the East and his years in Japan.

He has told of his years in Japan during which time Master Sollier studied Sumi-e, Karate, Archery and Ikebana, and of his move to Australia where he met our late Teacher John D. Hughes, teaching Sumi-e at the Chan Academy Australia for almost two decades.

The final draft of Master Andre Sollier's life story is at the editing stage. When completed the life story will be published with photographs in our online journal the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review at www.bddronline.net.au

8. Information Technology News

New zip drives

We have two new Zip Drives that were donated by Master E. One new Zip drive is now located on top of PC15A, and the other new Zip Drive is stored on the IT shelf in the Sariputta Room.

Thank you Master E.

Our old Zip Drive is currently in Evelin's house and is used to back up our websites.

Website backup

All of our websites were saved onto PC5A today. They are on the D:/ drive in the folder called Website.

The websites are ready to be burned onto Cds.

The way we did it: Evelin saved all websites from the PC in her house via FTP onto Zip disks and then copied the websites from the zip disks onto PC5A in the Library.

LAN1 on 10 zip disks

All LAN1 files were successfully copied onto 10 Zip disks.

10 Zip disks equal approximately 680 floppy disks. The size of LAN1 is about 980 Megabytes, that is nearly 1 Gigabyte.

LAN1 is mainly text based and contains a few digital images.

LAN2 Server Capacity

The downloading of all LAN1 data onto LAN2 has resulted in taking up all LAN2 capacity.

John Watson has advised (8 October telephone call) that, instead off increasing the gigabyte capacity of LAN2 with a bigger hard drive, that we add a third server to LAN2 to hold all LAN1 data.

Currently LAN2 has a two server configuration. John has advised that going to a three server configuration will provide greater flexibility and redundancy.

Increasing capacity on LAN2 to hold all LAN2 & LAN1 data would be a lower flexibility option having a level of risk for data loss and reduced access where system goes down.

John will visit the Centre early next week to review the present LAN2 systems. He will telephone Evelin to arrange suitable day and time.

He has advised that if we can supply the hardware, at say a 3 gigabyte HD, he will build and test the server offsite as was the case with original LAn2 server.

LAN2 Server moved to Sariputta Room

On 10 October 2004 our LAN2 server was successfully moved to the Sariputta Room. Thank you to Anita Hughes, Julian Bamford, Frank Carter, Vladimir and Evelin Halls who have helped. We would also like to thank the Devas and Devatas who have helped us. Sadhu sadhu sadhu.

PC1A in the Sariputta Room is the first machine reconnected to LAN2. The other PCs will soon follow.

LAN1 Server moved John D. Hughes Reading Room

On 10 October, 2004, the LAN1 server was successfully moved to the John D. Hughes Reading Room. Thank you to the Devas and Devatas, and to Anita Hughes, Julian Bamford, Frank Carter, Vladimir, and Evelin Halls.

LAN1 is accessible via PC13A in the John D. Hughes Meditation Hall.

Please note: You can use LAN1, but should you create any new LAN1 files, please save them onto floppy disks. The reason is that LAN1 is now mainly used for research and to preserve the Buddha Dhamma data. We will primarily work from LAN2.

Our IT specialist John Watson has agreed to come as soon as possible to increase LAN2 disk space so that we can fit all LAN1 data onto it.

JDH Collection Audio Tape Digitisation Project

Further preparations for the digitization of our John D. Hughes audio tape collection were undertaken on the 27 & 28 September 2004.
