This will also help us to step up our PR programs. We want
continue to provide our Temple for future students so that they
can learn the Buddha Dhamma for the next 500 years at least.

Date Saturday 17 July 2004

Venue South Yarra Community Centre in Fawkner Park

'A Guru should be stable in his actions, cultivated in his speech,
wise, patient and honest. He should neither conceal his short
comings nor pretend to possess qualities he lacks.
He should be an expert in the meanings of the tantra and in its
ritual procedures of medicine and turning back obstacles. Also
he should have loving compassion and a complete knowledge of the
scriptures.'
In this text from the ancient Buddhist sage, Aryasura, the qualities
and behaviour of both the teacher and student are explained. What
should one look for in a teacher? What is appropriate to expect?
What should we do if we are unable to follow their advice? How
do you show respect? The student teacher relationship is
one that is often fraught with difficulties. This text explores
the expectations from both sides.A good relationship is a genuine
cause for real spiritual progress. Khenpo Ngawang Dhamchoe is
a Tibetan monk and lama who has been teaching at the Melbourne
Sakya Centre since 1997. He is based in Sydney, has excellent
English and a profound knowledge of Buddhist scriptures and Western
students.

Successful Raffle Ticket Sales
With encouragement from Frank Carter, Lainie Smallwood received permission to manage a new Fundraising Project for the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey)Ltd.
The plan was to develop a fundraising method for 'quick cash' with no overhead costs. During a brainstorm session with Julian Bamford, Lainie decided to try selling raffle tickets at a supermarket in the local community.
Permission was given to set up a stall at Maxi Foods on Saturday, 26 June 2004 between 9am and 12pm.
This idea was a great success, and on this first occasion I sold 60 raffle tickets managing the stall for three hours on my own.
The Upper Ferntree Gully and surrounding community was very generous and supportive. Total profit for the BDC(U) from Raffle tickets and Donations was $129.20 and just over $9.00 for the Dhammarajika Orphanage. Overall, a fantastic fundraising effort.
You too can be successful at such an endeavour! All you need is location, permission, card table, flowers/incense, brochures and THE WILL TO SELL, SELL, SELL AND SUCCEED.
If you would like to assist Lainie at the Maxi Foods site or develop your own fundraising stall in similar fashion please contact Lainie on 0409 169 254 to discuss.
May this Temple last for 500 years.

Evelin Halls participated in the Multicultural Documentary Heritage
Workshop Program on 9-10 June 2004 in Canberra. Below is reproduced
a newspaper article that appeared in local newspaper The Mail,
on Tuesday 22 June, 2004.
"Top Advice on Preserving Historic Icon
Upwey's Buddhist Discussion Centre houses the John D. Hughes Collection, the oldest Buddha Dhamma reference library in Victoria.
To ensure the collection is preserved for future generation, Evelin Halls from the centre recently visited Canberra to participate in workshop run by chairman of the National Library of Australia Council, Sir James Gobbo.
The workshop, held at the National Library as part of a Multicultural Documentary Heritage Project, was organised in collaboration with the National Archives of Australia.
Ms Halls said the even brought together 45 representatives of culturally diverse community organisations from all states and territories with 29 different language or ethnic groups represented.
"We worked together and learned new skills to help us manage our organisations' archives," said Ms Halls.
Sir James said materials such as photographs, letters, videos, oral history, newsletters, reports, minutes of meetings collected by ethnic communities were an important part of Australia's heritage.
"These items need to be preserved for future generations because they document migrants' experiences of settling in Australia and their significant contribution to Australian life," said Sir James.
"A truly beneficial part of attending the workshop was that the participants could establish a network with people from similar organisations to their own.
"In addition, they made contact with experts in collection management and preservation from institutions such as the National Library, National Archives and State libraries."
To further help ethnic communities the National Library recently published Preserving Australia's Multicultural Documentary Heritage - a practical and easy guide to starting and maintaining an archival collection.
The kit is available at www.nla.gov.au/multicultural/.
The John D. Hughes collection is listed on the Australian Libraries
Gateway at www.nla.gov.au/libraries."
