7. Current Research and Development Interests

Preserving Australia's Multicultural Documentary Heritage Workshop Program

Evelin will participate in the Multicultural Documentary Heritage Workshop Program on 9-10 June 2004 in Canberra.

Material covered in the workshop will include significance, preservation, setting up and managing an archive, paper/photograph/map/book preservation, digitisation, oral history and folklore and the Community Heritage Grants program, and include visits to the Parliamentary Triangle and the National Library.

The workshop, jointly provided by the National Library and National Archives, will give participants a good understanding of the issues involved in looking after an archival collection, as well as some practical skills in its management and preservation.

We thank Evelin for attending the workshop, and we look forward to hearing all about her newfound knowledge.

We thank all beings that have helped us with the John D. Hughes Collection. Please continue to help.

8. Information Technology News

Faulty telephone

The telephone in the Sariputta Room was found to be faulty on 13 May. A new phone was picked up by Evelin from the Ferntree Gully Post Office the following day (free of charge).

PC4 Modem

Just a hint what you can try if the PC4 modem doesn't connect:

plug in the Centre's telephone, dial 101, check if there is a message left on the phone. If so, delete it and then reconnect modem, and it will most likely work.

The technical explanation is: this happens on occasion when persons leave a message using the previous Anita phone number. This phone line is used for our PC4 modem now, and it won't connect when someone has left a message.

LAN 2 power supply replacement

The power supply on the LAN 2 Server was replaced on 30 May 2004 by Frank Carter.

The original power supply had a faulty fan which was very noisy.

The replacement one is a 230W unit as was the original one.

The cables from the LAN 2 cabinet were preventing the cabinet door closing so they have been re-routed underneath. The door now closes so the computers are now very quiet.

Acrobat Reader

The Acrobat Reader program was installed on PC1A on 16 May 2004 to enable us to read and work with pdf files.

How to turn LAN 2 back on after power has been turned off

Turn all LAN 2 PCs off
Go to LAN 2 server cabinet
Press power button labeled 2 first (email server)
Press power button for the I: drive server
Wait for about 10 minutes until turning PC back on (or wait until the lights on the LAN servers stop flashing)
Turn PC back on

Trouble shooting:

If the I: drive does not come up, do the following:

Right click on Network Neighborhood desktop icon
Click Map Network Drive
Drive: select I
Path: click on box and select \\SERVER1\NETDIR

Always let the IT Deva know what you are doing and make offerings.

Windows 95

Microsoft has officially announced that Windows 95 has now reached its "End of Life" stage. This means that Microsoft no longer supports Windows 95, and all other software developers will follow soon if they have not already done so.

The VET has announced that they will support Windows 95 users until late 2004.

For us this means that our Internet PC must be upgraded before the end of 2004. Also, PC1A cannot run our updated ACCESS database version until we have Windows XP.

I suggest we upgrade PC1A and our PC4, our Internet PC, and plan to raise funds as soon as possible.

VET update

Today the VET was updated on our Internet PC. We now run the latest version 0.63.0.1. However, before the end of this year we must have at least Windows 98 on our Internet PC because otherwise we will be unable to continue to upgrade the VET or any other software we may want to use.

We regularly transfer merit to the Mahasangha and local deities. They help us on all our projects.
