Vinaya Rules Study Class No.10. 7 April 2004

The tenth class in the study of the Vinaya Rules was held at our Temple, Chan Academy Australia, at 33 Brooking Street, Upwey 3158 Victoria, at 8.30pm on 7 April 2004.

The class was held in the John D. Hughes Meditation Hall, and was attended by Julian Bamford and Frank Carter.

The students paid respect to the Buddha Dhamma Sangha bowing in front of the main altar three times, followed by chanting of:

namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammasambuddhassa
Five precepts in Pali.
Triple Gem Refuge.

The students sent metta to the Heavenly Sangha and requested their help and guidance with their study of the Vinaya (Monks rules).

At the end of the class reading the students shared the merits with all beings.

The text studied was "A Lay Guide to the Bhikkhu's Rules" compiled by Bhikkhu Ariyesako, 1995.

The section studied was titled: IV Right Livelihood for a Bhikkhu (pp 37-42)

Teaching Dhamma.

The bhikkhu's life is wholly preparing him to gain insight into dhamma and then to have the wisdom to communicate that to others.

However, teaching dhamma is not easy and if it is badly done it can cause more misunderstanding than understanding. Some rules set done how and to whom a bhikkhu should teach dhamma.

Rule: If a bhikkhu teaches dhamma to an unordained person, repeating it together word by word, it is (an Offence of Confession).

A summary of Sekhiya trainings No.57 to 72 are:

I will not teach dhamma to someone who is not sick but who:

- has an umbrella; a wooden stick (club); weapon in their hand.

- is wearing wooden soled sandals/shoes; is in a vehicle; is on a bed (or couch); is sitting clasping the knees; has a head wrapping (turban); whose head is covered; who is sitting on a seat while I am sitting on the ground; who is sitting on a high seat while I am sitting on a low seat; who is sitting while I am standing; who is walking in front of me while I am walking behind; who is walking on a pathway while I am walking beside the pathway.

These Sekhiyas ensure that one teaches dhamma only to an audience which shows respect (AB).

Robbery by False Pretences.

Rule: A bhikkhu who boasts of (superior human states) which he has not in fact attained, commits (an Offense of Defeat).

This deliberate false avowal of meditative attainment is classed as the most serious Defeater Offense.

Rule summary: to tell an unordained person of one's actual superior human attainments is (an Offense of Confession).

Proper Behaviour Outside the Monastery.

Rule: When in inhabited areas I will...wear the under and upper robe properly; be properly covered; go well restrained as to my movements; keep my eyes looking down; sit with little sound.

Rule: When in inhabited areas I will not...hitch up my robes; go or sit laughing loudly; go or sit fidgeting; swing my arms; shade my head; put my arms akimbo; cover my head with a cloth; walk on tip toe; sit clasping the knees.

There is always an allowance for one who is ill.

Socialising and Wrong Resort.

Rule: entering a village, town, or city during the period afternoon until the following dawn, without having taken leave of an available bhikkhu - unless there is an emergency - is (an Offense of Confession).

Persons or places of wrong resort for a bhikkhu are divided into six sorts: prostitutes, widows, spinsters, bhikkhunis, sex aberrant, and taverns.

A bhikkhu is also prohibited from going to see and hear dancing, singing and music.

Wrong Ways of Behaviour

Playful and wrong conduct for a bhikkhu is for example, playing like a child with toys or games etc.; or making garlands of flowers etc.

Bhikkhus are also prohibited from studying or speaking on low animal-like knowledge, such as various kinds of magic, prediction, knowledge for making persons fall into disaster, knowledge for using spirits, and such things.

Alcohol

The fifth of the five precepts for all Buddhists is about drinking alcohol which destroys mindfulness and is therefore a frequent cause of unskilful actions and speech. For the bhikkhu it is an (Offense of Confession)

Wrong Livelihood.

Wrong livelihood for a bhikkhu is:

1. A bhikkhu searching for a living in a way that is also considered wrong by worldly norms. For example, deceiving others by claiming attainments in order to receive gifts and support from lay persons.

2. Making a living that is wrong according to the vinaya disciplinary rule. For example: through giving medical treatment for a reward; to seek reward from the ceremony for chanting paritta, making holy water and the sacred thread; thinking to gain something by giving a little but hoping for much in return.

Behaviour With Families

Corrupting families.

If a bhikkhu corrupts families - in other words he flatters and fawns on lay people - and takes no heed of warnings from another bhikkhu, the sangha should recite a formal admonishment to induce him to abandon this form of behaviour.

A bhikkhu may concern himself with familes if it concerns religious duties.

May the Buddha Dhamma be taught at our Temple for the next 500 hundred years.

We thank our Teacher and Founder, the late Master John D. Hughes, for establishing this Buddha Dhamma Temple, and the John D. Hughes Collection library and for creating the suitable conditions for us to study the Vinaya.

Abhidhamma Classes

Abhidhamma classes continue every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm.

Chanting takes place in our Hall of Assembly prior to the class at 7.15pm. All Members and Friends are welcome.

All Abhidhamma class papers are uploaded to our online journal, the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review, at www.bddronline.net.au and www.bdcu.org.au, and can be found in Volumes 12 and 13 of the BDDR Online.

Classes are free of charge to students.

The topic for Abhidhamma class No. 94, on 13 April 2004, is 'Twelve Maggangas - Twelve Constituents of the Path'.

Students are requested to bring suitable offerings each week to the Abhidhamma Teachings, including flowers, Basmati rice and two reams of Reflex A4 paper. Recycled paper is not suitable as it jams in our printers.

Our Chan Academy Australia dress code for Abhidhamma Classes is white.

Buddha Dhamma Teaching Program for Children

The Buddhist Council of Victoria has developed a course in Buddhism designed for teaching Buddhism to children at primary school level.

The course is suitable to be offered to schools which are looking to provide a wider religious teaching curriculum. Support and backup is offered to school teachers who wish to teach the subject and it may be possible to undertake a teachers training course with the BCOV.

The contact person is Judith McDonald on 9489 1127.

Gilda Grey has completed the training course and recommends it highly.

Coming Events at Other Centres

We have a white folder titled "Coming Events at Other Organisations".

Persons who are interested in these events can find the folder in the Sariputta Room, shelf next to PC1A.

Also, some coming events at other organisations are published in the Brooking Street Bugle and are uploaded onto our websites.

It is suggested that all Members keep track of what is happening at other organisations so that they know which are the important events to attend.

This will also help us to step up our PR programs. We want continue to provide our Temple for future students so that they can learn the Buddha Dhamma for the next 500 years at least.

7. Current Research and Development Interests

Preserving Australia's Multicultural Documentary Heritage

Evelin will participate in the Multicultural Documentary Heritage Project on 9-10 June 2004 in Canberra.

The workshop, jointly provided by the National Library and National Archives, will give participants a good understanding of the issues involved in looking after an archival collection, as well as some practical skills in its management and preservation.

The workshop will cover a range of topics from archives management and preservation to oral history and digitisation. The sessions will be run in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and participants will get a chance to talk to other people managing collections similar to ours.

This project is where we will get the next bit, the skill to produce and carry out a 20-year plan to preserve the John D. Hughes Collection.

We thank all beings that have helped us with the John D. Hughes Collection. Please continue to help.

First meeting of Education Committee

The first meeting of the Education Committee was held during our recent five day course.

Education Committee Members Professor Padmasiri De Silva and Venerable Upatissa attended the meeting. Pennie White was Convenor, and Leanne Eames, Evelin Halls, Lenore Hamilton and Julian Bamford also attended.
