Vinaya Rules Study Class No. 9, 23 March 2004
The ninth class in the study of the Vinaya Rules was held at our Temple, Chan Academy Australia, at 33 Brooking Street, Upwey 3158 Victoria, at 8.40pm on 24 March 2004.
The text studied was "A Lay Guide to the Bhikkhu's Rules" compiled by Bhikkhu Ariyesako, 1995.
The section studied was titled (3) Money, pages 34 to 37:
(b) A Bhikkhu's Steward (veyyavaccakara)
This rule explains more about the relationship between the bhikkhu
and the steward who is taking care of funds for him.
Footnote 96:
Ajahn Brahm's notes state: The Buddha permitted money to be entrusted by a donor to a steward, who may be a monastery attendant or a lay follower, for the personal benefit of an individual bhikku.
What the Buddha said: There are, bhikkhus, people of faith and confidence (in the Sangha) who entrust money into the hands of monastery stewards saying, "with this provide the bhikkhu so and so with what is allowable. I permit you, bhikkhus, to accept an allowable item obtained thereby. But this, bhikkhus, I do not say: that in any circumstances, may gold, silver or money be accepted."
The money in the keeping of the bhikkhus steward remains the donor's money. In practice, the robe price may be used for other allowable requisites. It is important for the donor to check about the practise of the particular bhikkhu/s to whom he or she wants to make an offering. Bhikkhus who follow the rules strictly will behave differently from those who are more relaxed.
(c) Mendaka Allowance
The lay person can offer money to the steward saying, please give
the bhikkhu whatever is allowable.
(iv) Buying and Selling
Rule: If a bhikkhu engages in buying and selling with money it
an offense of confession with forfeiture.
Cheques, credit cards and travellers checks are not the same as money because they are not commonly negotiable, something that one can take into almost any shop without any further inkwork or paperwork, exchange it for whatever one desires.
However checks, credit cards and traveller's checks would come under Buying and Selling and the offenses listed under that are likely to arise.
(v) Barter or Trade
Rule: Obtaining gold or money through trade is an offense of (Confession
with Forfeiture).
(vi) Untouchable things
The rule prohibits the bhikkhus from picking up lost valuables
that he may find and which he may wish to keep safe for the owner,
except where they are found in the monastery or the place where
the bhikkhu dwells.
(4) Lodgings
The Buddha suggested that the bhikkhu should normally stay at
the root of a sheltering tree. However, later, when the rains
retreat period became established and bhikkhus were more settled
after their wanderings through forest, lodgings or kuti came to
be offered and built. Now during the three months of the rains
retreat a bhikkhu is required to stay in a more sheltered place.
There are rules which were formulated as to the size and luxuriousness of the lodgings for the bhikkhu. Extravagant huts were not allowed. The huts should not be more than approximately 9 metres x 6 metres according to the commentaries.
With regard to furniture, bhikkhus are allowed to have a low bed on which to sleep and a stool on which to sit.
This completes the notes from class 9.
May the Buddha Dhamma be taught at our Temple for the next
500 hundred years.
We thank our Teacher and Founder, the late Master John D. Hughes,
for establishing this Buddha Dhamma Temple, and the John D. Hughes
Collection library and for creating the suitable conditions for
us to study the Vinaya.

edharma website
Our new website www.edharma.org is currently being constructed by Evelin. The site will be officially launched during our coming bhavana course.
The dedication on this website reads:
"May the merits generated from this website accrue to the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. and Chan Academy to continue to fruit the vision and work of the Founder Master John David Hughes."
The most recent addition to the site is entitled "The Way of the Kitchen", written by John D. Hughes.
Fax and phone lines
At present we do not have a functioning fax facility. A new phone line needs to be run to the Sariputta Room for our Centre phone no. 9754 3334, and both phone and fax in the Sariputta Room will be run from this number.
New internet PC
Our Internet machine, PC4, is full. Evelin will set up a new Internet PC and mirror PC4, using a donated Pentium III PC currently stored in the Library.
Rodney Johnson has also donated a 80 GB external hard drive. We will connect this hard drive to our new Internet PC (PC17A). This new disk space will ease our webmasters' work uploading photos to our websites including Photolan.
PC4 will continue to run until it is completely mirrored on our new machine. PC4 will then be kept as a backup Internet PC. It was one of John's (many) plans to do this.
In the meantime, please be aware that although PC4 is still
functional, it is full and cannot store any more new data.
Monthly Occupational Health and Safety Report March 2004, prepared by Frank Carter & Anita Hughes, Joint Occupational Health & Safety Managers, 26 March 2004
1. Injuries reported
There were no injuries reported for February/March 2004
2. Hazards Identified Potential and actual
Risk of fire or overload of electrical due to incorrect use of extension cords and power points.
Risk of fire from electrical equipment being left switched on when there is no one in attendance at the Centre.
Risk of fire - Remove garden waste from humus heap to tip.

The front entrance ramp is becoming loose. The ramp will be repaired on Saturday 27 March.
3. Our Fire Fighting Program
The season of high bush fire danger is still here.
We reduce the fire risk by:
1. Reducing fire fuel
2. Being prepared to stop fire burning our Centre and surrounding
garden.
Our plan is for all Members to:

at the western fence line weeding, pruning trees and shrubs,
removal of undergrowth, cutting back bamboo, removal of dry leaves
