WELL DONE JOHN DAVID HUGHES
Recitation by his wife Anita Hughes on the occasion of his Funeral Celebration Ceremony on 6 December 2003.
Dear Master John David Hughes, Noble friend, Dear Husband.
My heart overflows with love as I realise some of what you have done on this earth in this human life.
I affirm that I will continue the work you started and dedicate my life to this Temple in helping all sentient beings meet the Buddha Dhamma and share the merit of these actions with you, till we meet again, that is my utmost wish.
Thank you for showing me the Teachings of the Lord Buddha.
I now know that there is a way out of suffering and I am learning to practice to come out of suffering. I take refuge in the triple gem, I keep the five precepts, I practice Dana and Bhavana. I know to make merit every day. I know to avert from unwholesome actions and generate wholesome actions only. I know I have much Buddha Dhamma to study and learn and practice. I know this because of your guidance to the teachings of Lord Buddha.
Thank you John David Hughes.
I thank you for your life's work in establishing a place where the Buddha Dhamma can be taught, preserved, practiced and realised, a sattadevamanussanam, a Temple for Humans and Gods.
I know it as a rare opportunity to meet the conditions to learn the Buddha Dhamma. This opportunity exists at this Temple because of your work this life and in your past lives.
Thank you John David Hughes.
We celebrate and will continue your global work in the propagation of Buddha Dhamma.
Thank you John David Hughes.
We revel in and admire the minor and major works accomplished by our Temple.
Thank you John David Hughes.
We celebrate the attainment of past present and future Members and Students of this Temple.
Thank you John David Hughes
We will always come together in harmony, meet in harmony, disperse in harmony as recommended by Lord Buddha to generate the causes for long life of this Temple.
Thank you for your determination and will in recovering from illness and overcoming many pains to continue to do your work till the day you died.
We celebrate our good fortune in having known you and vow to continue helping you with your mandate, that this Temple last for the next 500 years as a Buddha Dhamma Temple for the future generations of sentient beings.
Let goodly co-mates in the righteous life come here in the future, and let those that have already come live happily.
May the Buddha Dhamma be taught and flourish in our Temple and in all Buddha Dhamma Temples in Australia and around the world.
Anita M. Hughes' words were followed by a speech by John D. Hughes' daughters, Ms Jocelyn Hughes & Ms Rani Hughes.
Next came a speech by Mr Robert (Bob) Faulkner, a past student of John's at Ferntree Technical College, and Founder of the Gippsland Buddhist Discussion Group.

I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of my dear friend John Hughes. I met him in Sri Lanka in 1982 and have ever since been in constant contact with him and admired his devotion to Buddhism. Message of Condolence
I and my wife Prof. Priti Kana Barua are deeply shocked at the mournful demise of our one best friend and guide Master Dr. John D. Hughes. We are so close to each other that I have no language to express my feelings at this present moment.
I still remember the moment when in the year 1992 at the World Fellowship of Buddhists Conference at Taiwan R.O.C. when Master Dr. John D. Hughes presented me a Buddha Relics. Such a holy relics is serenely preserved in my residence. Whenever I look at the relics and pray to it I remember Dr. John always. He was so magnanimous and kind enough to present a Buddha relics to me.
I still remember those days when Dr. John visited my Dhamma Village Aburkhil and visited our Aburkhil Janakalyan Samiti Office and Our International Meditation Centre. He visited Dhamma Village Aburkhil twice. Aburkhil people are grateful to him for his kind visit from long distance Australia.
Dr. John D. Hughes is a spokesman of Buddha's teachings throughout the world. He was so dedicated in the propagation and practicing of Buddhism for the benefits of many. His Buddha Dhyana Dana Review is widely circulated Buddhism review which has attracted millions of devotees throughout the world.
His depth of knowledge in Buddhism is worth noting. I have gone through many of Dr. John's articles in which there are always something to learn. A high quality personality in Buddhist world is everywhere loved and felicitated. I myself am an admirer of Dr. John.
Aburkhil Janakalyan Samiti - Bangladesh, a Regional Centre of the World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth is very happy to award him with the title Dhammaduta (Messenger of Dhamma) for his outstanding Contributions towards the propagation of Dhamma throughout the world.
Dr. John served the World Fellowship of Buddhists as Vice President for many many years. I still remember the dynamic performances of his team during the Buddhist conferences in New South Wales, Australia and also at Malaysia in the year 2002.
Their tremendous sincere performances in the office sector is really worth noting. Credit goes to Dr. John for creating such a good office team.
Dr. John is a good friend of Bangladesh Buddhists. I have seen to keep one donation Box in his Buddhist Discussion Centre Office only for support to Bangladesh. This shows how much he loved Bangladesh Buddhists. He was so magnanimous that whenever any appeal goes from Bangladesh he always publishes the appeal in Buddha Dhyana Dana Review and circulated it throughout the world so that generous people come forward to support the Bangladesh Buddhists activities.
Once in Chittagong , at a gathering at Nava Pandit Vihar, Katalganj I translated his speech into Bengali. He was so happy by listening to my translation. And blessed me with all his heart.
I and my wife pray for the after life welfare of Master Dr. John D. Hughes. We transfer our merits to Dr. John by the influence of which he will always go up and up.
Because of very short period I cannot attend the funeral ceremony of late Dr John. D. Hughes on 6th of December. I hope that the funeral ceremony of Dr. John D. Hughes will be a successful one at the presence of many dignitaries from all over the world.
Dr. John will always be remembered in our hearts for his loving kindness, compassion and sympathy. We have lost him physically but mentally he will be always in our hearts.
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be on Dr. John to get himself free from all bondages for directing himself towards nibbana.

Dear Little Sister Pennie and the bereaved family and friends of Master Hughes,
Relation between people is really a miracle. Just one month ago I was designated to read the greeting message of Master John Hughes on the Kathina Chibara Occasion of Bangladesh Buddhist Temple at Bodhgaya, India. While reading I was in the deep feeling that I have seen this remarkable man several times in my life fortunately and that day I was reading his writing in front of thousands of people.
I am deeply shocked that Master Hughes is no more with us. May his good karma lead him to a better life or towards Nirvana. May his path be smooth and blissful. May his teachings remain with us forever.

A regular program of Buddha Dhamma Teaching will commence in the New Year starting from Monday 6 January.
Classes will be held every Monday evening from 7.30pm.
The Buddha Dhamma program will be taught by Abbott and Resident Practitioner Mrs Anita M Hughes.
Children's classes are scheduled to begin in March 2004. Plans at this stage are to run the classes on Sunday mornings.
Students and Members are invited to bring suitable offerings such as flowers, food, water, paper, and Buddha Dhamma texts as offerings.
We thank Mrs. Anita M Hughes for commencing this new program of Buddha Dhamma teachings at our Temple.
May Anita M Hughes be well and happy.
Abhidhamma Classes
Abhidhamma classes continue every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm.
Prior to this at 7.15pm, chanting will take place in our Hall of Assembly. This is to awake the participant's minds and to prepare them to learn Abhidhamma. All Members and Friends are welcome.
All Abhidhamma class papers are uploaded to our online journal, the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review, at www.bddronline.net.au and www.bdcu.org.au. They can be found in Volumes 12 and 13 of the BDDR Online.
These classes are free of charge to students.
Students are requested to bring suitable offerings each week to the Abhidhamma Teachings, including flowers, Basmati rice and two reams of Reflex A4 paper. Recycled paper is not suitable as it jams in our printers.
New students are enjoying these classes and longer-term students are maturing under these teachings.
Our Chan Academy Australia dress code for Abhidhamma Classes is white.
Students (Members and friends) are requested to wear white clothes for all classes.
Where students come to the Centre direct from work they ought to plan time into their schedule to change into suitable clothing to be ready to join the class at 7.30pm.

New Brochures
Fifty new Chan Academy Australia brochures were printed and are stored in the white shelving in the library. The old brochures were for the old culture; the new brochures are for the new culture. The new brochures are dated December 2003. If you with to print more new brochures, our file reference is LAN2 I:\brodec03.rtf. Please do not distribute old brochures.
Adopt a Garden Bed
Members now have the opportunity to select an area of the garden to maintain. We have recently dined on the first fruits of our "Feed a Buddhist" program - plump and delicious broad beans. Well done to the gardeners and cooks.
For further information on adopting a garden bed see Lenore Hamilton.
Chan Academy Sumi-e Program 2004
The theme for next year's Chan Academy Australia Sumi-e program taught by visiting Master Andre Sollier has not yet been decided. The first three classes for the year will be a continuation of the theme for 2003, which was "The Seven Factors of Enlightenment".
For details visit our websites at www.bdcu.org.au or www.buyresolved.com.au or for class bookings, purchase of materials or enquiries, please contact Julian Bamford on 9754 3334.
Classes are held in the Chan Hall among rare calligraphy, Chan and Sumi-e masterpieces. All classes run from 10.00am to 3.00pm.
The cost of each class is $66.00 including GST. The class fee includes all materials.
Students may purchase painting materials from our Centre.
An opportunity exists for the right person to train under Julian
Bamford as an organiser of these classes. Julian Bamford has eight
years' experience in this position.
Tea and Coffee-Making Practice
When Members make tea and coffee at the Centre we consume a lot of merit.
Under the current arrangements this holds true whether Members are making the tea for themselves or to offer to others.
Even when we put 20 cents in the dana jar we are still consuming more merit than we make because the real cost of producing a cup of tea is greater than $1.
In order to protect our merit Members should place at least $1 in the money jar per cup of tea made. This applies even when making tea for Anita or visitors.
We can become more aware of the merit we consume by paying attention to this plan for conserving our merit.

Buddha Dhyana Dana Review
We are looking for persons who would like to print issues of the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review Online for our John D. Hughes Collection library.
We require at least five copies of each issue with colour photographs.
The issues can be printed directly from the BDDR websites www.bdcu.org.au and www.bdcublessings.net.au
Please see Evelin Halls or Pennie White if you would like to assist with this project.
Photocopier
Our photocopier is beyond repair. Rodney Johnson has kindly offered the use of his company photocopier now that he moves into Brooking Street.
Free use of the copier is for Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. purposes rather than private purposes. We need to supply our own copy paper, contribute to the cost of consumables and arrange use at times to suit Rodney.
The Centre still wishes to source a photocopier on a more permanent basis. Anyone wishing to donate a photocopier please see Frank Carter, or call him on 0408 303550.
"Feed a Buddhist" Program
All beings depend on nutrients - fine or course - to stay alive.
All students need nutrients to progress. Most students do not have mental power. To have mental power students must offer food and drink.
Our late Teacher John D. Hughes created a "Feed a Buddhist" Program for Members to make the causes needed in this area.
This is a devamanussanam Temple. It is user pays. User pays is the Law of the Universe for devas and humans. We make suitable offerings and requests of the many beings who come to help us. We make food for the Devas. That is what they pay us for. The devas pay us by gifts and protection.
Camberwell Market Stall
Thank you to the Chief God of Wealth and all other Devas and Devatas and Members who help us with the Camberwell Market Stall.

Sitemeter
As at 21 November 2003 we had received a total of 2221 visitors to our Buddhist Hour Radio page on the www.bdcublessings.net.au website.
Average visitors per day were: 3
Average visit length was 1 minutes 57 seconds
with 21 visitors for the week ending 21 November 2003.
These figures are since visitation statistics have been recorded
by the automatic service Sitemeter.
LAN1 and LAN2
We now use LAN1 mainly as a reference to access our earlier files. We can do ISYS searches on LAN1. However, we will not create new files on LAN1. LAN1 also serves as a backup system in case LAN2 is down. AT present, we will keep LAN1 running and want to make sure that all of our documents remain accessible.
Rodney will burn all LAN1 files onto CDs.
LAN2 is now our main LAN. Please create and save all new files onto LAN2.
Please see Evelin if you have any questions.
Note: When writing documents, for example reports, please do
not use the Tab key as this may give the webmasters a headache
(because HTML does not know tabs and thus the tab gets lost).
It is ok to use tables.
Website backup
Evelin has taken home the Centre's Zip drive and Zip disks to back up all of our websites.
Next the websites will be burnt onto CDs at PC5A.
When all websites are securely backed up, they can be taken off PC4A. This will create much needed disk space on this PC.
However, recent webpages that are currently being worked on such as the BDDR Vol. 13 No. 5 will stay on PC4A for now.
The zip disk backup is to be completed by Sunday 21 December 2003. The burning of the websites onto CDs is to be completed by Sunday 28 December 2003.
Photos with captions
We want to upload all photographs with text onto our websites.
We record everything: names, dates, places, times and a description
of events with the photos, that is: who, what, where, when and
what.
Occupational Health and Safety Bulletins (OH&S Bulletin) provides a communication channel for the flow of information about OH&S matters to all Members of the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. and are a record of our OH&S matters.
Members create and develop OH&S Bulletins in accordance with relevant Acts, Regulations, Codes of Practice and Guidelines.
We publish our OH&S Bulletins within the Brooking Street Bugle print version as well as on our BSB Online website. We will issue an annual special edition of the BSB for Occupational Health and Safety that contains our up-to-date OH&S Handbook. We will run an annual OH&S orientation program that each Member will undertake.
Previous OH&S Bulletins are stored in a red folder in the library filing cabinet FCA2.
OH&S is an urgent matter.
OH&S is everyone's business.
