Vinaya Rules Study Class No. 11, 28 April, 2004
The eleventh class in the study of the Vinaya Rules was held at our Temple, Chan Academy Australia, at 33 Brooking Street, Upwey 3158 Victoria, at 9.00pm on 28 April 2004.
The class was held in the John D. Hughes Meditation Hall, and was attended by Julian Bamford, Frank Carter and David Igracki.
The students paid respect to the Buddha Dhamma Sangha bowing in front of the main altar three times, followed by chanting of:
namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammasambuddhassa
Five Precepts in Pali.
Triple Gem Refuge.
The students sent metta to the Heavenly Sangha and requested their help and guidance with their study of the Vinaya (Monk's rules).
New student David Igracki was welcomed to the class by fellow students, and format and purpose of the Vinaya study class was explained to our new student, who was then invited to join in the reading. At the end of the class reading the students shared the merits with all beings.
The text studied was "A Lay Guide to the Bhikkhu's Rules" compiled by Bhikkhu Ariyesako, 1995.
The sections studied was titled: V Miscellaneous, Pages 42 - 44; Appendix A: Lay Precepts (Sila), Page 45; Appendix B: A Summary of the Major Rule Groups.
V. Miscellaneous
Disputes.
A set of formal procedures are set down to resolve disputes within the Sangha Community of Monks. They are summarised in the last seven Adhikaranasamatha 'rules' of the 227 Rules of the Patismokkha.
Nikaya or Schools of Buddhism.
"For an outsider, one of the most notable features of Buddhism is the number and diversity of Buddhist schools. When disputes are left unresolved there is a tendency for the formation of nikaya or 'schools', which are passed on through 'ordination lineage' to future generations of bhikkhus. Historically, as Buddhism spread over Asia, the practice of local Communities gradually adapted to new circumstances. The originally slight divergences grew so that today not only do we have the major Schools of the 'South' (Theravada) and the 'North' (Mahayana, Tibetan), and 'East' (Mahayana, Ch'an, Son, Zen, etc.) but also myriad minor local differences."
Etiquette.
Showing Respect.
"The Buddha allowed several ways of showing respect to others "for the beauty and good of the Community (of both Monks and Lay people)". These include: vandana - bowing or 'showing reverence with the five points', i.e. the forehead, two four arms, and the knees; uttahana: standing up to welcome; anjali - joining the palms together in respect; and samicikamma, which are other ways of showing respect that are beautiful and good.
Another ancient way of showing respect is circumambulation or walking around the object of veneration three times in a clockwise direction - so that ones right shoulder is towards, for example, the cettiya or pagoda.
Footnote 111. The cettiya (or stupa, chedi, sometimes pagoda) is one of the most ancient objects for the focus of recollection of and devotion towards the Lord Buddha. Buddha rupas (statues of the Buddha) came later through, probably Bactrian Greek influence.
"It is a tradition of bhikkus that whoever enters the area the cetiya, which is a place for the recollection of the Master, should behave in a respectful manner, neither opening his umbrella now putting on sandals, nor wearing the robe covering both shoulders. They should speak loudly there or sit with their legs spread apart with their feet pointing (at the cetiya), thus showing respect for that place." (Visuddhimagga, page 82)
"Younger bhikkhus (in terms of bhikkhu age [or vassa's meaning number of rainy seasons spent as a Monk] use these Ways to show respect to those who have been bhikkhus for longer than them, and similarly, lay people may show respect to bhikkhus in the same way. A younger bhikkhu may call another bhikkhu, "bhante", ("Venerable Sir" or "Reverend Sir"), and, similarly, a lay person may use this a general form of address to bhikkhus. Each country will have its own way of addressing older, more senior bhikkhus appropriate to their age and experience.
We thank our Teacher and Founder, the late Master John D. Hughes,
for establishing this Buddha Dhamma Temple, and the John D. Hughes
Collection library and for creating the suitable conditions for
us to study the Vinaya.
Abhidhamma Classes
Abhidhamma classes continue every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm. Chanting takes place in our Hall of Assembly prior to the class at 7.15pm. All Members and Friends are welcome.
All Abhidhamma class papers are uploaded to our online journal, the Buddha Dhyana Dana Review, at www.bddronline.net.au and www.bdcu.org.au, and can be found in Volumes 12 and 13 of the BDDR Online.
Classes are free of charge to students.
Students are requested to bring suitable offerings each week to the Abhidhamma Teachings, including flowers, Basmati rice and two reams of Reflex A4 paper. Recycled paper is not suitable as it jams in our printers.
Our Chan Academy Australia dress code for Abhidhamma Classes is white.
Buddha Dhamma Teaching Program for Children
The Buddhist Council of Victoria has developed a course in Buddhism designed for teaching Buddhism to children at primary school level.
The course is suitable to be offered to schools which are looking to provide a wider religious teaching curriculum. Support and backup is offered to school teachers who wish to teach the subject and it may be possible to undertake a teachers training course with the BCOV.
The contact person is Judith McDonald on 9489 1127.
Gilda Grey has completed the training course and recommends it highly.
Coming Events at Other Centres
We have a white folder titled "Coming Events at Other Organisations".
Persons who are interested in these events can find the folder in the Sariputta Room, shelf next to PC1A.
Also, some coming events at other organisations are published in the Brooking Street Bugle and are uploaded onto our websites.
It is suggested that all Members keep track of what is happening at other organisations so that they know which are the important events to attend.
This will also help us to step up our PR programs. We want continue to provide our Temple for future students so that they can learn the Buddha Dhamma for the next 500 years at least.

Preserving Australia's Multicultural Documentary Heritage
Evelin will participate in the Multicultural Documentary Heritage Project on 9-10 June 2004 in Canberra.
The workshop, jointly provided by the National Library and National Archives, will give participants a good understanding of the issues involved in looking after an archival collection, as well as some practical skills in its management and preservation.
The workshop will cover a range of topics from archives management and preservation to oral history and digitisation. The sessions will be run in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and participants will get a chance to talk to other people managing collections similar to ours.
This project is where we will get the next bit, the skill to produce and carry out a 20-year plan to preserve the John D. Hughes Collection.
We thank all beings that have helped us with the John D. Hughes Collection. Please continue to help.
LAN1 and LAN2 server cabinet relocation
We will relocate the LAN1 and LAN2 server cabinets into the Sariputta Room. We will clear all clothes and other items out of the wardrobe to create space for the cabinets. Some shelves need to be removed.
We need a big wardrobe where we can store the clothes. The wardrobe could go into the spot where the fridge used to be in the old kitchen.
To move the LANs is a big and delicate job. We request the help of Kamfatt, Tiraj, Julian, Frank and Pennie because we need their technical expertise. However, all other Members are also welcome to help on the LAN moving day.
Evelin will organise that Kamfatt, Tiraj and our IT team will come on the same day, likely to be a Saturday.
All suggestions, feedback and help are welcome.
OH&S: Sink use in the new kitchen
If persons are washing dishes in the new private kitchen, it
is suggested that they mainly use the two small sinks rather than
the big deep sink. The small sinks are much higher and are thus
better for your back. We suggest to use the big sink for very
large items only such as larger pots an pans.
